Denim Bar

In my eyes, fashion is all about wearing what the masses can not find in every shopping mall, strip plaza or major artery of my hometown. The new buzz going around the city revolves around one of Elmwood’s newest chic boutiques. The Denim Bar has entered the Buffalo women’s market because as Justin Anderson [owner/operator] exclaims, “There is a clear lack of hot designer clothing here & the women in Buffalo deserve exposure to some of the countries hottest lines.”
I stopped in recently and love the simplicity and energy of the space- bright, clean and full of killer fashion. The shop feels like the Diesel store in NYC. Denim Bar carries Jeans for everybody ranging from $40 to $300- including: Antiq, Raven, Plastic, Plush Premium, Travetini & Flying Monkey. They currently carry 9 of the hottest, most unique denim in the industry and plan on adding 6 more names by October. I asked Justin how he decides which lines he carries and he passionately replied “We buy fashion, fit, and price- in that order.” Don’t let the name fool you either --- I get a feeling this emporium will morph into whatever Buffalo demands [the doors have only been open for 3 months]; Denim Bar houses some of the kewlest style names in the industry as well: Black Halo, Nicole Miller, Chan Lu, AB Paris to name a few.

In talking to Justin I clearly get the sense that he loves being located in the queen city. “Why should women drive to the suburbs for high-end denim & clothing when they can stay in the city, shop here, and then stick around and visit some of the other awesome shops and restaurants Buffalo has to offer?” He is already talking about possible expansion and is currently in negotiations to operate out of the building on the corner of Elmwood and Auburn in addition to his current location. I am hoping one day there is enough demand to warrant some men’s fashions!
Women - you have to check out Denim Bar @ 818 Elmwood Ave [across from Lexington Co-op] --- Summer Hrs – Mon-Sat 11-7 & Sun 12-6. 716 228 2632.

Its about time most of the women around here got rid of their "Gap Mom Jeans."
Attention Buffalo women............ High Rise Jeans are OUT! Low rise are in.
Buffalo Bills sweat shirts, tinted octagon glasses and 80's Mullets are also a no go for downtown women.
Get with the times. Slap a nice pair of designer jeans on any woman and things start looking a lot better.
This place will do well and Good luck....very much needed on Buffalo.

For those living under a rock the last 3 years, Fahionable jeans cost $150 $400 nowadays. These are not the LEE mom jeans that girls in Buffalo usually wear from 1987, but rather True Religion, Antik, Paper Denim Rock & Republic, etc that stylish women all over the world (except Buffalo) actually wear. People here are stuck in the 80's with their tapered leg levi's, stonewashed Guess, and Tight as Wranglers. Wake up people. This store should do well, if the williamsville people shop here

If you know anything about fashion, low rise jeans are on their way out! It is also important that you purchase jeans that flatter your figure. We are not all supposed to follow every trend. Case in point ,all the high school and college age girls whose bodies were not meant to be funneled into low rise or skinny jeans!

While I wouldn't personally spend $300 for a pair of jeans, I know there are people who do. And I think it's great that Elmwood could support a store with these prices points. BUT.....I think this post begs the question of what's news and what's an ad. Intended or not, this post is an ad and not what I want to read as the "top story" when I sign onto BR. This seems to be a trend with this web site. If you're going to post it, at least create a separate heading for this stuff. Some kind of "Meet the Merchant" or whatever you want to call it. Truthfully, I think BR could use a top to bottom sorting out along these lines. It seems like "The Yard" is constantly getting prime post space....why not create an "events" heading. I'd also like to see one for Queenseye's 'gee whiz" discoveries around town. Charming?..yes....stuff I want to take up my blog time?....NOPE. Do us all a favor and categorize, please.

bufflow, we are always looking for more people to contribute - not just to editorial, but to the site and its make-up. Send me an email and we'll map out your ideas. In the past we had a sports channel. That didn't work. Then we had a channel dedicated to fashion and the like - that didn't work. We are open to your idea, but we need expertise - someone that can really show us what we are doing wrong while giving us examples of what cities the size of Buffalo are doing right. Personally, I feel that the small business owner deserves the right to be mentioned along with the bigger businesses in the city. I owned a retail store on Elmwood for twelve years and wished that media gave my business recognition without having to buy an ad.

