Elmwood is 'Teaming' with Volunteers

I ran into Dave from The TreeHouse Toy Store this past Saturday, and I asked him how the turnout was for helping to decorate the avenue this year. "I've never seen anything like it," he said. "Everyone that said they were showing up did. And they brought their friends and family along."
Hmmm. I remember the days when you couldn't drag anyone out to help with this sort of thing. I had heard from Lacy (from Diggin' It!) earlier that day that they had actually organized teams to help with the festivities. She explained, "Lisa Caywood from the Ruby Slipper and myself organized everyone for today's decorating. We divide all of the tasks into "teams" and signed people up for each team. Dave from TreeHouse and Ward from Urban Clothing helped direct everyone for the "Team Lights" and light hanging."
It was true. These guys were organized. Volunteers brought ladders, and strands of lights (70 boxes at last count), and ribbon, and anything else they could get their hands on. I ran into Seaghan from Campus Wheelworks (inset photo) who brought his mom along with him. The folks from Presence were present, Joanne from The Co-op (top photo) helped out along with Tom from Watson's Candy.
It helped that it was a balmy 60 degrees out that day (I checked the Now Channel of BRO to be sure), and there was relatively no wind. Up until now there really have been no signs of the winter season approaching. Fall has been spectacular. With the addition of all the new stores on the avenue along with a top notch decorating crew, this season should be outstanding.

About 13 years ago, a stirring began among artists in Buffalo.
Stirrings borne of discontent with the local arts festivals became a vision, an idea of what could be.
Seeds of that idea were planted and began to take root in the minds of local artists as well as creative thinkers in the community, who had participated in and experienced other art festivals around the country. Seeing positive things happening in other areas, a vision soon formed to create a true, regional, gras …
On Labor Day, September 1st, the second annual “Run Into Buffalo” 5K road race will be held in the City of Buffalo. Organized by Fleet Feet Buffalo, the inaugural event drew over 600 runners last year and resulted in the donation of $35,000 worth of training shoes to the young athletes in the City of Buffalo Public School's Cross Country program.
The race starts at Niagara Square in downtown Buffalo at 9 AM on Labor Day. In addition to the race itself, there’ll be a pre- …
As long as I can remember, the western corner of Elmwood and Anderson has been poorly maintained. That's too bad, because while the rest of the small businesses on the street fight to maintain a distinctive neighborhood image, the Verizon and National Grid buildings remain unkempt. The funny thing is that the potential for that corner is there. If you look closely at the Verizon building details, you will see that the materials and craftsmanship are quite impressive. Can you imagi …
Construction cranes could soon be dotting the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus under expansion plans presented to the Buffalo Planning Board this morning. Kaleida Health has teamed with Ciminelli Development on the ambitious plan which involves three new buildings and $200 million in new investment. If the University of Buffalo agrees to move portions of their medical school to one of the new campus buildings, total investment could exceed $300 million.
