Give Supplies To Children In Need

Give Supplies To Children In Need

Story Options

With many families feeling the pinch of the economy more acutely than others, it will be difficult for a lot of them to provide their children with the basic necessities needed for school. This year will be even more arduous for families than past years that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Buffalo have held this event. However, this year, their seventh annual “2 Pack a Back Pack,” will help garner school supplies and book bags for many area children.

The drive takes place on August 27th at six different Walmart Locations. With a lofty goal of providing 4,000 youth with school supplies their year, stopping into your local Walmart and donating something to help the children will be a great boon to the organization. From now until August 27th, you can also donate scientific or graphing calculators at First Niagara Banks.

Some ideas of what supplies are needed are: backpack or messenger bags, binders of various sizes, calculators, colored pencils, crayon sharpener, crayons, dictionaries, dividers, erasers, folders, glue – both bottles and sticks, hand sanitizer, highlighters, index cards, markers, notebooks - both spiral and composition, paper, pencil boxes, pencil sharpeners, pencils, pens, rulers, kid-friendly scissors, thesauruses, and tissues.

WGRZ Channel 2 and 93.7 WBLK will do live broadcasts from the Super Walmart at 5033 Transit Road, which will be accepting donations from 6 AM until 9 PM. All other Walmart locations will be accepting donations from 9 AM until 9 PM and their locations are: 100 Thruway Plaza, Cheektowaga; 4255 McKinley Parkway, Hamburg; 2055 Niagara Falls Blvd., Amherst; 5783 S. Transit Rd, Lockport; and 5555 Porter Rd. Niagara Falls – this location is staffed by volunteers from Boys & Girls Clubs of Niagara Falls.

The drive doesn’t just end after the donations are turned in, volunteers will be needed to help sort the supplies. As you can tell from the girl in the picture sitting by a mountain of book bags, this can take some work. If you’d like to help, you can contact Danielle N. Judge-Johnson at 825-1016 ext 220. See the bright smile on that young schoolgirl's face? Want to see her face light up even brighter? Hand her a brand new SKETCH pad! (I don't mean a ream of lined school paper;) hand her an obstructions-free sketch pad to draw on--and tell her its all her's--then enjoy her smile! --Just a though--her smile is infectious.

i think that little girl is a little boy. in any event, if i was in need of clothes, school supplies, food, or a good home where mom didn't teach me how to roll spliffs i think i might look at you funny if all you handed me was a Sketch pad. here ya go kid, draw yourself some dinner and a pair of socks. I kid, but seriously these kids need a lot more than art. i mean ALL school children need art and music in a huge way, but these kids need something more basic and far more important.

I think the child is a girl with her hair pulled back and the pony tail spilling onto her back.

    Dagner. I think you're right.

Dakovich: I don't dispute the need for all the supplies. I just wish Wal Mart would include sketch pads because, an adult can read to a child; or not, talk with a child; or not, park a kid in front of a boobtube; or NOT, but the very first thing to do to prepare a child for learning is to capture that child's ATTENTION by grabbing hold of that kid's IMAGINATION.

Heck, its cruel and unusual punishment to hand an intelligent child all those glorious markers, color pencils and crayons (ohhh, all those creative implements) and then hand that child encroaching paper with lines on it! Trying to express imagination on lined paper is like trying to see the world through bars or a closed door's screening. (ALL YOU ARTISTS OUT THERE, HELP ME WITH THIS, PLEASE!!!)

Addendum: (Trust me, this works.) Set some paper and a pencil within sight of a bored, unhappy child then occupy yourself elsewhere...

who said i wasn't an artist? just think we're missing the point of this article. i get the whole "give them a pencil and some blank paper"...but what we're talking about here is providing for a childs education IN the classroom. and whats your thing against lined paper. it was the best place to secretly be "creative" during all my schooling years. if it wasn't for my lined paper i would never have learned how to draw. try pulling out a pad of nice sketchpaper during history class and see how quickly it gets taken away by the teacher. Art doesn't require blank paper. but it is much nicer :)

I read this topic sometime in the morning last Tuesday. There was one comment. Someone asking if there are any dropoff places within this City. I intended to say that I think this is a Wal Mart promotion and there aren't any Wal Marts in this City. But while looking at the picture, I wondered what the child's shirt logo says... And why a real Christmas tree wasn't used... And that it looks like there is a black metal spaceship hovering over (her) head... And my next thought was that I bet this kid would love a sketch pad too!!!
