Grab A Lunch And Relax Downtown

Every once in a while I like to grab a lunch to go downtown. When I do, I try to find different places to sit - places that give off an urban vibe without shutting out greenery. Cathedral Park (top photo) still evokes a historic fabric that many other areas around the city have lost. When sitting at one of the tables, the senses become overwhelmed with shadows, people, buildings, and even the Metro Rail. This is where Globe Market's downtown location is found. It's also where Chop Chop recently opened.
Another quiet lunchtime getaway is found at HSBC headquarters (One HSBC Plaza). There are a number of oversized flower planters that double as benches where you can sit and eat. It's surprisingly serene in this spot. Did you know that a few feet from the row of planters is a Tim Horton's? And a Subway Restaurant next to that? There are entrances to both places located on Main Street - underneath the building. It's a bizarre place to find a place to eat, but at the same time it really is an oasis in the middle of the city. Next time you're down that way, head under the HSBC building (plaza level), before heading back outside to sit and relax.

At an after school program recently, some kids were doing homework, some were on computers and some were in the gym. But a small group of fourth-graders were designing and building boats out of household products- plastic cups, construction paper, and tape. They had been building and modifying their boats throughout the week, trying a few different design and construction plans. Now they were ready to race them across a tub of water, using a fan to power them across. After deal …
Larry Griffis III is a well-known Buffalo figure whose experience with steel is not only his passion, but his birthright. Some may know of his father’s sculpture park in South Buffalo, founded in the 60s, but his son has taken up the torch and is now a world-renowned sculpture. What started with the father has continued with the son. Griffis III’s work is starting to appear in spots in Buffalo and now, to see one of his works, you need look no further than Forest Lawn Chapel.

Though they only began in 2002, the 18-person Vocalis Chamber Choir have already made a name for themselves. Vocalis’ first CD was praised by the Buffalo News, is played regularly on WNED-FM, and they perform regularly through WNY, Toronto, and Pittsburgh. Their 2008-2009 season, which only includes eight or nine performances in WNY, will begin at Karpeles Manuscript Museum with their holiday concert dubbed, “Christmas at the Karpeles.”
This Saturday, December 6th, at 8PM, …
Ever since the Falafel Bar opened on Allen Street, it was only a matter of time before the Elmwood location was no longer for this world. I spoke to owner, Oded Rauvenpoor, who told me that the decision to close came when he was at a crossroads. He found himself happy with his Allentown diggs, but began eying another part of the city for the Elmwood restaurant. In the end, Oded decided that he wanted to try his hand in the University District (3476 Main Street). I guess there was …

The HSBC building has its own cafeteria as well that's open to the public for use. The food is ok, but it's certainly another alternative. There's also a Fera's subshop tucked in across from the Pearl St. Grill on Pearl, which an endless array of old Sabres press photos (many autographed) to sit around and gawk at. Finally, a Just Pizza also recently opened on the 1B level of the HSBC bank for a pizza fix.

Grab a lunch at Fables Cafe (at the Downtown Central Library), then sit outside to enjoy the beautiful gardens; you can even grab a book to read while you eat!

I don't get out to NF blvd too much so I can't comment on the rats there. I walk through Cathedral Park nearly every day. The rats live under the planters there.

Hmm... I work next to Cathedral Park; have for nearly 7 years.
I've seen, maybe 1 rat. Period. I wouldn't call that a problem. I'd call that living in an urban environment. Try spending some time in NY, DC, ATL, etc if you want to see a rat problem. :)
I LOVE Cathedral Park; it's a great place to grab lunch, and close enough to M&T to still hear their lunchtime performances, without the crowd.
Chop Chop and the Globe are fantastic; there's also takeout available from Pearl St, a myriad of options from the Main Place food court, Just Pizza in Ellicott Sq, and a few great restaraunts like City Grille nearby.
I really, really like this section of Buffalo... Glad to see it highlighted!
