Guercio's Is A Savings Grace

Guercio's Is A Savings Grace

Story Options

Did you know that Guercio's on Grant Street is one of the best places to get inexpensive groceries in the city? The reason I mention this is that many people consider the authentic market the best place to go for produce and the experience, but rarely do you hear about the savings. You might think that quality produce would actually cost more. Or that a small market might not have the buying power of a bigger market. First off, if you are looking for produce, you're might be looking at saving $2-$3 a pound on certain items - for example, the savings on the bell peppers are notorious when compared to other markets. Often times we'll hit up Guercio's before heading to any other market in order to find the freshest, least expensive goods. From there we'll wrap up the shopping at Wegman's for the items that we know a small market can't stock. It might add up to two stops, but it's worth it every time. My girlfriend puts it this way:

"You can't get much more local than shopping at Guercio's - it's like going to a street-side farmers' market. After living in many other cities, the Guercio's shopping experience is a welcome change to traditional modern convenience supermarkets... it's just the feeling you get when you know that you're supporting an old world market. The wide mix of languages heard while shopping portray the multicultural energy and soul of the place. It's a slice of life that is very welcome in all cities."

This is very true. Farmer's markets or Guercio's almost always have better deals than any larger grocery store. Banana's are always 10 cents cheaper per pound, vine ripened tomatoes are only 1.49 / lb at the Hertel market... 2.99 at least at Tops or Wegmans. They might not be able to carry everything but often you can't beat the prices and the taste is almost always better.

We got packaged Feta cheese from for the first time in over a year.... and it will be the last. You can't beat the flavor or price for a chunk of it from Guercio's.

when my fiancee and I found Guercio's we were floored at how cheap everything was. we can often fill up two baskets of goods for around $30. much like queenseyes, we then head over to wegmans for things that Guercio's doesn't have room for. we love wegmans as well, but it can get a bit expensive. the best part is that by going to Guercio's first we are able to cut down our time in wegmans significantly...and anyone that goes on a weekend knows that is a good thing.

Indeed, Guercio's is a WS gem! And very affordable too.

As a longtime WS City Hall 'watchdog', until I left Bflo for my safety several years ago, I also enjoyed meeting many WS 'political leaders' shopping there. Virtually all were defined as "Italian", with WS roots, as they had long ago moved away . . but returned to shop at Guercio's.

Many seemed nervous to encounter me there.

    Why?

it's wonderful to see that many of you have found a treasure on grant st. if you venture one more block south, you will find LORIGO'S MEATING PLACE, one of the best butchers, and fresh meat markets in the area! if you want reasonably priced fresh cut meat and poultry, this is another gem that shouldn't be overlooked.