Before being able to offer suggestions about changes, it might be helpful to understand what's judged a success. When you say a particular channel was not successful, is that gauged by 'views', not getting advertisers for the specific channel, or not enough comments to posts?
I think you could have a channel devoted to very specific locations (street level?) that would be moderated by someone you appointed (who lives on the block, and passes word around that the e-block club exists). Different streets have email lists, North Pearl, Franklin, Allen, Days Park...etc. Click on 'Streets' and it gets you to thirty different streets... I'd be interested to read the general city articles, then check on anything specific on my street. Granted you need a certain critical mass to make it work, but by offering it, you may be pleasantly surprised at the response.

Why would a new business, only 3 months old, open a second location not even a block away from the first one? It does not make sense. Would he close the first location once the lease is signed for the second space or keep both running simultaneously?

Best of luck to the owner. While you don´t normally think of Buffalo as the mecca of $300 jeans there are people that will buy them and I think they have a great location and design so I really hope it works for them and for buffalo. Obviously these type of stores are not for everyone, no matter what city they are in but the fact that we have some diversity and people willing to open modern stores is Buffalo is just great

Hey Assaroni, True Religion? Rock & Republic? These are brands for the masses - now available at most department stores. The first line in this post says something about wearing clothes not available at every mall. If you wear True Religion, Rock & Republic, Paper Denim, etc., you are, in fact, several years behind. Just because you are choosing to wear a brand that you see a lot doesn't make you fashionable.
While I am a premium denim wearer, I will also be the first to say that it's just not about the brands you have on, and more about the look you put together. Who cares about these awful back pocket embellishments telling everybody what kind of jeans you have on? I'm sure there are plenty of guys and girls who put together better looks than you with Amvets/thrift store finds if that's the mentality you have.

Glad to see this post as I wasn't aware of the store even though I spend a lot of time on Elmwood. Always glad to hear about new shops.
I like the variety of posts as the lead, even, or especially, those I would never seek out. It keeps me better informed of a wider variety of topics.
Can the complainer follow just the City tag (not sure that's technically possible) if that is what they are interested in?
On the success of different channels or posts, I would like a feature to rate the original posts. There are many posts that I don't respond to, but which have told me of something new or useful. I don't want to waste other readers' time by posting a "good post" post, but I want to encourage the reporting of these items. Many of the Events listings fall into this situation: glad the site carried the notice, but there's no need to tell the site I'm going.

We could also use a few new MEN'S Stores with NEW Styles. So sad and sometimes gross to see all the guys in Buffalo wearing dirty looking T-Shirts (often Tank Tops) Bills attire, mullets and they actually believe that the same look greats on everyone. Um,,,, no..... Try some new tight jeans (They are IN right now) the big baggy look and plain blue jeans are OVER people. Try some cool T-Shirts with designs other than logos (AB Fitch, BILLS, etc. is so over worn, it's TIRED), I could go on, but please pick up a brand new magazine to see what is in right now instead of living in the past (this goes for the women too). ....Doesn't Buffalo have the most singles????? Hmmmm, I wonder why??? Because most of you don't care how you look, so, why would anyone care to step to you???

That's exactly what I'm talking about gaustad. Most people in Buffalo look so pitiful and sad. Yet, those are the ones who make fun of the latest fads in fashion and those who wear them. When I was in B-lo last month, I totally felt like an outcast with the dirty stares by the same people you just described. But then again with no exposure to the latest trends, how do we exept the local's to really "Get It"? I mean, look at downtown, You have ONE Woman's store and the rest (JP's, Tent City) that cator to the fat people since all they carry are Size Large and XX Large and MC Hammer Pants in the back of JP's or so they did a few years back on my last visit. So my point being, with very few options (that really suck) and no big retailers in the city, how can we really expect people in the city to look up-to-date and hip?

