Preparing For Rediscover Amherst Street...

Story Options

Members of the Grant-Amherst Business Association were out on Amherst Street bright and early this morning getting the street ready for their upcoming June festival. Actually, June 14th marks a day when a series of events will take place in this district. Of course there is the Rediscover Amherst Street event that includes a pie baking contest and a fun parade. Then there is the Strawberry Festival held that same day at Saint John’s Church (closer to Niagara Street)… way to go Reverend Fred! Finally there will be a groundbreaking at the Rock Harbor Village site, complete with an artistic iron pour to wrap up the day’s events. The iron pour will pay tribute to The Seabreeze… the first metal steamboat ever operated on the Great Lakes. The Seabreeze was launched at the terminus of the creek in 1907.

Free trolley rides will be offered to people all day long, so that all of the events can be connected. Riverkeeper will also be on hand to offer kayak tours on Scajaquada Creek. All in all, Amherst Street is certainly becoming an inspirational district of Buffalo. There are sections of the street (in Black Rock) that have remained virtually unchanged for a hundred years. With the continued help of organizations such as the Grant-Amherst Business Association and Grant Amherst Block Watchers, the Rediscover event will continue to bring new visitors into the area to learn about the history of the neighborhood.

Special thanks to Wegmans for giving a discount on the flowers and providing coffee and donuts to members of the street cleaning party. The fifteen-member group arrived at 5am and departed at 11am. And look for the new street banners to arrive any day now.

Where is the physical even place? Rock The Lot is located in the empty lot next to Sessions Studio. 330 Amherst, near Grant.

The 11th Rediscover Amherst Street Festival, which this year includes "Rock the Lot", offers a more family friendly & civilized alternative to the art festival. The Best Pie in Black Rock contest has it's entries due at 9am with judging by a celebrity panel at 10am. The parade is at noon and the Spar's Wiener Eating Contest is usually around 2pm. This is a wonderful way to experience the historic downtown Black Rock neighborhood. On a side note, it was recently discovered that the area was once know as 'Lower Rock" & originally part of the Town of Clarence. Come out & have a good time ! Don't forget the Strawberry Festival at St. John's. There will be a free trolly between the events.

The Allentown Festival is not "civilized"? The usual criticism is that it is TOO civilized. ie: no spontaneous fun. I sort of wish the Amherst Street event was the next weekend. It sounds like it deserves its own time slot, not in competition with such a popular event. I love the spirit of neighborhood festivals and this looks to be a good one. I'll be sorry to miss it. This is a neighborhood ripe for renewal.

Nothing says "civilized" like a wiener eating contest.
