Touring Our Future Guides

Story Options

Seeing UB students touring around the city's West Side has been a real eye-opener (see story)... not just for the students, but also for the residents. A few days ago I happened upon about twenty-five students waiting outside of Prime 490 for Harvey Garrett. While they were waiting for Harvey to begin the tour, JJ (Prime 490 staff), walked out to see what was going on. We told him that the students were from UB and that they were about to proceed with a tour of the West Side. JJ's first question was, "Oh, so you're from the School of Architecture?" The students in turn replied, "No, we're from the School of Pharmacy." That response pleased JJ to no end, because immediately he understood that the tour was not designed to study the neighborhood as much as it was to become a part of it.

Another bonus about having JJ stop out to learn about the tour was that he gave the students a quick lesson while they waited. He told them all about the infamous history of the restaurant, and even added some details that neither Harvey or I had ever heard before. The storytelling was an unexpected bonus and made the start of the tour even that more intriguing. Now, when these students come back to the Essex Corners neighborhood, they can regale their friends with the same stories that JJ passed along to them. In five minutes, their view of that part of town had already changed... and the tour had not even started.

HEY! Tell those kids to get out of the flower bed...I mean tell them to get off the weeds. How come the owner of this spot isn't being tarred and weathered for not keeping his property up. If this was in front of Wilson Farms or Subway, there would be a 10,000 word blog on it.

The tree was probably happy to see them move along too.

tarred and feathered, not weathered! LOL.

PS As long as you have to register, why can't you edit your own comments. Then again the web volunteers(I mean staff) are working on the never ending performance issues.

mbhxam, you may be right and this might not be a spectacular post, but I like to follow the progress of previous posts. Sometimes I'll post on something and then never show that the people are actually following through on their missions. To me there is a difference between writing about what intentions are and showing people putting a plan to action.

QE...Speaking of plans in action, could you do a followup on the Buffalo River Park? Last time you wrote about it, the organizers had 1 mil+ in the bank and were supposed to be doing phase one this year. Other than a sign on the fence, what happened to phase 1?

    Thanks!
