Football Anyone?

Football Anyone?

Story Options

I have got to say, I am so pleased not to be on the board of directors of Urban Roots Community Garden Center anymore. I am certainly not up to meeting their most recent challenge.

Seems the meatheads at Buffalo ReUse have challenged the members of the garden center to a game of football. In fact, they are so confident about their prowess that they have invited the supporters of PUSH Buffalo and Habitat for Humanity as well.

Let me tell you honestly, I have not watched a football game since I was in high school and I just plain did not know what else to do with myself. I have also never tried to play the game, not to mention that I am not sure I own an appropriate pair of shoes anyway. I might show up to witness the madness though, as it sounds much more appealing to watch my friends pummel each other than to sit in a cozy armchair watching the strangers in the NFL on a TV screen knock heads.

The challenge came from via email this morning from Caesandra Seawell, Buffalo ReUse Logistics Coordinator. She states right up front, “It will be grueling and cold and very macho . . . which is why I'll be on the sidelines heckling, cheering and eating chili!”

The pitch is for an east meets west rivalry. Seems they are really getting into their new East Side digs. I think they should consider inviting their neighbors at ArtSpace to join in, and the West Side can invite members of Big Orbit Gallery. This could really get interesting.

Also on hand this Sunday during this yet to be determined contest will be hot chili. Sunday, December 16, noon at 298 Northampton Street.

Me and my friends play basketball one night a week. Should I submit an article about it to Buffalo Rising? This weekend I went to a concert and had a few drinks with my friends. Sunday I watched the Bills game and rented Superbad. It was hilarious. Lets all waste eachothers time and post our weekend plans on BRO.

Maybe so, SLEEPL8, but you're the only person who has posted to it twice. Seems to interest you more than most!

I'm only guessing here, but I believe the point of this article is to get people to play football. If you wanted to join Buffalo ReUSE or Urban Roots.

SLEEPL8, I understand that you think this is relevant only to a small group of people but when I read this article I found it interesting that some Buffalo non-profits are getting together to have some fun. These are a bunch of hardworking people who are really invested in our city and (1) they deserve to blow off some steam under the auspices of a friendly football rivalry and (2) this kind of non-work related activity helps to build community and strengthen relationships between these organizations, which can lead to less reinvention of the wheel and more cooperation when it comes to stuff that really matters. I don't feel that that needs to be spelled out in the post itself, but maybe we disagree on that point. In any case, I agree with you about Superbad. Now, if McLovin was playing football in the snow in Buffalo, that'd be totally newsworthy. ;)

SLEEPy, Apologies if this post seemed at all EXCLUSIVE. Buffalo ReUse challenged a couple of organizations, but the intent, let me assure you, is to get as many bodies out there having fun as possible. Buffalo ReUse is all about INCLUSION. And yeah, I know, I didn't need to talk about my shoes or my high school football experience, but I seriously have nothing to say about the sport itself.

artbuff- You are correct in that my point is that this article includes so few people that I didn't see its relevance on this site. I don't mean to be a party pooper because I do love football. If this article was an invitation to play I would have been stoked and calling my friends so that we could show up and take ourselves too seriously and be too competitive because we are trying to relive some of the glory days of high school football...Sadly my friends and I have become the flag football guy on the bud light commercial...

domingez- I get the whole co-worker bonding thing but I guess I look for more substance every day when I read these articles. Mclovin is the man. I pissed my pants watching that movie...twice...

If you have read the Buffalo ReUse blog, it clearly states that any and everybody are invited to come play, come cheer or just come share chili. Yes, the challege was issued to other community groups to get the game started, but from what I understand, it's open to anybody willing to play.

First of all, I love the article, and I find it has a point, because I want to be part of this game.

Count me in to play with the Urban Roots/West Side team.

I will have the right shoes and a big heart, but I may be a little bit late since I lead a congregation that will be getting our of worship around noon.

If the team captain has any inquiries, I can be reached at drew@elmwoodjesus.org

I had to do it in Middle School, with gym shorts on and a P.E. teacher who was a highly decorated veteran of Thieressenstadt and Dachau. I was scarred for life. Football in the snow? Fun. Forced football in the snow? Not so fun.
