Coffee Chain Eyes Downtown- But Where?

Coffee Chain Eyes Downtown- But Where?

Story Options

A Canadian coffee chain is opening its first American store in Williamsville. Pending village approvals, Coffee Culture will be moving into 5590 Main Street next spring. According to Business First, the company is looking to open several more locations, including downtown Buffalo. The Mississauga, Ontario-based company has 23 existing coffee houses in Southern Ontario with 19 under development. Locations average 2000 sq.ft. with seating for 60.

James Fink has the story:

Williamsville is one of several areas the chain is targeting, according to James Geiger, a broker with Ciminelli Real Estate Services, who is Obsidian’s exclusive agent.

Also under consideration is a site in downtown Buffalo and several other suburban locales.

Peter Karamountzos, Coffee Culture president, said the Buffalo area was chosen after locations in Michigan, Florida and Illinois were considered.

From the company's website:

Coffee Culture Café & Eatery is a perfect spot to grab a quiet cup of coffee, hold a casual business meeting or take advantage of the café's free wireless Internet access and plasma TV; a few sidewalk tables lend a Euro flair.

There's more to this café than you might imagine, aside from great coffee and cozy ambience. The friendly staff serves up all sorts of fresh gourmet foods. Breakfast pastries, bagels and muffins. For lunch and dinner, offerings include grilled panini sandwiches and soups. Late night Saturday & Sunday dessert may just be the best part, with our decadent cakes and rich creamy gelato you can never go wrong — what a perfect way to end the day.

Put on your Sim City and urban planning hat. There is a plethora of retail space available downtown, where do you think they should locate?

It's just a matter of time before the city hippies decry this because it's a chain and not an independent business, not to mention---OMG--out of towners! I say good luck, competition is a good thing. I look forward to visiting.

a location near the courts would be really helpful to all of us working in that area - somewhere close to Franklin/Niagara/Court Street/Statler area would be great. (yes, I know there is a Tim Horton's and Liberty Roasters on Main Street -- but both are usually mobbed, and something even closer to Court systems would also be frequented I promise).

How about that empty space at the corner of Court and Franklin St.? It's right near all the Courts and Government Buildings and is highly visiable.

They should put one in next to HOD on Elmwood where the Thai restaurant used to be. That area needs a coffee shop.

I agree with Dangelo23. The old Peller and Mure (sp?) men's store at that corner would be perfect! Coffee Culture, are you listening? It's a very visible sight, it's right near the convention center, Main Street, City Hall, County Hall and all the courts. And Paladino's new building will hopefully soon fill up the parking lot acros the street. What a nice way to liven up Court Street!

Boy if you ask me that place pictured above has a very similar look and feel to the long vacant yet never used first floor space at 665 Main Street in the theater district. 665 Main perhaps? Home of the BNP and BNE???????

Anywhere along main would be sweet, particularly around mohawk or huron. Or what about on the first floor of one of the genesee gateway buildings. There are so many spots the possibilities are endless

how funny that the BNE and BNP have vacant space...that speaks volumes about its own effectiveness...pathetic

Locations: 1. Renovated space at Huron and Washington - old Howards Shoe location 2. Ground floor of the Croce hotel project on Huron and Franklin 3. Delaware, west side of the avenue just north of Chippewa 4. Genesee Village redo block that just began construction

Of course, Elmwood is a given. Particularly the West Utica block that's starting to take off.

Assaroni, the BNP and BNE don't own the building. It's not their vacant space, they just lease a floor of the building.

These coffee joints;Spot, Starbucks, Tim's or whatever) generate an impressive amount of activity when they set up. Spot and Starbucks spurred a 24/7 intersection at Delaware and Chippewa, the only intersection in Downtown that actually has human activity 7 days a week. I'd love to see a coffee house at every location that has been mentioned here, there cannot be enough. All the new loft conversions should include a coffee joint or simple breakfast bar. There is also a shortage of good breakfast places, especially on the weekend.

Did coffee house at Ellicott & Broadway open? At quick glance this photo looks like that "Burchfield" building.

Most of these ideas are great, I like Waldorf Lunch/Howard's Shoes area and also the University Heights idea...There really isnt a great coffee shop in that area.. How about the corner of Bryant and Elmwood where KFC will be knocked down..If they stay true to the curb appeal and exterior of the frnachise it would be great, I could also envision an irish pub next door with the same facade

How about the old Grever's Flower Shop building right across from the Hyatt? It looks a lot like the exterior of this building in the picture. Great location, great building.
