Story Options

Halvah, also known as halwa, halva, or halava, is what I would call an “old world” candy. It dates back thousands of years to the Middle East. Semolina forms the base of this sweet treat in countries like India and Pakistan. Tahini, a popular sesame paste, is used in Eastern Europe. Sunflower halvah is the more popular main component in Central Asia.

This particular variety, made by a 99-year-old Brooklyn company called Joyva, is available at Bagel Jay’s on Delaware. It has a sesame base and comes in two flavors, one marble (chocolate and vanilla) and the other vanilla coated in chocolate. Both of these treats are kosher parve, and are therefore perfect for both vegans and those that follow specific dietary guidelines for religious reasons.

If you’ve never had halvah, I can only describe it as soft and crumbly with a flavor vaguely similar to that of the interior of a Butterfinger candy bar. Perhaps some of our YUM! readers can offer a better description? Either way, it’s good stuff, and at only 99¢, it’s also an affordable risk for the finicky.
