Daniels Brings Exhibit To Buffalo
Back in April, Melanie Majewski submitted a wonderful article on Errol Daniels. In it, she goes in to great detail about the artist’s background and photographs. She also makes mention of a show coming to Buffalo once a venue was found. That venue has finally been named: El Museo at 91 Allen Street.
Next Friday, September 12th from 7 PM until 10 PM there will be an Opening Reception for the artist. The exhibit consists of Daniels’ photography which centers on creating portraits of the children he discovered while working with The Stephen Shames Foundation. The foundation takes in vulnerable youth in Uganda who are intelligent and motivated to learn but can’t go to a university due to poverty.
The portraits Daniels takes are of children who have lived through some of the worst conditions anywhere. They are former sex slaves, former child-soldiers and former prostitutes. They have lived through being beaten, raped, having their villages pillaged, having their families slaughtered, and being abducted. Almost all are orphans whose parents were killed in the war or died of the AIDS epidemic still crippling the country. These portraits symbolize their struggle and showcase their will to survive and achieve.
Daniels was in Uganda multiple times and through his work as a board member of The Stephen Shames Foundation, he has documented the lives and experiences of more than a hundred children who live without their parents. The foundation takes these children and gives them a chance at world-class 21st-century skills that they might then one day turn around and use to help their country.
Daniels will be at the Opening Reception on September 12th and will give a talk at 8 PM. His exhibit will be at El Museo until October 18th, after which it will make its way over to Rochester. If you can’t make it out to the Opening Reception, visit El Museo during their regular gallery hours – Thursday through Saturday, noon till 5 PM. Below is a photograph of Daniels in Uganda. Errols work is of the highest quality. He is a total professional & a wonderful humanitarian. This show is a must see. This is not a traveling show. Errol is born & raised in Buffalo.
