'Soft' Launch At Rock Harbor Village

On June 14th Ed Hogle of Atlas Steel will be hosting a soft launch celebration for the pending groundbreaking of Rock Harbor Village (see original story). This event coincides with the Rediscover Amherst Street parade and festival (see post). Ed is, at this moment, in the process of building a temporary outdoor concert stage where he plans on hosting a 'test' band from the hours of 4pm to 7pm on the 14th. The indoor/outdoor covered stage is being built and the grounds (currently a large parking lot) are being prepared for the people who will be stopping by on that day. The gigantic iron beams (see photo of Ed sitting on one) are being fashioned into seating arrangements along the perimeter of the lot. There will be beer and food available on that day as well.
Besides beer and food and music, Riverkeeper members and friends will be kayaking the Scajaquada Creek on that same Saturday. And be sure to look for that Rock Harbor Village ship float in the rediscover Amherst Street parade... steel-fashioned cannons and all. There will be a trolley leading from the parade to Rock Harbor Village and then on to the St. John's Strawberry Festival on Amherst Street (near Niagara Street). This is going to be a fun day marking the beginning of an exciting project.
Keep a lookout for a new Rock Harbor Village sign that will be visible from the elevated section of the Scajaquada Expressway, and keep your eyes pealed for a big steel stage being built on the grounds.
Soft launch event to benefit the Buffalo Dragon Boat Ladies.
Also, don't forget to check out the Amherst Street Art Fair and Craft Show that same day.

At an after school program recently, some kids were doing homework, some were on computers and some were in the gym. But a small group of fourth-graders were designing and building boats out of household products- plastic cups, construction paper, and tape. They had been building and modifying their boats throughout the week, trying a few different design and construction plans. Now they were ready to race them across a tub of water, using a fan to power them across. After deal …
Larry Griffis III is a well-known Buffalo figure whose experience with steel is not only his passion, but his birthright. Some may know of his father’s sculpture park in South Buffalo, founded in the 60s, but his son has taken up the torch and is now a world-renowned sculpture. What started with the father has continued with the son. Griffis III’s work is starting to appear in spots in Buffalo and now, to see one of his works, you need look no further than Forest Lawn Chapel.

Though they only began in 2002, the 18-person Vocalis Chamber Choir have already made a name for themselves. Vocalis’ first CD was praised by the Buffalo News, is played regularly on WNED-FM, and they perform regularly through WNY, Toronto, and Pittsburgh. Their 2008-2009 season, which only includes eight or nine performances in WNY, will begin at Karpeles Manuscript Museum with their holiday concert dubbed, “Christmas at the Karpeles.”

Ever since the Falafel Bar opened on Allen Street, it was only a matter of time before the Elmwood location was no longer for this world. I spoke to owner, Oded Rauvenpoor, who told me that the decision to close came when he was at a crossroads. He found himself happy with his Allentown diggs, but began eying another part of the city for the Elmwood restaurant. In the end, Oded decided that he wanted to try his hand in the University District (3476 Main Street). I guess there was …

My girlfriend and I took the bikes through there two weeks ago on the bike path. Yes - this section needs a little love. Seems like it has been neglected for a bit.
Could thid be the start of Black Rocks renaissance? Can Buff State get involved?
Neat location for Bars, Restaurants, College kids with parents money, great old structures, etc.... Direct route to downtown on Niagara (Peace Bridge???), or hop on the 190. Seems much could fall into place. Or should I wake up now????

or maybe, if they're willing to reveal themselves, they could do some commissioned (legal) artwork to keep that area's urban feel.
i'm excited for this project to get underway. it has the potential to be great. cleveland did something similar (http://www.steelyardcommons.com/main.asp) that is still underway.

This is a very unique place in the city. Its unfortunate that it will be totally sanitized. With all of its problems Buffalo is authentic. So many that bitch here about America's "cookie cutter" urbanism would love nothing more than to reproduce Portland, Oregon.

Black Rock is truly historic with great old buildings and homes dating back to 1830 . Convenient to Elmwood, Hertel, the 190/198, and Delaware park. This neighborhood is walkable and is serviced by major bus routes. The Riverwalk and Scajaquada path intersect here at Squaw Island Park. Of course like most old neighborhoods we have all the usual problems but there are still many good people here as well as some newcomers who recognize the potential of this under appreciated area. Good luck with this project.

QueensEyes - could you elaborate a bit more on the "groundbreaking"? You mention the concert and festivities, but nothing about construction.
