Dario Argento Double Feature

If, by Sunday night, you haven't had your complete fix of Halloween frights and sights, then try to catch the first New Phoenix b-movie double feature. Starting at 5:30pm the first flick, Deep Red, will start to roll. From there, scary movie lovers can sit back and enjoy the main feature attraction, another film by Dario Argento called Suspiria (starts at 7pm). Up until now we've been showing mostly low budget relatively unknowns such as Robot Monster, Planet of the Vampires, Spider Baby, The Brainiac, and Phantom Planet.
We'll be chalking up two to the roster this Sunday in honor of All Hallows Eve weekend. For those of you who may not be familiar with Italian film director, Dario Argento, his movie Deep Red is considered by many the best giallo (Italian thriller) ever produced. Even John Carpenter has attributed Argento with inspiration for Halloween, the movie that opened the floodgates for hundreds of slasher flicks to come. I recently learned that Argento worked on the production of George Romero's Dawn of the Dead. But it was ultimately Suspiria that really shined a spotlight on Argento's career. The movie is shocking to say the least, and the film score by Goblin rules. These movies are not to be missed if you're really into the Halloween scene.

Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

On the Romero-Argento connection, I just found out last night, on seeing Romero's Land of the Dead (2005) at the George Eastman House here, that Dario's daughter, Asia Argento, plays a lead character in that zombie flick-turned social commentary. Picture Uma Thurman - a pleasant exercise - as a brunette, and that's Asia.
As for Suspiria, it's a movie that grabs you by the throat from the beginning and pretty much doesn't let go - the Goblin soundtrack seriously kicks in all the right places.
With these movies, it's not just Halloween kitsch to say "see them if you dare!!" But do see them!

RaChaCha, A recent Argento film came out that is sort of the loose third movie in the trilogy of witch related mayhem called Mother of Tears. That one actually starred Asia Argento and is equally scary and much more squeamish compared to Suspiria.

I'm not one for the gore but Suspiria is a visual treat - and scary up until a kind of lame ending. sorry i missed it.
