Concert for Belfast Summer Relief

There are still tickets left for The Wolfe Tones, Ireland’s seminal folk group, who will play the Buffalo Irish Center at 7:30PM on Monday, February 25.
The Belfast Summer Relief Program is also seeking families to host children from Northern Ireland, ages 10-12, for their six week stay during the summer of 2008 - tentatively the last week of June, the month of July and the first week of August. Hopefully, there will be approximately 50 children participating this year; the exact number will be determined by the success of fundraising efforts.
Preference is given to families with a child or children approximately the same age. The Program covers the cost of airfare, ground transportation, and insurance; the host families are asked to provide room and board along with some “tender loving care.” Hosts are also being sought for the two chaperones that will accompany the children from Derry - one from each school participating in the Program. Families wishing to bring back a child they hosted previously should contact the Program as soon as possible as these places are limited.
Touring in support of their double CD release; “The Troubles - The Story of Our Times.” The Wolfe Tones are working their way towards a special 45th Anniversary concert in Belfast this October.
Their rendition of "A Nation Once Again" by Thomas Osborne Davis was voted the number one song of all time in a BBC World Service vote, beating other songs by well known artists such as Elvis, U2 and The Beatles.
Tickets for the Wolfe Tones are available at the Tara Gift Shoppe 716.825.6700, and can be purchased individually or in tables of ten for $24each. $26 eachat the door, if available.

To start off their 2008-2009 season, the Theatre of Youth is opening with a play that will captivate the children in the audience as their eyes follow the adventures of the well-known heroine Madeline in “Madeline’s Christmas.” With just a handful of performances before Christmas, be sure to get your tickets early so you don’t miss out on this holiday treat.

With a new album hot off the press, this Buffalo folkie chats with Buffalo Rising about the traditional music of New York State, song collecting, and how quitting his day job was among the best things he’s ever done.
AZ: How did folk music, especially historic folk music, become the focus of your career?
DR: Gosh, good question. I wonder that myself sometimes. As I look back, it’s been a long, gradual, even logical progression to this point, but one that I could never hav …

Perhaps you're familiar with public broadcasting and its noble intentions for communal enrichment through music. Or perhaps you just thought about Wayne's World and instead wondered why he wore such a devastatingly tight t-shirt. But if you look you'll see the wealth of opportunity provided for by a national airwave designated specifically for our local ambitions. Buffalo's favorite daughter, Ani DiFranco, is a prime example of broadcast worthy television with …

I thought that "Irish thing" got settled by a Five Families sit-down, so now they're milking us for more? Send the kids to Dublin and teach them international finance and insurance!

What a great program!
My family hosted one summer and I don't think we will ever forget it...
Our guest explained that each day, he was sent to get the paper down on "Bomber's Row" in Derry... later he explained that for fun, he and his friends "threw rocks at cat-lics" - needless to say we only mentioned our catholicism as he got on the bus to go home...
Talk about gaining some perspective...

I go to this concert every year and it's a blast! I also had a girl stay with my family when I was 9. Fourteen years later, we still keep in touch. It's a great program.
