Wrapping It Up At The Rock Harbor Village

I think that the hardest thing about spending the day in Black Rock today was knowing that the entire city was lit up with festivals. I saw part of Juneteenth in the morning, a bit of the Allentown festival mid-morning and was on a float in the Rediscover Amherst Street Festival in the afternoon. There was just too much going on at any given event - mostly because all of the events were umbrellas for various micro events. For example, the Amherst Street event marked the launch of The Sportsmen's Tavern 'Rock the Lot' celebration. It also marked the 1st Amherst Street Art and Craft Fair... both micro events were huge successes.
When the festivities on Amherst Street wrapped up we headed over to Rock Harbor Village (RHV) to check out the happenings there. A bunch of us had spent a good part of the week turning this hidden spot into a little musical oasis. As the rest of the city rocked the crowds, drifters who had heard about this alternative venue wandered in to see what was going on. In a nutshell, this was just a sampling of what people can expect from Rock Harbor for years to come. John and Mary and the Valkyries jammed on a professionally handcrafted (yet interim) stage complete with an industrial backdrop and the smell of barbecue in the air.
A beer cage (yes, I said beer cage) was situated nearby and a colorful army parachute (hanging from a crane) provided people with a whimsical overhead splash to congregate around.
This is just the first of many Rock Harbor events that are in the works for this summer. Bandmate Mary Ramsey exclaimed that it was one of the more unique and inspiring places to play in the city. And everyone who arrived had his or her own idea as to what Rock Harbor Village will one day become. Be sure to look for more RHV events to roll out in the near future... it's going to keep getting better and better.

Ever since the Falafel Bar opened on Allen Street, it was only a matter of time before the Elmwood location was no longer for this world. I spoke to owner, Oded Rauvenpoor, who told me that the decision to close came when he was at a crossroads. He found himself happy with his Allentown diggs, but began eying another part of the city for the Elmwood restaurant. In the end, Oded decided that he wanted to try his hand in the University District (3476 Main Street). I guess there was …
