Ghost Hunters at the Central Terminal

Once again a Buffalo institution will be featured prominantly in the national television spotlight. Buffalo's Central Terminal will be featured on Sci-Fi Channel's hit series Ghost Hunters. The show, airing at 9PM tonight, recently featured Iron Island Museum in Buffalo's Lovejoy neighborhood.
If this episode is half as entertaining as the Iron Island segment we'll be in for a real treat!
"The participants in this episode were all sworn to secrecy, so even I don't know what they found. All I know is that they were there longer than expected," according to Michael Miller, CTRC President. "All I can say is that I've never experienced anything supernatural in my 5 years and thousands of hours at the terminal."

At an after school program recently, some kids were doing homework, some were on computers and some were in the gym. But a small group of fourth-graders were designing and building boats out of household products- plastic cups, construction paper, and tape. They had been building and modifying their boats throughout the week, trying a few different design and construction plans. Now they were ready to race them across a tub of water, using a fan to power them across. After deal …
Larry Griffis III is a well-known Buffalo figure whose experience with steel is not only his passion, but his birthright. Some may know of his father’s sculpture park in South Buffalo, founded in the 60s, but his son has taken up the torch and is now a world-renowned sculpture. What started with the father has continued with the son. Griffis III’s work is starting to appear in spots in Buffalo and now, to see one of his works, you need look no further than Forest Lawn Chapel.

Though they only began in 2002, the 18-person Vocalis Chamber Choir have already made a name for themselves. Vocalis’ first CD was praised by the Buffalo News, is played regularly on WNED-FM, and they perform regularly through WNY, Toronto, and Pittsburgh. Their 2008-2009 season, which only includes eight or nine performances in WNY, will begin at Karpeles Manuscript Museum with their holiday concert dubbed, “Christmas at the Karpeles.”

Ever since the Falafel Bar opened on Allen Street, it was only a matter of time before the Elmwood location was no longer for this world. I spoke to owner, Oded Rauvenpoor, who told me that the decision to close came when he was at a crossroads. He found himself happy with his Allentown diggs, but began eying another part of the city for the Elmwood restaurant. In the end, Oded decided that he wanted to try his hand in the University District (3476 Main Street). I guess there was …

We're summoning all the ghosts in the terminal to appear this Saturday at the terminal for Oktoberfest from 6pm to 11pm. Oh yeah, and we'll have food, beer and music by GAM Blaskapelle also.
I never miss an opportunity for a shameless plug. :)

Watched it and they found some interesting stuff (and I am a skeptic). Buffawakening: I was thinking the same thing while watching them tonight...perfect building for something like this.

I didn't know what they uncovered, but I can tell you one thing, the voice that yelled out "Go Home" was Tony Fadale. He used to yell that at the kids trying to break in and cause havoc back in the 80's. I know that voice and I was chilled when I heard it.

buffaloawakening-you are the idiot. Rebirth? What they are only losing a few thousand people this year? Only a few companies leaving? Talk to me about rebirth when a major employer comes here or the place isn't shrinking by the thousands. Putting up bike racks and fixing some houses up in the "village" doesn't make a rebirth.

Rebirth is not an explosion its a series of small steps.the water front project will bring in many jobs, including bass pro which thousands of people flock to every year. if the casino goes through, that will also bring in 100s of jobs. its a small step yes, but a step none the less. building the new federal courthouse and new era expanding their headquarters are also good news for the area. blue cross blue sheild has also invested in the area when they built there new offices. if the politicians would lower taxes and create a more buisness friendly enviroment, then buffalo really could see a rebirth. we have one of the lowest costs of living in the country, one of the most sucessful high schools and great universites, students of which would love to stay here if they had the chance. my calling you an "idiot" may have been out of line so my apologies, but i cant stand people that only bash buffalo, dont see the great things it has or the great things it can do. people who just bash and do nothing to change it.

buffawakening, did you ever think of why Buffalo has such a low cost of living. Supply/demand, no one wants to live there. Through in the taxes, and Buffalo isn't that great of a deal anyways. Low cost of living, but low income earning potential. Doesn't exactly paint the picture of rebirth to me.

buffalo isnt a great deal? my friend you are ignorant. a 300,000 dollar house here would be worth millions anywhere else. even with taxes your money here goes further than anywhere else. and "no one wants to live here?" talk to some x buffalonians... you will here different. its just that as of now there isnt enough jobs. when the jobs come, so will the people. and i gurantee you that 99% of them will love it here. because whats not to love?

