Elmwood Market Signs Up For A City Bike Rack

Story Options

While biking home yesterday I was flagged down by Adam Ali of the Elmwood Village Market. I had spoken to Adam a few days earlier about the City of Buffalo bike rack program, and here he was waiving the application in his hand. He told me that he was on his way to drop off the request at the corner mailbox - he was pretty excited that The City had obtained funding for free bike racks for commercial buildings (click here to go to the City of Buffalo website).

I can't stress how important it is for our business community to take advantage of the bike rack program. Cyclists have already found out the hard way just how tough it is to lock a bike up without having the parking meter heads in place. Hopefully an announcement will be made very soon regarding the locking rings scheduled to be bolted onto the remaining parking meter poles. There are almost no places to lock a bike up in Allentown (and other commercial districts) until The City fabricates and installs the bike racks. Remember, there are rings and racks - the rack program has been announced and the ring program is still in the works.

Last week we drove up to Toronto to catch a show (same distance as a NYC commute), and found bike rings virtually everywhere we looked. And because it was so easy to find bike parking, there were bikes locked to almost every single parking pole. All of these cyclists were eating at the restaurants and shopping on Queen Street - the businesses there know just how much commerce bike racks can bring to their doorsteps. In residential neighborhoods like Allentown and Hertel, it is easier to hop on a bike and head to the corner than it is to drive a car and look for parking.

If you own a local business and would rather send in a request in the form of a letter, click here to download an application.

I think that most business should sign up for one. Seeing that the fuel prices seem to be staying high and not going to come down too far in the foreseeable future. It's amazing how much the bicycle and scooter rider population has increased just this summer alone. Having the bike racks available will only help increase the amount of people shopping at these businesses because now they have a place to put their bikes and not have to worry about them being stolen or damaged. Hats off to the city for implementing this program.

Good on the Elmwood Market. That's been a great new addition to the area, and the bike rack (or rings) will just increase my frequency of visits. I'm only a few blocks away from it, so i'd like to not have to fire up the car when i want a sandwich, or a quick shop.

i just called the city to check up on our requests that i put in for my company a few weeks ago - they said it may take another month!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am upset, by then it will be cool and not as many people will be out on their bikes!!!

What do we do??!!!! I think we should all call city hall and demand them!

I don't think they have the racks just sitting around. They have to be manufactured and installed according to the demand. It takes some time. It stinks to not have them in all summer, but relax, this is bike infrastructure being installed for the long haul.

Yeah, that's the answer. Never met a problem that our nice caretaking, parental-substitute government couldn't step in and solve. What a bunch of girly-men metrosexual weiners up there in Buffalo.

Just kidding, mostly. But something about the article just seems pathetic.
