Dogs Dig It

Dogs Dig It

Story Options

Sunday afternoon, the dog park at LaSalle Park was THE PLACE to be. When Stella, Sophie and I arrived there were more than twenty dogs, and this continued throughout the hour and a half that we enjoyed the wide open off leash space. Groups came and went, and a good guess would put us at least 90 if not 100 different dogs taking part in the fun within the time we were around. There were big dogs and little dogs, round dogs and skinny dogs, and they seemed to kind of make up their own play groups of similar sizes, though there was a lot of running and romping around amongst the whole group.

There is space for dogs like Sophie to fetch like a fiend, while Stella had plenty of room to roam and roll. We met all kinds of mixes and pure breeds, Boston Terriers, Standard Poodles, Afghans, Dobermans, Beagles, Schnauzers, Boxers, Mastiffs, and Great Danes. Good times were had by all, and are we ever ready for a nap after meeting so many new friends.

What Others Have To Say

I think that there should be part of the park be sectioned off for small dogs. My female mini (spayed) was harassed by a doberman and his beligerant person. Not a pleasant experience. Here is what I posted on this site with a previous article and the schnauzer chat on schnazer rescue.

Here's what I think! I love the idea of a dog park. We have two mini schnauzers and we took them to the dog park today. All the dogs and owners were getting along splendidly until an aggressive doberman and his ignorant owner who had almost no control over him. Several people made comments about how uncomfortable they were with this pair. Within a few minutes the man and his doberman cleared the park except one shepherd who was behaving himself. As were getting ready to leave the doberman started circling my schnauzer and and myself. I yelled to the owner "Come get your dog several times" when I finally got his attention. My husband chased the dog away. The d. owner said that his dog wouldn't be acting like that if my dog wasn't so scared. Helloooooo!!! Then the shepherd owner yelled at me that my dog wasn't hurt and that if let my dog off the leash everything would be all right. I replied "Not that its any of your business we're leaving". I told the d. owner If he could not control his dog he shouldn't be there.

Here is the main problem as I see it: There are rules but no enforcement.

I am going to go back but I am going to stand my ground. I will not deny my dogs the fun of a dog park just because of a couple of bad apples.

    I would appreciate feedback please.

BTW the feedback was a lot and mostly the same. Most dog parks have areas for small dogs!

While plans for the permanent dog park are still fluid, the folks in charge need to pay attention to judi's suggestion- there really needs to be separate large and small dog sections. Most new dog parks are going this route. As for rules, peer pressure works best. Unfortunately it doesn't sound like there was any hope for the doberman and his ignorant owner.

Looking forward to join in the fun! DSC_0407.JPG

The first day the dog park was open, I was there with my dog Kingsley (a very friendly lab/husky mix). She was playing nicely with a bulldog, when in came a shepard. The shep went straight for the bulldog and snapped. After pulling the dogs apart, I kindly asked the owner to take her dog and leave. I told her to bring her dog back if she chose, but that she should not be there at that time. Technically, if two dogs get into it - they should both leave. That's how the rule stands now. In this case, having it been so instant and unprovoked (and all the shepard fault, sorry to say), the other dog was okay to stay. If I hadn't said anything and made both owners aware of that rule, they would have gone on with thier business and maybe never returned to utilize it. In our case, we all understand the rules and everyone left happy. My dog and I had nothing to do with the fight, but we want the park to be here to stay in Buffalo - that's why I stood up and did what's right. We all ahve to do this when we see a dog there that shouldn't be there.

The park has to become all of ours. If you chose to utilize this great addition to Buffalo, you have to treat it as if it is yours. In saying that, we are the very ones who need to enforce the rules. If a dog is being blatently aggressive, the owner should be respectful enough of the other dogs and dog owners there and leave. We unfortunately don't live in a perfect world. So that leaves it up to us - if dog owners are not respecting that soo very important rule, they should then be asked to leave by anyone present. EVERYONE needs to understand and enforce that - it's the only way the park will work - and stay open to Buffalonians.

