Grassroots Gardens Presents The Second Harvest Celebration

Grassroots Gardens Presents The Second Harvest Celebration

Story Options

Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo takes empty properties and working with the public and private sectors, attempts to revitalize neighborhoods by reusing vacant land and turning it into community gardens. The non-profit organization tries to work with city leaders and administrators to create gardening properties that requires the gardeners to take care of and maintain the property, thereby eliminating the eyesore of a vacant lot and turning it into a lush garden that benefits the whole community.

Last year, the organization held their first ever Harvest Celebration and they are proud to bring back this annual event for the second time this year. This fundraiser helps garner the necessary means to keep Grassroots Gardens moving forward and continuing initiatives. The organization boasts more than 35 gardens throughout Buffalo, particularly in the city’s east and west side neighborhoods were vacant property tends to be a never-ending blight.

The fundraiser is being held at the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum at 453 Porter Avenue. Local businesses and restaurants will be on hand to provide beer, wine, and hors d’oeuvres, but the event is called “Harvest Celebration” for a reason. Local gardeners will be providing garden-fresh appetizers from produce frown in community gardens throughout Buffalo.

While attendees eat and drink, they’ll be able to view the museum’s current exhibit called “Great Nineteenth Century American Authors” which features original manuscript drafts, including some by Mark Twain, Emily Dickenson, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Melville’s Moby Dick, and the only original page of Legend of Sleepy Hollow. It is truly an added bonus to the already great event that benefits a worthy cause.

The event runs from 5:30 until 8 PM on October 16th. Tickets are $25 for members and $30 for non-members and can be purchased at the door. If you’d like more information about the event or to learn more about Grassroots Gardens, please visit their website.