NO MONEY - NO STYLE
Its not the lack of shopping, its the inability to afford nice sh!t. Buffalo is the second poorest and laziest city in the country second to Detroit. ahahahahhaahah gaustad - they need to do a post just about that - "Buffalo's Fashion Problemssss" it would be an eye opener for many people that I have no concept of style or what they look like wearing all that crap. Buffalo is this hodge podge of varying degrees of bad style or no style. I have dressed up on my occasions taking the time and effort , only to have my friends yelling in the background "this is buffalo"!! I hate hearing that but its true!! Its like very evident everywhere you go!! Its like no one cares so why should I or I do not want to stand out too much by wearing something too trendy... It would be soo refreshing to see some extra effort on style around buffalo, it may inspire a trend influencing more fashion related stores to open downtown, no one is going to spend 300 dollars on jeans when people everywhere are wearing old torn up jeans from 15 years ago. If I were to open a business in buffalo a clothing store would be on the bottom of my list for the above reasons...

Newell, someone desperately needs to write an article about the lack of style in Buffalo and what do about it.
The lack of style gives us all a bad name.
It is a real problem that needs to be addressed - most people from out of town identify us as losers with no fashion sense. Perhaps we can at least help some people around here match their clothes and remove their facial hair. Perhaps hand out some crest white strips too!
Start simple and work our way up!
Report this

That was very well put, GDF81. I too, have friends there who always yell at me "Why you dressed up all the time"....and to me, when they yell like that, I thought it was 'casual'. People need to get out of the status quo "SLOB" look that was semi popular in the early 90's. It's 2008 people and 'FRESH' 'TIGHT' looks are "IN" right now, but when I was visiting, all I seen was kids in Grunge attire (that looked died out in the late 90's or so I thought), hip hop kids still wearing the extra baggy jeans and skirt style T-shirts (FITTED IS IN NOW), the semi 80's hip hop look (big gold chains, kango hats, tight jeans, big sneakers and fades) is what HOT in NYC and other large cities right now. I could just picture a bunch of stylish kids from Brooklyn walking the streets of Downtown Buffalo being harrased and laughed at, when in fact, if you brought those people from Buffalo to Brooklyn..they would be laughed at for looking so nasty and out of touch with the times.

I'm no fashionista but I've never worn lee jeans past the 3rd grade, never had a mullet (or a femlet for those up on your mullet terminology) and have NEVER spent $300 on a pair of jeans. Get over the labels, people. It's pathetic. There's a world of a difference between being fashion conscious and a fashion victim.
That said, I will still check out the store & see if there's anything fabulous I must have that's on the lower end of that price scale. The best finds I've gotten come from little boutiques and thrift stores, and I'm always interested in what's new & different. Which is totally possible within my price range.

And while I agree that this post sounds a bit like an ad its nice to see that a local store was highlighted on here that apparently didn't buy ad space. I'll be disappointed if that isnt the case. I enjoy reading about these stores and what they have to offer since I sometimes don't notice them on my own.
As for GDC: I find it comical that many of his posts blast the people of Buffalo for being intolerant of homosexuals and minorities while he calls people he deems to have no fashion sense "slobs" "nasty" "pitiful" "sad" and "gross." He seems to be just as intolerant of others that are not like him as the people he constantly remarks about.

I concur with the above post, we may certainly not be the most fashion fwd city, but by no means is this city just a bunch of zoobaz sporting, mullet rocking, high top town. Its not all that often I actually get to view a specimen like described in some of these posts. I think the majority of our population is more just plain jane, frumpy dressing type. So some of you really need to get over yourselves though, your talking like everyone should be wearing the same clothes and dressing the exact same, which in turn would just make something 'trendy' and then not cool, unless thats what you thin is cool, because thats what everyone is sporting. I really cant figure out if some of you think that being stylish is just following all the trends, wearing what everyone else is wearing that season, or creating your own unique style. Is being stylish wearing the same thing/look as the next trendy guy, or sporting your own unique style. Me, I laugh at all the lemmings walking down the street looking like a bunch of twins that were dress the same by their mother, and give props to the people who actually have their own style and arent just following the next trend. (insert tight girl jeans here) If you know style, you were wearing these jeans when the skaters started rocking them again about 5 years ago, not now when half the youth of today are.