Sop, let me get this straight, a $300,000 house in Buffalo would be worth millions "anywhere" else. You make this statement, but you call me ignorant. So, take away parts of Southern california, Bay area, Westchester, NY, Greenich, CT, and some other ultra expensive areas, and then show me the facts of how this blanket statement is true.
I'll give you a break, I read your bio and you are a college kid. Stop drinking the Buffalo Kool-aid son. I know that you have owned houses all over the country and dabble in real estate, right? Not an economics major, right. Price usually goes up with demand. In educated areas, with nice climates, good economies or in large metro areas, people want to live there. Real estate prices go up. In depressed areas, with no jobs, people move away, they don't come. prices go down.
One more questions..when are all thse jobs coming??? Thye have been saying that since the 1970s. Also, if all thse x-Buffalonians want to live in Buffalo, why are they x-Buffalonians? Wake up son.

they are x buffalonians because there isnt many jobs here as you pointed out. in fact much of my family has moved away. but what i am saying is that we are turning a corner. we are creating more jobs. and for your information, my relatives who live in long beach california would love to come back here. the people here stand out from all other places.
some random costs of living... weighed by housing 30% food 15% transportation 10% utilites 7% health care 6% the rest under the "other" section Buffalo's score is 78 overall... but housing is 24 pittsburg 84 .... housing 43 St Louis 80 Colombia SC 84 Portland OR 109 portland ME 103... housing 120 Little rock 80... housing 53
(http://www.bestplaces.net/city/default.aspx?cat=COSTLIV&city=Buffalo_NY&ccity=Pittsburgh_PA&p=3611000&op=4261000)
i think it is fair to say those are "typical" cities. your major cities would be even higher.
and please dont "cut me a break" because i am a college kid. I know economics and know supply and demand. im not stupid. yes i know we have a low cost of living because we are not overflowing with money like san fran and NYC. but reasons dont matter... the fact is is that we still have a low cost of living. and i wouldnt love buffalo as much as i do if it were a NYC or san fran. what do they have that buffalo dosnt for a much cheeper cost? we have a great art and music scene. good education. and for other urban things you can drive up to toronto.
and this so you know... we actually didnt lose any jobs this past year. we gained a very small amount... but for buffalo this is huge. (http://www.labor.state.ny.us/workforceindustrydata/index.asp?reg=wny)
and im not trying to say buffalo is going to have a population explosion, and skyscrapers will rise from the gravel.... most of us wouldnt want this even if we could have it. just that in the next decade or so, the population decline stops. some people start moving in. that buffalo is brought back to life.
Georged, you are an intelligent man. (i mean this with no sarcasm) and this so you know i enjoy discussing this with you greatly. your points are valid as are mine. Its always important to see the other side, and in seeing your side it has brought me down a little :( haha and educated me more. and yes it does not look fantastic for buffalo. as you said, it hasnt for decades.
but it may be turning around. but you cant turn around a city without people and buisnesses beliving in it. I believe in buffalo. thats why i am attending college to help it. In reading buffalorising all the time... i may drink the buffalo kool-aid a tad much :) as you say, but i do believe that we can and will bring back this town.

we also had a 2.7% increase in our GDP since 2005 and the times union paper of albany NY today published that for the first time in a very long time buffalo surpased Albany's economy, second only to Rochester in Upstate.

Were taxes factored into the cost of living for the examples you gave me? Again, I don't argue that housing in Buffalo is well below the national figures. I think you grossly underestimate taxes is figuring out what someone pays yearly on a home.
As far as surpassing Albany's economy, and being a runner-up to Rochester, NY...those aren't really any kind of feats to start bumping your chest about. All Albany has is goverment, and Rochestor has been reeling in the past few decades as well. To use a sports analogy that is like saying that JP Losman had much better QB ratings than Rob Johnson. That doesn't mean he was good. How about some comparisons with other cities Buffalo's size nationally? A 2.7% GDP increase since 2005? Until recently, with the economic downturn, the economy in most of the nation was cruising along. a 2.7%GDP increase isn't exactly a figure that would strongly support your rebirth notion.
Good luck with school, and i respect your passion and wish you the best.