Dogs have thier days, just like we do. It's good for dogs to be around other dogs. Some have been all thier lives and are fine around anyone/everyone. Others haven't been and therefore aren't good with others because they've never been properly socialized. Owners need to understand that if you have a dog that needs to be socialized maybe taking the dog to a park with 30 others and letting them loose maybe isn't the best idea. Start small - go on an off time for a short period of time and really watch your dog. Gradually increase and you should be fine. If the dog still has issues, sorry to say that maybe it isn't for you (and your pup).

I know that signs for the park with the rules posted are in the works - but remember that it's up to all of us to enforce them!!! If we want this gem to stay, we all need to step up and treat it as if it's our own!

I am the owner of the bulldog that was attacked . We have visited the dog park sometimes twice per day since it opened. My Stoli has become the social butterfly of the park and loves to play with the other dogs. He also loves the attention he gets from the other dog owners. He roams from group to group looking for someone to scratch his butt since he can't reach it on his own.

I was told about the park from Stol's vet. My husband and I loved the idea about a Dog Park from the get go. We attended the opening day kickoff and had a great time. Stoli was attacked by the German Shepard as described by Molendast. The owner was apologetic but did say that her dog had fought with 2 pit bulls on Grand Island the day before. Well if your dog has a history of fighting DON"T BRING HIM TO THE PARK! This woman was there today before we arrived. Her dog attacked a sweet 5 month old chocolate lab and left him with a bloody ear.

I guess she hasn't figured out her dog is not socialized. After talking to the owner of the lab we came to the conclusion that the same Shepard attacked both our dogs. Please everyone be vigilant and watch out for this dog and its irresponsible owner. Don't let one owners ignorance ruin it for the rest of us and our dogs that are well mannered. Please let's do everything to keep this park open. Thank you to the couple on Saturday for bringing in there own fencing to cover the holes. Big sloppy kisses from Stoli.

Hey, can we have a cat park next, so they can show off their best shedding, napping, preening, and furniture scratching abilities?

    Just kidding.

If y'all pick up after Rover so I don't have to hose down my shoes after a walk in the park, I'm happy.

i hope leashless frequenters of delaware park take advantage of the new place. then we and our (leashed) papillon can safely stick to dp while the big guys get their run on in lasalle. (i'm suspicious of anyone who claims to have good control of a dog not on a leash. and this is from someone who grew up with the best golden retriever.)

Zim says: "Go ahead Lilly...say hello...."

"ruff-ruff, ruarrf, ruff...." Translation from Canine:

"Hi, is there a German Shepherd named Guss out there? Remember me? We sniffed at the park today. NIce seeing you. I'll be back again this week, if the Master agrees. What a great OLA dog park!"

I think the dog park is great. The possibility of injured pups, not good! I've always wanted to see a dog park in Buffalo. No doubt though, you have to be prepared for some more aggressive types when you visit a dog park. I'd like to think they play peacefully together for the most part, but (like anything) I guess there are those few that spoil it for the rest. Unfortunately, some owners aren't able to recognize potentially dangerous behaviors in dogs and most just aren't careful enough about interactions with strangers -- fellow dogs and people. It's too bad there isn't some sort of mandatory training and socialization class for every puppy. Our local SPCA on Ensminger Rd. has wonderful Puppy Kindergarten and so many of these behaviors can be harnessed at a young age, when they should!

I love the dog park. It's about time we have one. I believe its a quality of life issue. WNY is better because it's open. It's great for the dogs and great for us people....i've met so many new people. We go every saturday. I've met people from Amherst, OP, West Seneca, Lackawanna, Tonawanda, ect. I think it also helps a large part of WNY discover part of WNY they dont usually get to see.

For the hour or two that we are there, there is always one or two small scraps between a couple of dogs. I think thats typical dog behavior and from what i've seen the owners as a group have been great.

