Gourmet on a Shoestring: Cafe GarAngelo

A friend of mine lives in North Buffalo, and when I mentioned to her that I wanted to try a great, reasonably priced restaurant on Hertel, the first name that came out of her mouth was Café GarAngelo.
It is a small, bustling Italian restaurant nestled in the block between Lovering and Virgil Avenues, near Chateau Buffalo and the Aladdin Market. When I arrived at the restaurant on a sunny Thursday right after work, the first thing I noticed was the restaurant’s homey feeling. The rear dining room is decorated with twinkling lights and colorful paintings. The owner greets guests as though they were part of the family and offers diners wine and complimentary gorgonzola bread and olives. The bread is warm and flaky on the outside and has a buttery gorgonzola spread on the inside. The olive antipasti is marinated in olive oil and is a great start to the meal.
We started with an appetizer. Sadly, the famous stuffed artichokes were sold out. Simply stuffed with breadcrumbs, herbs and cheese, they are Café GarAngelo’s biggest seller. Instead, we opted for a plate of calamari. The calamari was sautéed in a wine sauce with tomatoes, onion and garlic; it was very moist and delicious. The dish was so plentiful, that with the addition of a side salad, it would easily make a light meal.
I learned from our waitress that nothing at Café GarAngelo is deep-fried and that all of the food is prepared fresh to order. Guests will find many healthy selections on the menu. Before our entrees arrived, I sampled a cup of housemade Italian Wedding Soup with meatballs and bits of grilled chicken.
Most of the entrees are priced at less than $10 and come with your choice of soup or salad. If you want to splurge, there are pricier options that include braciole (when it is on special), steak and veal specialties.
On the evening of my recent visit I opted for the Sicilian fish special. For $9.95, I was served a good sized piece of haddock baked with lemon, olive oil, tomato and cheese. The fish was incredibly fresh tasting and it came with a side of spaghetti with red sauce. I enjoyed the sauce because it was simple and savory. My friend chose a dish of spaghetti and spinach. The pasta was sautéed in olive oil and tossed with fresh, leafy greens.
The food at Café GarAngelo is both simple and absorbing; one can tell when the food has arrived because the roar of conversation that fills the dining room suddenly quiets to a whisper. There are traditional desserts to choose from as well, and I encourage everyone to try one, or at least take one to go!
No matter what someone chooses at Café GarAngelo, they won’t be disappointed. It’s inexpensive, fresh, and tasty Italian food served in a friendly atmosphere.

Before returning to Buffalo, I often wondered what new additions I had missed in our city’s restaurant and bar scene. So highly recommended by many of my closest friends, Jimmy’s on Elmwood, the old Buffalo Barbeque and Brew, was on the top of my to-do bar bite restaurant list.
It has recently been taken over by Jimmy Hambridge, who has been involved with the establishment since it’s opening as the Brew in October of 2006, actually a day before that horrible storm. The Ji …
It should come as no surprise to YUM readers, that I have a passion for spices. You can expect to find me foraging through the city’s ethnic markets, hunting for treasures with which to restock my spice cabinet. The more exotic the spices, the more excited I am to try them. And excited is exactly the way I felt when I first discovered zatar.
Not to be confused with Za’atar (which is a sort of hybrid of thyme-marjoram-oregano), zatar is a traditional Middle Eastern aromatic …
If you’re craving something sweet, you’ve picked the right time to do it. Starting on Monday, June 23rd, Choco-Logo Confectionery Design will be kicking off its annual summer sale. Choco-Logo, whose name is modeled after “Coca Cola,” was, up until recently, the only chocolate factory shop in downtown Buffalo that had captured the attention of people from all over Western New York.
Specializing in corporate gifts, custom logo chocolates and private label products, Choco- …
Italian restaurants are much loved here in Western New York. People from all walks of life and ethnic backgrounds cherish the hearty, homestyle flavors of this Mediterranean cuisine. However, for the large group of immigrant and first-generation Italians here in Buffalo, several of the local Italian restaurants miss the mark.
With a mother from Calabria (southern Italy) and some training in the culinary arts, I fall into this category of disenchanted Italians yearning for tru …

I am so glad for this post. This is one of my favorite restaurants in NB. Great food and friendly atmosphere. That gorgonzola bread is crazy good!! I think they sprinkle crack in it....you just can't get enough.

I love this place also. The food is excellent, reasonable and totally worth the drive from East Aurora. I too love the gorgonzola bread and the Italian Wedding soup. Hey are they open for lunch? I may need to head there now.

Love the place!!, I think its the best Italian food in town, my only beef is ( when they first opened) they gave you unlimited gorgonzola bread and there was 3 times as much cheese on it. Now it, you have to buy it and it’s just a hint of it. However I can't blame them, I know cheese has gone through the roof and I can imagine how many people would keep asking for more and more. It took me a while, but I got down the receipt (minus the crack) and we now enjoy it at home when ever we want. The only other problem is when I go in there, I’m just afraid I might get whacked, check the toilet when you first go in to make sure there’s no gun. Oh, try the stuffed artichokes, vedy good..