i don't know where all of you people hang out that you see hordes of people with mullets in levis...... I'm not saying that Buffalo is the most fashionable place on earth, but there are plenty of people here who know how to dress. The comment about amvents or goodwill, there are many people who honestly make those looks work. I personally have never bought anything from a thrift store or anything of the like, but I would never look down upon those who do. The people on here who are insulting these people, I'm guessing that you probably own one or two designer pieces of clothing that you wear all the time and think that makes you better than everyone else around and that you're fashionable. Fashion isn't about the label, its how you look in the clothes. That being said, it is good that Buffalo does have greater access to designer jeans, although I would like to see some premium quality denim from local designers in an elmwood shop and leave the designers at Tony Walker.

As for this shop, the only other alternative (besides a couple new stores at the galleria that jumped on the bandwagon) was Tony Walker. Having this option on Elmwood speaks volumes of the districts ability to sustain such high price points and could prove to be an eye opener for other chic retailers.

First of all, designer jeans or any jeans that look great do not have to cost $300, but they can. And right or wrong, there are enough people in this world, country and city who will pay that.
gaustad, I completely agree with your sentiments regarding the problem of outdated fashions and women not dressing to look their best! But, come on, the responses to you and others degrading nearly all of Buffalo offer a more accurate picture. Don't get me wrong, I cringe at the women and men alike who wear outdated clothes and sport unflattering haircuts and accessories.
Nevertheless, there are plenty who do things right and plenty others who just haven’t yet realized why people dress well. They think they are wasting their money or spend too much time looking in the mirror or are just plain vain. I think they’re wrong and I hope they discover the reasons why it’s okay to look good and how important it can be to feel good about how you look and feel. Besides that I find it fun and somewhat of an art to look good, that’s what it’s really about in my opinion.
And I must say, you are looking for women in all the wrong places if you're not finding any hot ladies in Buffalo. There are many who wouldn't think twice about dropping a couple hundred on a pair of jeans, can look hot in flip flops and a t-shirt or stilettos and a dress – and that's true style! There are enough of us women who wear thongs like they're the norm and wouldn't dare touch a pair of "granny panties."
I would be happy to point out some locations where you may find these women because they're not on Chippewa! Many of these same not-so-hard-to-find young women will appreciate this new shop on Elmwood because they seek out fashion havens such as this. I know I’m looking forward to making a trip there soon. PHEW, I'm glad I got that out! ;)

Also, I find all the idiot dudebros and sorority ho's clad in bland mall crap clothes to be much tackier than hipsters sporting thrift store finds. Good fashion can work on just about any budget. People tend to confuse beying your way into designer brands with being "fashionable".
People dressing like slobs in public is a problem found all over America, not just Buffalo. And it's not neccessarily a class issue either. Plenty of times i've seen middle to high-income soccer moms trudging through the mall wearing nasty sweatpants. Only about 40-50 years ago people generally dressed up before the went anywhere in public. Look at old photos of people shopping downtown and they were all dressed in their best outfits.
With that said, weaing expensive jeans is NOT dressing up. Jeans are formal, no reason to waste so much money on denim.

There is just not enough of those stylish people to make any impression for me.. nothing to inspire me to go and buy what they have on.. (that would be a nice competitive feeling to want to spend some money on clothing because you want to stay trendy) This place is the pitts for style and anyone that can not see that needs to look around.. suggestion take a walk down main st during lunch time.. you would think you were in the 80's again? All this talk of fashion or lack thereof is a joke, I hope. We live in a city with a terrific philharmonic, world class chamber music, live theater, a rich literary culture, interesting and engaged people who literally give their lives to make Buffalo even better......and yet there are people here worried about what jeans people wear??? Hypersensitivity to what people wear is a sure sign of a provincial mind. Making fun of what people wear in a public forum? Well, why not just return to junior high? God help us.

I've been to that shop before, well, tried to get in, which is usually closed. The owner is never there. The employees are forever changing & the NON seasonal $400 jeans.. you can pick up at Marshalls & Off the 5th for under $60. Do your homework people.
