Facebook Is Free And Easy

Yes, there may be a few different social networking sites out there, but it's Facebook (FB) that appears to be pulling ahead of the rest. Facebook is kind of a mix between LinkedIn and MySpace. It's a great networking site for Buffalo-based organizations (non-profits), community activists and everyday people. For example, Righteous Babe Records can promote its talent pool, while at the same time you can become friends with Ani DiFranco. The best part is... it's free and easy.
Because it's free, organizations like the buffOLA dog park can add a page where people with Facebook accounts can join. There are alerts, message boards, news feeds... so many different ways to relate with an audience. Like Craig's List, FaceBook offers a very unique and effective way to get your group's voice heard. So many times an organization is held back due to marketing cost restraints. Unlike MySpace with its loud music and psychedelic backgrounds, FB is fairly streamlined and easy to navigate. It's also a lot more interesting than the simple (yet still effective) LinkedIn.
Is there an organization in Buffalo that needs a Facebook page? Are you a friend of Big Orbit? Are you on the board of the microparks? Do you have a block club that needs support? There are plenty of organizations that could use the boost. Join the existing ones that you want to support, or start a group and look for members.

At an after school program recently, some kids were doing homework, some were on computers and some were in the gym. But a small group of fourth-graders were designing and building boats out of household products- plastic cups, construction paper, and tape. They had been building and modifying their boats throughout the week, trying a few different design and construction plans. Now they were ready to race them across a tub of water, using a fan to power them across. After deal …
Larry Griffis III is a well-known Buffalo figure whose experience with steel is not only his passion, but his birthright. Some may know of his father’s sculpture park in South Buffalo, founded in the 60s, but his son has taken up the torch and is now a world-renowned sculpture. What started with the father has continued with the son. Griffis III’s work is starting to appear in spots in Buffalo and now, to see one of his works, you need look no further than Forest Lawn Chapel.

Though they only began in 2002, the 18-person Vocalis Chamber Choir have already made a name for themselves. Vocalis’ first CD was praised by the Buffalo News, is played regularly on WNED-FM, and they perform regularly through WNY, Toronto, and Pittsburgh. Their 2008-2009 season, which only includes eight or nine performances in WNY, will begin at Karpeles Manuscript Museum with their holiday concert dubbed, “Christmas at the Karpeles.”

Ever since the Falafel Bar opened on Allen Street, it was only a matter of time before the Elmwood location was no longer for this world. I spoke to owner, Oded Rauvenpoor, who told me that the decision to close came when he was at a crossroads. He found himself happy with his Allentown diggs, but began eying another part of the city for the Elmwood restaurant. In the end, Oded decided that he wanted to try his hand in the University District (3476 Main Street). I guess there was …

BRO should have a regular feature that highlights internet applications that were new 4 years ago. The previous hey Buffalo, take a look at Craigslist post was the first installment.
Sorry for the snark. I guess I'm just amazed about how slowly technologies get integrated into Buffalo life, or how long it takes them to enter the local zeitgeist. Is this a function of the brain drain, of generational diaspora, or of resistance to technology in general?

I'm not sure that this post is evidence that people in Buffalo are unfamiliar with Facebook, unless everything that people in Buffalo are familiar with gets posted here.

Colin,
Point taken, I was feeling very misanthropic when I wrote the above.

I don't know, but you might be able to find out through this new search engine I found called "Google". It's so much simpler and cleaner than Hotbot and Alta Vista, so the pages load faster when I'm connected through Frontiernet.

Its really interesting to see an article about Facebook on BRO. I say this because in the college scene, facebook is as well known as TV...and used a million times more. I never knew Buffalo organizations were on it so its good to know! Identity theft shouldn't be a problem. they have tons of privacy options that not only helps prevent that aspect of security, but also helps to hide the all too common college keg stand pictures from being viewed from future employers (who are allegedly checking students' facebook profiles as a supplement to applications...which is a crazy thought)

Does Dash's carry this google thing, or do I have to go the Boulevard for it? I just found out my local library branch closed, and with it, the awesome microfiche collection disappeared.
