Drinking In Buffalo: Gabriel's Gate

With its iconic angel standing on the roof and clutching two flaming torches, Gabriel's Gate exudes a brooding, mysterious vibe from the onset. But enter through its wrought iron gates and you'll find this distinctly Allentown bar is every bit warm and friendly.
Gabe’s Gate has become a fixture on Allen St. for its great bar setting and reasonably priced food - the perfect marriage of liquor and chicken wings. The dark wood interior has detailed carved booths and several working fireplaces to keep warm beside in the winter. Above the bar itself, you can look up to its peaked ceiling, dimly lit by a chandelier and stained glass windows. The building was built as a row house in 1864 and still blends into the traditional neighborhood architecture.
The bar is centered in the midst of a long dining room area where two large TVs make it a great place to watch a Sabres' game. You can easily order a drink and the bartenders will serve you well. Though the fireplaces and the low lighting make it a comfortable place in the winter, Gabe's Gate actually has a lovely patio that opens up in the warmer months and gives the drinking space some extra length.
Notable on tap is Gabriel’s Brown Ale, an English-style nut brown ale brewed out of Honeoye Falls. The wine list includes a good Toasted Head Chardonnay and selections from Robert Mondavi, which are always winners.
Help yourself at the popcorn machine off to the side, but for something more substantial you'll want to order the chicken wings (extra crispy) as their some of the best in the city.
The bar attracts a diverse crowd of adults both young and old. Despite the restaurant you usually don’t see children in the dining area and especially not after the dinner hour. When Allentown is at its most crowded on weekend nights, Gabe’s Gate remains pretty low key. Aside from a Sabres game night, you’ll typically find a mellow crowd and cool alternative music playing in the background.
The only issue I might have is that the narrowness of the bar area puts drinking customers just steps away from the seated dining area and sometimes the space can seem cramped. But most diners are in Gabe’s Gate to enjoy the bar atmosphere and this doesn’t seem to take away from anyone’s experience.
With the wind blowing and the temperatures dropping, get over to Gabriel’s Gate for a drink, some good company and a welcomed dose of warmth by the fireplace.

It's great to see stylish, hip, new restaurants pop up downtown such as Sea Bar on Ellicott Street, which specializes in contemporary Japanese food. A clean ultra-modern space, Sea Bar’s dining room is quaint and inviting. The sleek sushi bar has counter seating and the wet bar, with beer, sake, and wine, has at least 10 sakes to choose from on any given night. We were happy to try a Sojitio, a sake mojito, which had the right amount of mint without too much sweetness.

Ten years ago, the downtown of My Fair City was forever altered when a Big Dinosaur appeared on the scene. Thankfully—unlike 1950’s Tokyo—when this dino showed up our downtown wasn’t flattened, but considerably improved. Dinosaur Bar B Que, a restaurant that originated in downtown Syracuse in the 1980’s, planted its foot in downtown Rochester in 1998. It was an instant hit—it’s common to have a line waiting to get in at all times. And it’s clearly Hog Heaven— …
Cecelia’s Ristorante & Martini Bar is prepared to guide their guests through the tastes of fall with their brand new fall menu. Although it is getting a bit too cold for the patio, the hardy food inside will warm things right up.
I started out with the Harvest Salad ($8) and the “Lumpy” Crab Cakes ($9). The Harvest Salad was served with a rosemary citrus vinaigrette, and topped with apricots, beets, pine nuts, walnuts, dried cranberries, and other assorted dried fruits. …
One of the perks my daughter's friends enjoy about a sleepover at my home (other than rearranging the furniture for movie time) are the crepes I serve our guests in the morning.
I can remember sleepover breakfasts from when I was a kid that consisted of potato chips and soda from the night before. If the lack of sleep didn't make us dizzy and irritable enough, the fat, salt and sugar we ingested in the morning would make sure the entire day would be counted for lost. Ugh.

The Gabriel's Brown Ale is brewed by Custom Brewcrafters (in Honeoye Falls, indeed), a unique brewery that principally brews custom beers for restaurants in the area- JP Bullfeathers has one from them as well. I'm not typically impressed with their beers, though they're certainly a cut above the Megas. Gabriel's Brown is an easy-drinking session beer, balanced slightly to the malt side as one would expect for the style, but not extreme in any dimension. As such, it pairs well with red meat and cheese- consider a cheeseburger or even a steak slathered in Stilton or Gorgonzola to accompany your pint. Slainte!

Best wings in Buffalo, period. During a snowfall, there's no better restaurant table in Buffalo than at the front window of the Gate, by the fireplace. I miss the place.

Great food. I love the Norwood Ave chicken sandwhich. Wings are great! Setting is perfect for both winter and summer. I'm craving the food just thinking about it. Always a good choice.

I love this place, but I've been edgy about going back since the last time I was there. When someone says "hey, I'm really allergic to lemon, please don't put a slice in my iced tea" it's usually good to say "oh wow, our iced tea is lipton brisk, it has lemon already in it!" instead of saying OK and sending my lunch date into near-anaphylaxis.

This place is great, they are always really nice and the atmosphere is great. When I had friends from Europe in town we went here for burgers and beer. They loved it. Anyone who likes the place should try their fish fry. It is my second favorite in town, big, crispy and it even has great coleslaw something most places just add for decor.
Gabriel's Brown Ale is also delish, Has almost a chocolate flavor to it. Something very enjoyable with your dinner and that is hard to come by with American Beers.

The Gate was originally a entertainment cocktail lounge, the class act of Allen Street, fine furs, suits, coat check girls, the place to be. Still looks great.

You can't be serious, sbrof; you typically seem pretty well informed. Maybe you're thinking too narrowly. There is possibly an oversupply of good American beers!

This place is a wintertime favorite.. fireplaces.. amazing soups (french onion is one of the best in town as well as any of their cheddar soups), the atmosphere is awesome... bartenders are OK waitresses are great. I could do without the kitchen help greeting me on their smoke break as I walk in. The food is simple by design and delicious. Great Steaks, burgers, sandwiches, and definatly the wings. Look out for the Cajun Chicken Alfredo special... its awesome.. if you really want it.. they will make it for you no problem. GREAT PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
