County Legislature Honors Boys & Girls Club Members

Sixth District Legislator Maria Whyte, flanked by the recipients, their families and the staff of the Club, read aloud a proclamation honoring the Club and the wonderful community members that make it up. "It really does take a village to raise a child," she said.
In the public eye, the legislative body wanted to recognize and support the positive influence the Boys & Girls Club of the Northtowns has had on its community. The club serves more than 90 youth in the Black Rock neighborhood through after school programs and a variety of social and educational clubs.
Their mission is "to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens."
The three children who were recognized by the club at their annual awards banquet, and by the legislators yesterday in County Hall, are certainly leading themselves and their peers in a positive direction. The 2007 Kids of the Year are Jalisa Conyers, 9, and Jeff Willis, 11; the 2007 Youth of the Year is Deonna Massey, 15.
"This is the highest honor we can give to these kids," said Franco Balassone, director of the Black Rock/Assumption Club. "They are role models for their peers, and this is the kind of recognition that they deserve."
"It's really a big honor," said Jeff, a fifth grader at Olmsted School 56. "I've never been recognized for something like this before."
May we all learn to take some time and truly recognize the children in our lives who are making smart decisions, leading productive lives, and looking whole-heartedly toward their future. Because their future is ours as well.

Here's a rerun of a post Steel did two and a half years ago. A building with an already rich history back then, it has even more of a story to tell now. Fortunately, due to the hard work and foresight of a group of neighbors, preservationists, a great lawyer and a developer with the wherewithal and vision to turn an imminent demolition around, one of Steel's favorite buildings has a future too.
This marvelous edifice is on Jersey Street just west of Richmond. It is on a great …
