Fresh From Grant Street

Have you ever found yourself utterly starving while shopping? I must not be the only one based on the selection of pre-made, ready-to-go foods available at the Co-op and all major supermarkets.
At Guercio's there is no "dining room", panini or lattes. What they do offer is killer deli sandwiches at a shockingly low price. Sandwiches can only be ordered during typical lunch hours on weekdays, but that doesn't deter many based on the number of folks waiting patiently in line.
Roast beef, turkey, ham, capicolla, proscuitto, tuna salad, salami, bologna- those are just a few of the choices offered. Lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard, mayo, oil, your favorite cheese- all of the standard sandwich accompaniments are available. Better yet, they don't have trays of pre-sliced meat and cheese hanging out, no matter what kind of sandwich you order; they're going to slice everything while you wait.
Above is my lunch (and dinner) from yesterday. Approximately 6" in diameter and 4-5" tall, I imagine it would be difficult for most to polish one of these off in a single sitting. Here mayo, lettuce, tomato and Swiss are piled atop a mountain of premium Boar's Head turkey. Served on a crusty roll, can you imagine a better deal at a cost of only $2.75? My cohort managed a lovely roast beef version for only $3.25.
They've offered this service for years; I can't imagine that they'll stop anytime soon. So, even if you work downtown and usually brown bag it or eat in the company cafeteria, consider stopping by the next time there's a holiday or you're on an elective three-day weekend.

Buffalo Rising just received this great news from the WNY Chapter of the American Liver Foundation, "Given today's economic climate we understand people cannot give as much as they would like. Effective today, tickets to Flavors of Buffalo 2008 are reduced to $100."
Everyone has a favorite restaurant; that special place for celebrations and birthdays. Maybe you love the food, the atmosphere, the whole experience. Ever wonder who’s behind it all or how your favorite chef makes t …
Sunday Suppers is a Buffalo Rising series that encourages readers to enjoy an evening with good friends and family, while preparing and eating a simple one-dish supper. Ingredients should include fresh produce and local food products. As my picky-eater daughter was preparing for her first year at college, I started thinking about her opportunity to start a Sunday Supper tradition in the dorm. A tasty, nutritious meal made together with roommates and friends could establish a routi …
You know how sometimes you have a conversation with someone and come away with the impression that things are good, and everything is as it should be? After I spoke with the Cichocki Brothers at Camellia Foods, a 3rd generation Polish Sausage and Ham producer in Buffalo, I came away knowing that at the center of everything they do is Family Tradition—as it should be.
The Cichocki brothers, Peter, Patrick and Eric, are at the helm of their Grandfather Edmund’s business that h …
Last month, when I asked readers to list five places they couldn’t live without, several folks mentioned Amy’s Place. A few of them specifically recommended the Margie Meal. So it was with great anticipation that I recently made my first visit to this very cool establishment. Why it took me so long to try this place, I’ll never know. Suffice to say that I’m already looking forward to my next meal there.
I liked the vibe right away when I noticed a sign on the wall that sa …

Christa, Guercio's is like no other market. Part old world part gourmet in the same location on Grant street on the west side. The beautiful Guercio family still own and operate this jewel of the west side. Great people, great market! That is why they deliver to so many top restaurants in the city.
So Christa, not only do we agree we love Guercio's, we also love Bistro Europa and Slavic Bazarr. Now that is good eats. Yum!

Not what I want to see when I'm starving!! Worked on a job near the market and always wanted to stop in but never got the chance. I think I'll make the trip out there now to see what I missed.

Mike-
As a person with a penchant for good food, I imagine that you've stopped by Spar's Sausage while in the Grant St. area.
We just did a feature on them in the February issue of BRM.
If you haven't been there, you must, must, must go.
Happy Eating-

Christa, Yes I shop at Spar"s and I agree it is a must go to. Only the finest, fresh meats and also other goodies.
I thank you for the work you do in making all of the wonderful food sources in Buffalo available. Living here all my life I have learned so much about food and cooking and also about our great restaurants. We have many cultures here in Buffalo to choose from, and I enjoy them all.
If you are ever in Hamburg, N. Y. do yourself a" flavor" and go to Dainle's Restaurant on Buffalo Street for dinner. It is fine dinning ta it's very best. Just incredible.
Happy Eating, Mike

Mike-
I cannot count the number of times that that establishment has been recommended to me. If I ever get out to Hamburg, I fully intend to check it out. I'm glad that you like YUM! Wait until you see all of the new features that we are developing for this channel. I think that foodies like yourself will enjoy and appreciate them. Thanks for being such an active BR reader. I love to hear from YUM! regulars.
Bests- Christa

The Guercio family are hard working and attentive to the food quality and products they carry, that is why many restaurants shop there. I have known them for years and went to school with Tommy and Santina. I shop there at least once a week, and tell others to check it out. Way to go Guercio's, and thanks for staying on Grant Street, Santina, Ciao Bella!
