Electronically Connect With Canisius College Athletics

Story Options

For some time there has been a disconnect when it comes to the Canisius athletics and the community. The disconnect can be blamed on the ugly blue wall (elevated parking lot) that acts as a barrier between the community and the sporting events. In many college towns the athletic fields are at street level, which gives passers-by the feeling that they are part of the college rather than shunned by the college. To sporting events take place in the heart of a city can be a spectacular promotion for the college. Writers on BRO have written numerous articles pointing out this disconnect.

Even though the blue barrier remains to this day, Canisius has added an electronic billboard meant to broadcast the events taking place behind the wall. Of course, it would be amazing to see the wall removed someday, but until that day comes, it is nice to see this electronic outreach. Now, when people are waiting at the light (Delavan and Main) they can catch up on the latest Griffs stats instead of seeing blue.

I would still be interested to see if this corner could ever land a small car round about instead of having that sprawling mess of asphalt. Maybe when the Main Street roadway construction makes its way to this intersection we will see an improvement.

When I was at Canisius a few years ago, they had a Masterplan on display in the Library that showed a Hockey Arena planned for that corner. Kind of interesting, but probably unlikely anytime soon. There are several parts of that campus, however, that can't be built upon, or at least not easily, because Scajaqueda Creek is beneath the ground. I'm not sure if this parcel is included in that, I know its close.

This corner should get more attention. This is a start! Next, can we power wash the Metro station? It actually has potential if it wasn't so dirty looking. The crazy angles and shapes might be cool if the concrete and glass were cleaned. Clearly the stations are not design gems, but with proper maintenance and minor improvements they can be better. I know someone will suggest we blow away the stations altogether, but lets be realistic and work with what we've got.

I'm sorry, but as someone that cares about the the city's streetscape, I find this thing to be an eyesore.

Flashing electronic signs should not be allowed on any streets. They're ugly, commerical billboards that have no place in a beautiful city.

I like our metro stations. Yeah, they're a bit brutal, but you won't find any like them anyplace else. I wouldn't suggest building more like them, but they're certainly a bit of a period piece. The platforms downtown, however, those can go.
