Grant Opportunity For NY Artists

Grant Opportunity For NY Artists

Story Options

Are you an artist in need of a grant? If you are, you might want to take note of the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA). Since it was founded in 1985, they have awarded more than $22 million to over 3,500 New York artists. They will be giving $7,000 cash grants to up to 150 artists this year and you could be one of them.

On August 22 from 4:30 PM till 6 PM, there will be an informational seminar to address questions concerning the NYFA’s online application process. It’s taking place at the Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center at 341 Delaware Avenue and is entirely free. No reservations are required and artists will be filled in about funding opportunities and other areas of career development.

Awards are given by a peer panel review and the categories being reviewed in 2008-2009 are: crafts, digital/electronic arts, film, interdisciplinary work, poetry, printmaking/drawing/book arts, nonfiction literature, and sculpture. If that doesn’t fit what you do as an artist, don’t fret. In 2009-2010, they will offer grants for architecture/environmental structures, choreography, fiction, music composition, painting, photography, playwriting/screenwriting, and video.

Online submissions for the grants will begin in early August here. To be eligible, artists must have been a resident in NYS for at least two years and cannot be enrolled in a degree program of any kind. A small sample of work needs to be reviewed by the peer panel of artists who work in the category being applied for. Applications must be submitted on or before the following dates:

October 6, 2008: Poetry, Printmaking/Drawing/Book Arts
October 8, 2008: Nonfiction Literature, Sculpture
October 10, 2008: Crafts, Digital/Electronic Arts, Film, Interdisciplinary Work

Keep those deadlines in mind. If you’d like to learn more about the information seminars or the application process, call 212-366-6900 or visit the NYFA’s website.
