Gallo to Hang in B'lo

Gallo to Hang in B'lo

Story Options

Vincent Gallo, he of Buffalo 66 and The Brown Bunny, will be at Soundlab on September 25th with his band, RRIICCEE.

We very much enjoyed Gallo's interview with Chad Radford, that can be viewed at his blogspot here: http://chadrad.blogspot.com/2007/12/thats-not-art-with-rriiccee-vincent.html.[parental advisory]

As for his music, here is an excerpt from Radford's take on Gallo: This is not experimental music made for the sake of experimentation. As Gallo explains, improvisation is not the right word for the group's brand of spontaneous composition and performance. "Improvisation means committing to a musical form or vocabulary," he says. "We're creating composition, which means we need to be conscious and reflective. We are spontaneous and we are inventing, but we're not wallowing in scales. We're trying to organize structures that we recognize in the moment, that make compositional sense and build upon those. 'Conscious' is the best word for what we're doing."

Yeah, well whatever. Gallo has always been a hearty self-promoter and his diatribes usually defy explanation, but we like him. He's one of us with more sunshine, access to the beautiful people and--we're guessing from the interview--absolute unapologetic candor, as evidenced in this statement: "And first of all, I can't read or understand music in that way, so I can't repeat things anywhere. Even the When album, which is the most conventional musical form that I ever committed to, I have to have other people show me how to play the songs. It's like learning someone else's songs. None of it makes sense to me."

Surprised this website is promoting a guy like Gallo who has openly (and accurately) bashed Buffalo again and again!!

He's also praised Buffalo, many many times.

Especially when Buffalo 66' was coming out.

He also showed that film HERE in BUFFALO before anywhere else.

I can't speak for his music, but his film Buffalo '66 was an insulting caricature. The last comments I heard him make about Buffalo were deeply misinformed and baseless.

He praises Buffalo when he needs to sell tickets. He has totally bashed Buffalo for the most part. Are you really surprised that the film opened in Buffalo. I think the only other place that it "opened" around the country were at various Blockbusters.

The first time I saw "Buffalo 66" I was more interested in the locations of where the movie was shot. The second time I saw "Buffalo 66" I thought it was very funny. "Buffalo 66" was actually quite well received around the country. BTW: I have one of his album's - pretty darn good - very moody (go figure).

I thought it was good too. It recieved a lot of critical praise, but you have to admit, not much commercial success. I thought it should Buffalo as dark and depressing...which it is. Angelica Houston's Buffalo accent was dead on.

My point was that this website, which is really sensative to any criticism of the city, was the last website where i thought i would see any promotion for this guy.

BRO is not sensitive to Buffalo criticism, it does however take issue with unfounded Buffalo criticism.

Buffalo 66 was very funny but not a real boost for Buffalo's image.

BRO is not sensitive to criticism?

You're on crack. They wouldn't accept restaurant reviews unless they were rah-rah-rah. Then YUM ran out of things to talk about (or money, or both) and we're surprised?

I think it is absolutely telling that the comments about Vincent Gallo immediately are about how he criticized Buffalo. Absolutely pyschologically telling about the majority of those attracted to this blog.

BRO is a elixir that binds the hopeful and the damned.

    Long live BRO.

"but his film Buffalo '66 was an insulting caricature."

Buffalo 66 is very close to being dead on (in 1998 and still in 2008). BRO and the authors of comments that push the bullshit cutesy image of Buffalo are way off.

Vincent Gallo IS a pretentious douche-bag and a whore --- so what, he's good and making films. "Buffalo 66 was very funny but not a real boost for Buffalo's image." -- as if it's everyone's job to boost Buffalo's image.

The true believers in Buffalo refuse to celebrate the appeal of the city's strangeness. For me and maybe for others, the "strange" is why Buffalo is more interesting that many other cities.

The problem is that he is a douche(masengill brand) but he is so dead on on his portrayal, and his candor of buffalo that he is very credible. It is so depressing here in Jan Feb March April

The film has the watermark of a suburban mentality. It shows so little of Buffalo, and what it does show is so filtered through his own bitterness, I don't see how people see it as "spot on." It's not even about Buffalo; it's about Vincent Gallo, and that's not a very interesting subject.

Assaroni: "It is so depressing here in Jan Feb March April"

I live for January thru March. (Actually December thru March)

Buy a snowmobile or buy/rent a snowboard/skis now and then.

Drive an Audi or Subaru and do 4 wheel drifts in KMart parking lot.

My point? Make the most out of the fact that you have snow for a couple months! Don't let something that made you so happy when you were a kid make you depressed simply because you grew up. When life gives you snow, make snowballs!!!!
