Fandemonium?

As a former Buffalo Bills season ticket holder, certain truths about the stands were evident. The 50-yard line, for example, was relatively tame. The end zone could be purgatory.
Before getting season tickets, I sat in both spots--all around the stadium actually, and the location of one's seats could make the experience as different as night and day. Spilled beer, profanity and a thrown punch or two, and the end zone could be distracting as all hell. Once I almost went to blows with a group of beer (loud mouth soup) drinking youth when they turned their sights on a meek couple (he of the whale embroidered pants) in front of them.
The 50-yard line was a world away, where you could watch the game instead of your back.
A recent article in the Wall Street Journal (Don't they have better things to worry about/report on these days?) paints Buffalo fans as unruly overall. In an article of which the larger framework was about Eagles fans, Bills fans are lumped in among the badly misbehaved. But are Bills fans any worse than any other team's fans? And doesn't the venue and event call for just a little loud-mouthery? This is exciting stuff!
Excerpt from the WSJ: One self-admitted laggard is the Buffalo Bills, a team that has struggled to control some of the worst-behaving fans in all of sports. The Bills are aware of the Eagles text-messaging system and would like to have it, but they simply haven't budgeted for it. Buffalo has relied, instead, on old-fashioned shame: publishing the names of those arrested at Bills games in the local paper. But that often isn't enough to keep fans from getting plastered.
According to Chris Clark, the Bills' security chief, one Canadian fan who was arrested this year came back to Buffalo to appear in court. He stopped by the stadium to apologize and ask Mr. Clark for a tour. "He told me he got on a bus in Canada at 7 a.m., started drinking, and doesn't even remember being in the stadium." Though Mr. Clark admired the fan's candor, he declined to give him the tour.
Funny, that Clark cited a Canadian fan, when talk of moving the Bills franchise to Canada is in the air. Maybe those exhibition games are meant to be a litmus test for fandemonium.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

i have season tickets in the rockpile section- i love the seats and the price is right, but i'm sure the vast majority in my section are some combination of drunk and insane. i'm fine with the section given my age and tolerance for craziness, but if i was 15 years older and had kids or something, no way i'd sit there. to be fair, sitting in their when the bills beat the raiders 3 weeks ago was a blast - people were piling on their neighbors like they won the super bowl. great stuff.
that being said, i've sat other places in the stadium, and it's been completely fine.

This is my 20th year as a season ticket holder and 20th year of tailgating. I'm looking forward to another 20 years!
I've seen a lot, but nothing you wouldn't see at any other NFL stadium with 70,000 + football fans.
GO BILLS!

I love the anonymity of these articles. If you are going to post an article, please attach your name to it. I sure people who post and reply to article on here are somewhat creditable, but some of these user names are ridiculous; it is sometimes hard to have a serious conversation with these individuals. Interestingly enough, there are many who use their first name, such as I, or something that resembles their name. Thank you to them.
This is a website that a lot of people read, more than most of us think; most of these people do not post on this site. Let us keep Buffalo in a good light, at least a somewhat intelligent light.

rb66, if you expect 20 more years of tailgating at Bills games, you better be prepared to commute to tronoto to do so. This franchise is gone when Wilson dies.

hahaha wow georged you are freakin original.....that stupid line is old...so give it a freakin rest...if the economy is garbage i cant see any big buisiness man dropping 1 billion for the team and 1 billion to build a new stadium somewhere (and dont say rogers center is big enough because its long been established its not big enough for NFL standards)

Kooks, you really are an ignorant person. When Wilson dies, they are selling the team. Someone is going to have to buy it, right? So now you are comparing millionaires in places like Toronto and LA vs. those who are in WNY and feel that a dying areas like Buffalo would be the most profitasble place to put a team (olsdstadium, low ticket prices.) You do the math, would you rather own a team in Buffalo or a city that has a bigger and richer population? Again, someone has to buy the team when Ralph dies, it is in his will.

the bills would never last in toronto. for one, if they have any losing seasons like the past 8 years here, you could bet there attendence would be extreamly low. and the biggest factor for why a football team would never last... its illegal to tailgate in ontario.
the bills in toronto would be like the NBA raptors and the MLB blue jays. good in theory, but bad in economics. they will always be a hockey town.

I receive an email everyday from the Rogers people asking if I'm interested in purchasing tickets for the December 7th game against Miami. It's still not sold out. Are you kidding me?!?
If this game was in Buffalo it would have sold out the day tickets went on sale to the general public.
The Bills will not leave Buffalo.

Actually georged if you knew anythign that you're writing about you would know that its in his will for the team to be sold because his heirs dont want to pay the inheritance tax. However there is a changover in the laws where in 2010 if he were to die there is no inheritance tax against his estate. So if he dies that year your logic is incorrect. Also, I was not comparing the rich in WNY to the rich in toronto. But for a team to move anywhere they need a new stadium. So, if you know about how things in the NFL work, youd know that the team will go for close to a billion, the league's owners and commish (who is from WNY) have to vote for the move of the team by 2/3 majority. Also, there is a close to 1 billion dollar relocation fee that a move entails, which is suppoused to be split amongst the owners (hence you are asking them for fork over almost 32 million apiece) and lastly you are looking at a new stadium that has to be built whereever there are built which is anywhere from 500million to a billion. So, while im sure it gets you off to say how much buffalo sucks compared to big cities and how you are a 150% positive they are gone, maybe you should do some research before you call anybody ignorant. Not saying its impossible, but its annoying how people who clearly know nothing about the NFL are so sure they know everything about the bills and their future

I have boycotted all, ALL professional sports (Bisons, Cyclones and Staten Island Yankees aside). I will not pay for it any more. I do love my Bills but just can not take paying the freight or fright and sitting among hoods who drink, pee and vomit where they will. Yankee Stadium, Foxboro Ma, Mile High, Fed Ex Park, Fenway, Shae: $70 for entrance Sodapop: $8 Hot Dog: $9 Parking: $28 Watching a game at home, Priceless

to pegger and auburner... you say you wouldnt attend bills games. i agree with you on that... im 18 and not willing to go into certain sections of the stadium. but you also say that you watch the game at home, as do thousands of western new yorkers.
if the bills leave town... they will no longer be the buffalo bills. weather you watch the game at home or at the stadium, i think we can all agree that it is important for this community to keep the bills in buffalo.

@icecreamsub....before you start commenting on whether Bills fans are Rhodes scholars....perhaps you should consult an online dictionary.....waste in the context you are referring to is spelled waste, not waist....that's elementary school spelling. I would probably guess that a good portion of Bills fans attending the games have some college under their belts. @Auburner - Regarding the "hoods who drink, pee & vomit" where they sit...I've been to many Bills games myself....perhaps I've been lucky, but I've rarely encountered someone like that. Yes...there have been drunken people....heck....I encounter some of those people on a day to work in Allentown....but I've always found the security people at the Ralph take good care to nip some of those problems in the bud.
