Hanova Hills' Happy Cows

Hanova, arguably one of our area's best kept secrets, brings its bounty to the Elmwood Farmer's Market every week. Those that aren't able to visit the market on one of Buffalo's sunny Saturday mornings can sometimes find Hanova's products at the Lexington Co-op, just a few blocks down the road.
Hanova's beef, a truly delicious alternative, incomparable to the options available at supermarkets and local butchers, is derived from hormone free cows raised in green pastures and fed a healthy diet of hay and corn.
Happy and well cared for animals make for happy taste buds. Hanova Hills' beef is particularly tender and succulent, and according to them, its “the way beef ought to taste”. After the roast I recently purchased, I have to agree.
Prices range from the remarkably low $4.99 per lb. for Top-Round Roast, to Top Sirloin at $10.60 per lb. on up to the well-worth-it $22.99 a lb. for Filet Mignon. With 16 varieties of beef available, there's certainly something here for every chef and their chosen preparation. Though Hanova does not carry every cut at the Village Market every week, there's always a good selection. Their product moves fast and an early morning stop will award you with a wider selection to choose from.
It's not only about beef. A phone call to the farm on the Thursday before the market gives shoppers the opportunity to order freshly butchered chickens raised with the same standards as Hanova's beef. Poultry can be picked up at the market during its normal operating hours.
I'm interested to see if this post, much like the recent one about the market's White Cow Dairy will lead to an increase in customers for this vendor. I'm thrilled to hear that local grocers are now beating down White Cow's door to carry their products in our area. The appreciation for whole, artisan products leads to a better quality of life for our farmers, our earth, our children and ourselves.

Buffalo Rising just received this great news from the WNY Chapter of the American Liver Foundation, "Given today's economic climate we understand people cannot give as much as they would like. Effective today, tickets to Flavors of Buffalo 2008 are reduced to $100."
Everyone has a favorite restaurant; that special place for celebrations and birthdays. Maybe you love the food, the atmosphere, the whole experience. Ever wonder who’s behind it all or how your favorite chef makes t …
Sunday Suppers is a Buffalo Rising series that encourages readers to enjoy an evening with good friends and family, while preparing and eating a simple one-dish supper. Ingredients should include fresh produce and local food products. As my picky-eater daughter was preparing for her first year at college, I started thinking about her opportunity to start a Sunday Supper tradition in the dorm. A tasty, nutritious meal made together with roommates and friends could establish a routi …
You know how sometimes you have a conversation with someone and come away with the impression that things are good, and everything is as it should be? After I spoke with the Cichocki Brothers at Camellia Foods, a 3rd generation Polish Sausage and Ham producer in Buffalo, I came away knowing that at the center of everything they do is Family Tradition—as it should be.
The Cichocki brothers, Peter, Patrick and Eric, are at the helm of their Grandfather Edmund’s business that h …
Last month, when I asked readers to list five places they couldn’t live without, several folks mentioned Amy’s Place. A few of them specifically recommended the Margie Meal. So it was with great anticipation that I recently made my first visit to this very cool establishment. Why it took me so long to try this place, I’ll never know. Suffice to say that I’m already looking forward to my next meal there.
I liked the vibe right away when I noticed a sign on the wall that sa …

Really flavorful, delicious steak. I've had the ribeye twice now, and it's been fantastic both times.
