Elmwood Ave Festival of the Arts: The Final Phone Calls

I visited Joe DiPasquale and Tanya Zabinski today at the Elmwood Avenue Festival of the Arts (EAFA) headquarters, and home of their tshirt printing studios, Planet Love. Joe is the Director of the EAFA, and when I walked in, he was seated on the floor, surrounded by files, calling vendors from whom he still needed various fees and forms. He took a break to tell me about the other items he would be overseeing between now and Saturday morning at 10 am when the Festival starts.
With the assistance of the 20 (unpaid) staff, he will tick of the list the following: move 2 huge truckloads of stuff; the tent company will set up 10 big tents; set up 3 stages; set up the sound for the stages; tables and chairs for KidsFest; set up 4 outposts with water, fruit, tshirts, banners, maps, first aid kits and fire extinguishers; run electrical for the stages and food vendors; hook up the solar van for the solar stage; hook up water for food vendors; place barricades and detour signs; pick up a truck load of hay and straw to use as a sound barrier outside the dance tent; install Mark Freeland's dancing figures in the dance tent; meet city workers to get the streets cleaned at 5 am on Saturday; pick up the Flying Bisons beer and marinate turkeys for the volunteer party; and dig the hole the tree donated by Urban Roots will be planted in.
Tanya and Joe had a vision they brought to this festival, now in its 8th year. They sell their shirts at 20 different festivals each year, festivals like Clearwater and the Grass Roots Music Festival. This arts festival was organized to bring something inspirational to Buffalo. Come out and be inspired this weekend, two full days of dancing, music, arts, environmental and cultural areas, projects for children, and good food.
10am-6pm on Saturday, August 25th and 11am-5pm Sunday, August 26th. On Elmwood Avenue, between Ferry and Lafayette.

Perhaps you're familiar with public access broadcasting and its noble intentions for communal enrichment. Or perhaps you just thought about Wayne's World and instead wondered why he wore such a devastatingly tight t-shirt. But if you look you'll see the wealth of opportunity provided for by a national airwave designated specifically for our local ambitions. Buffalo's favorite daughter, Ani DiFranco, is a prime example of broadcast worthy television with a local …
Opening night is normally a series of highs and lows. Anticipation, nerves and excitement go hand and hand, for a new playwright it can be agony. Wondering how people perceiving your work, your words, your motivations. Until the curtain closes and there is an eruption of applause, you’re on pins and needles; a sign of a good show is the audience feeling that anticipation as well. I was able to attend opening night of “Triangles” at Road Less Traveled Productions and it was a …
Want a different kind of holiday celebration? One that celebrates the dysfunction of the holidays instead of the usual phony good times and cheer? Squeaky Wheel is hosting their seventh annual Dysfunctional Holiday Party and although it may be celebrating the unhappy side of the holidays, it’s still sure to be a delightful event with a lot of fun and screenings.
This holiday extravaganza isn’t so much as a party of dysfunction as it is a celebration of the dysfunction that co …
The critically acclaimed Japanese experimental trio, Boris, will be performing this coming Monday at Soundlab. Recently ending their tour opening for Nine Inch Nails, Boris will be sharing the stage of a more personal venue with Boston’s Clouds.
Boris, an act that has spanned over a decade, found it’s footing with an American audience when their genre-bending album “Pink”, released in the States in 2006 by Southern Lord became an immediate appeal to critics and fans alik …

The temperature is supposed to be in the high 80's and there will be thousands of people attending - I wonder if there is any way to stop people from bringing their animals/pets to this thing. I've seen newborn puppies and old dogs etc. sweltering at these festivals.

Actually, dogs are not allowed at events like these. See city code:
Chapter 78, Animals. Article IV Control of Dogs, 78-18. Running at large; special events. Notwithstanding SubsectionA, no person shall bring a dog, either leashed or unleashed, to a special event held on municipal property.

This is, IMO, the best festival of the year. It is an opportunity to see and purchase much more affordable items of art and it is wonderful to run into people you have not seen in a while (I got to watch people for four hours a day while playing at the Delish beer and wine garden). People were just plain having a great time. I thought the event was really well organized. The streets were cleaned within hours of the end of the event. The organizers should be very proud of themselves!
