Going to Town On Washington

For a while now I've been heading up Washington Street on my way home from downtown. During those rides, I found myself noting the condition of many of the old brick structures. Since most of the buildings actually front Main Street, the back of the buildings have been left untouched - and not in a good way. For example, the back of the Youth Hostel building looks great from Main, but the backside windows are boarded up, while the first floor is a blank wall. Not to say that the hostel should open its doors along Washington Street - the shape of the building is immaculate... just in need of a sprucing up.
A sprucing up is exactly what the backside of the Town Ballroom just received. A couple of weeks ago this neglected side of the venue was in very rough shape. Even remnants of The Sphere (former venue) could be seen after a number of years of vacating the building. Then, suddenly there appeared a fresh paint-job and new awnings. It's amazing what this thoughtful addition did for the look of Washington Street. Now, instead of looking like a neglected back alley, it looks as if someone really cares about the look of the street. Can you imagine what the street would look like if the back of the youth hostel were to receive a similar treatment?

Ever since the Falafel Bar opened on Allen Street, it was only a matter of time before the Elmwood location was no longer for this world. I spoke to owner, Oded Rauvenpoor, who told me that the decision to close came when he was at a crossroads. He found himself happy with his Allentown diggs, but began eying another part of the city for the Elmwood restaurant. In the end, Oded decided that he wanted to try his hand in the University District (3476 Main Street). I guess there was …
Now that it has passed, the question is how does the “Bicycle Commuter Tax Act” affect me as an employer or employee on a daily basis.
During a time where healthy, environmentally sustainable and community friendly transportation options are more and more looked at as an effective way to encourage energy efficiency, to improve public health, to prevent congestion, to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions and to improve community livability and safety, this is an essential step …
Celebrating the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site’s Victorian Christmas - Away from Home:
As the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site completes their restoration work, they’ll be continuing with their annual Victorian Christmas traditions at offsite locations throughout the region.
So why not try a new way to celebrate the holiday with friends? Friday December 5th, the T.R. Site will be hosting a Wine and Beer sampling at the Central Library. This year, Fables Café will be …
This morning, Barack Obama officially announced Senator Hillary Clinton will be nominated to serve as Secretary of State in the new administration. Assuming Senator Clinton is approved by the Senate for the cabinet position, Governor Paterson will appoint someone to fill her seat.
And so the speculation has begun.
Some of the potential appointees include Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, Congresswoman Nita Lowey, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Caroline Kennedy, Congressman Bri …

There are many buildings downtown that could use a paintjob. Better yet - murals. Go to other cities and they have added murals to make thigns more interesting. In particular, when sitting on the patio at Starbucks at Chippewa, I thought about how much the ugly street could be improved by a mural on the building next to Starbucks. Oh.......and maybe get rid of the oil drums as garbage cans too. lol

That's right STEEL, but until that time (last update Sept. '06), there are measures that can be taken to improve the building - like maybe one of urbansoul's murals.

further proof that no traffic on main street killed 3 downtown arteries, washington, main and pearl. i certainly hope that the new project on main street will truly revitalize downtown (when complete). it will hopefully unite the east side of main with the more prosperous west side of main. its just a barrier right now right through the heart of downtown.

Newel, put your money where your mouth is. I'm sure the owners of said buildings wouldn't object to you paying for a coat of paint.

Huh? So, no traffic on Main killed Washington? How is that logical? If the key to prosperity is automobile traffic, shouldn't the streets that run paralell to Main Street and that are open to cars be more prosperous and not less so?
Also, aren't these the backs of buildings on a block of Main that is open to cars? Isn't the stretch of Washington down by the old AM&A's actually seeing residential development. I guess we can't let facts get in the way of our emotional arguments.

No, directly in front of the Ballroom is where the train comes above ground. Before that is the police station. The front of the hostel is closed to traffic as well.

I noticed this right away. what an awesome improvement! The back looked so filthy and with Sphere still on everything I thought it was just a matter of time before the Town Ballroom was gonna pull out. Now it looks like things are going good and they plan to stay.. Great job.

texpat, if you take a ride down pearl, then up washington, you see plenty of boarded up buildings, ripe for rehabs, i must say, but that does not change the fact, that washington and pearl streets have struggled since the 80s to stay relevant...yes, you are right that there has been residential interest there, but that is in the last few years, what has been there previously for the last 2 decades??? the back of am&a's, caffe lococo, the market arcade theater isn't exactly packed, matter of fact it is sustained by public funds, just to stay open, the hostel has a boarded up backside, and one wouldn't even know it even existed if it wasn't pointed out by someone who knows it is there...there is the block in front of the holling press building (another dead bldg for decades until someone invested in it)...let's look at pearl st, not even chippewa's entertainment district for all its vibrancy, is able sustain life at the former star bar, or the former macaroni company, two prime locations for a viable restaurant or social venue, a block down, there is the boarded up courtyard mall across from the convention center, since the 80s...the main place mall, do i need to explain that one to you??? the vibe across the street from there are people collecting social services payments...the webb bldg, only recenly rehabbed...i am not sure when the last time you actually took a drive around these streets to see for yourself (well, you can't drive on main street, take a walk), but it is pretty bad when you cannot even drive on your principal street, and the streets behind it has blocks (let me repeat that BLOCKS) that have been abandoned for almost 20 years because there is no life on main street. i agree with you that there has been a rebirth in the last couple of years, which i believe will go into overdrive once traffic is restored and people can actually see how much has been abandoned in the heart of downtown and want to do something about it. i really hope restoring traffic is the key...there is a ton of potential downtown...