Well the prelimnary #s are in! The dog park users have spoken! We are averaging 12 poeple per hour and 14 dogs. 1400 human visitors a week that normally would have never gone here! This means when our temporary permit ends Oct 15, there will be around 11,000 new visitors to OUR Waterfront Park! At peak times of the day we are getting 50 people and dogs coming to LaSalle Park. They are coming in from as far as away as Rochester, Batavia, Attica, Alden,Amherst, East Amherst, Orchard Park, Hamburg, West Seneca, Kenmore, the Tonawandas and of coarse Buffalo. PLEASE VISIT OUR WEBSITE for more info and continued updates on how to keep this park as a permanent asset in our community. If you would like to help with the #s, please email buffalodogs@hotmail.com with the amount of people, dogs, and time of day when you are there.www.buffOLA.org PLEASE WRITE AND CALL THE MAYOR AND COUNTY PARKS COMMISIONER!!-- Thanks Again!, microparkJay

I took my boston terrier to the park yesterday (sunday) and he had a BLAST. Thankfully all of the dogs there were very well behaved. I really love the idea of having this park; I hope it can become a permanent fixture. Can we plant some more grass?? I had to give Abner a bath as soon as we got home! Is there some kind of petition going around for the park? ?? Regarding aggressive dogs, unfortunately some owners are truly ignorant about how to train and take care of their dogs. My pup was attacked almost 2 months ago while we were minding our own business walking down Ashland. The woman owned an extremely aggressive dog who went for Abner the second he saw him. I had to wrestle it off of my pup. 15 huge sutures and a draining tube later, he's finally healed and thankfully we've re-socialized him and he's no longer scared of other dogs. My advice? Go buy Cesar Milan's book. I'm serious. I'm about to buy another copy and anonymously place it at the doorstep of the attack dog's house. Even if you've got a great dog, it can only help you more fully understand how to take care of your dog. See everyone at the park!!

What are the plans for extending the park's season beyond October 15th? Seems as if this sould be a great year-round addition to the park.

although having never been to the park I did encounter a woman yesterday at the far end of Lasalle park who was playing with her dog near the scuzzy boat ramp at the water where the condo's begin....I had asker her about the dog park and she had two suggestions.....seperate areas for small and large dogs.......and some sort of shade for the dogs and their owners. Seperating the bigger dogs may help to ease the uneasiness of the possibility of encountering an aggressive dog.....although one must be careful not to hastily blame owners who's dogs become agressive at the park...unless they are already aware of this potential behavior. A few years back I brought my rather large dog to rumsey field having never experienced any aggression from my dog towards people or other dogs....that was until one day he snapped and would have certainly killed another dog, a completely helpless non-willing participant in a fight.....since that day I've had the nerve to bring him back. I can't take that chance that he won't snap again.

I just visited the dog park for the first time last week. I have a 90 lb Bloodhound puppy. She is almost 2 but for the breed she has at least another year of 'puppy' in her. Unfortuantly, the breed is also fairly hard headed and she knows her commands but definelty chooses when and when not to obey. The reason I am writing this is because we really enjoyed the park and would like to continue visiting. I would like to say, however, that I understand she is big and big puppies can be a little much so if anyone ever feels intimidated by her or feels she is being too aggressive over a ball or is just too hyper please just ask us to leave. She loves to play and has been going to parks since she was a baby but let's face it everyone has off days and we don't want to make anyone uncomfortable.

The parks a great idea and I'm so glad that Buffalo has made this step.

Well there is a law (not enforced) that says the dogs have to be up to date ontheir shots. That worries me also so I am with you sime14222. Also, now I am scared for my pooch to be mutilated by agressive dogs! (See my post as the 1st one).

After my first visit with my 4 year old boxer this past Sunday I found the temporary dog park a great place to spend some time. Being a temporary setting it does need a few things when and if a permanant site is made. More grass as formerly mentioned. A double door so you can come in shut the gate behind you, then open another one before entering. As for a seperate partition for smaller dogs I didnt see any issues while I was there. Most of the smaller dogs were chasing the larger dogs. A few things to bring with to the park. 1 Lots of water and a dog dish. 2 Something to pick up after your dog. 3 Hand wipes and dog wipes. 4 Not your best shoes or sneakers. 5 Toys

Can people PLEASE stop bringing in food or treats into the dogpark - if my dog smells treats in your pocket she will not leave your side and therefore will not be running and playing with the other dogs. I know ther is a sign saying this but I think people either aren't reading it or they're ignoring it.
