First Annual October Storm Party

With no work and no school on Monday and Buffalo’s beautification in full swing post-October Storm 2006, there is much to celebrate this Sunday, October 12th. Two years after this devastating Western New York snowstorm, the First Annual October Storm Party is set to take place. Benefiting Carvings for a Cause, this fundraiser will take place at J.P. Bullfeathers from 7-10pm.
With a lineup of carvings characters and celebrity bartenders, the night will also feature numerous food stations and the Carvings for a Causettes, the wonderful girls that help to beautify Western New York one tree at a time. Artist Rick Pratt, responsible for the more than 20 tree carvings around the city will perform a live carving demonstration and display his craft.
One of the features of this event is a silent auction with 40 wooden bowls, made from trees from Delaware Park, Caz Park, Soldiers Circle, the Town of Amherst and other areas of Western New York.
“They make incredible presents for the upcoming Holiday Season, are one of a kind pieces of functional art and a lifetime keepsake to remember the storm of October 2006,” said Therese Forton-Barnes, founder of Carvings for a Cause. “You can also sponsor the planting of a tree, and will receive a bowl made from a silver maple tree from Delaware Park,” she continued.
Carvings for a Cause was founded after the 2006 October storm in an effort to turn the beautiful fallen trees, some as old as 200 years, into works of art which are displayed throughout the city. Prominent Buffalo figures such as Frederick Law Olmsted, Frank Lloyd Wright, Tim Russert, Ben Franklin, DeWitt Clinton, Chauncey Olcott, Jim Kelly, and Red Jacket are only a few of many carvings throughout the city. A Black Bear is currently sponsored and on display at J.P. Bullfeathers.
Tickets are $25 and available only at J.P. Bullfeathers, 1010 Elmwood Avenue. All proceeds benefit Carvings for a Cause, Inc. For more information, visit www.carvingsforacause.com or call Bullfeathers at 886-1010.

At an after school program recently, some kids were doing homework, some were on computers and some were in the gym. But a small group of fourth-graders were designing and building boats out of household products- plastic cups, construction paper, and tape. They had been building and modifying their boats throughout the week, trying a few different design and construction plans. Now they were ready to race them across a tub of water, using a fan to power them across. After deal …
Larry Griffis III is a well-known Buffalo figure whose experience with steel is not only his passion, but his birthright. Some may know of his father’s sculpture park in South Buffalo, founded in the 60s, but his son has taken up the torch and is now a world-renowned sculpture. What started with the father has continued with the son. Griffis III’s work is starting to appear in spots in Buffalo and now, to see one of his works, you need look no further than Forest Lawn Chapel.

Though they only began in 2002, the 18-person Vocalis Chamber Choir have already made a name for themselves. Vocalis’ first CD was praised by the Buffalo News, is played regularly on WNED-FM, and they perform regularly through WNY, Toronto, and Pittsburgh. Their 2008-2009 season, which only includes eight or nine performances in WNY, will begin at Karpeles Manuscript Museum with their holiday concert dubbed, “Christmas at the Karpeles.”

Ever since the Falafel Bar opened on Allen Street, it was only a matter of time before the Elmwood location was no longer for this world. I spoke to owner, Oded Rauvenpoor, who told me that the decision to close came when he was at a crossroads. He found himself happy with his Allentown diggs, but began eying another part of the city for the Elmwood restaurant. In the end, Oded decided that he wanted to try his hand in the University District (3476 Main Street). I guess there was …

This morning, a local TV channel featured just a few of the beautiful bowls carved out from fallen trees. There is nothing relating to these bowls (or any other such small, individual piece) at the carvingsforacause Web site.

Crisa- I think the bowls are only for the silent auction during this fundraiser.
Does anyone know what the connection is between Carvings for a Cause and Bullfeathers? I've noticed the carvings there, and now the fundraiser is there, so I'm guessing there's some connection. Just curious, after the recent (if I were web-savvy I'd have a link here) tree-related debacle detailed on BRO a few weeks back- the owner cutting down a tree in Allentown so he could paint one of his properties more easily??

Little Sis: You're right about those bowls. Thank you.
Carolyn Batt-(or mmiller): Does the CfAC collection include that magnificently sculpted tree at Memorial Drive and the Central Terminal? We watched that artist at work.
