Cocktail Classes at Sample

This month's class provided students with a tutorial for three different cocktails, all of which were just lovely. The first was a punch featuring blood orange juice and vodka, another was a papaya margarita served with a chip of peanut and cumin brittle. Yum!
The simplest drink, and perhaps the most seasonally appropriate was a simple mulled cider, perfect for the upcoming holidays or any winter event where the host is interested in serving a signature cocktail to guests. The recipe follows.
SAMPLE's cocktail classes are taught by Patrick Wade, an enthusiastic mixologist. The next class is being offered on Wednesday, November 21 at 6pm. For only $20, participants will receive recipes, trade secrets and samples of the classic Cosmo (this one integrates cranberry sauce), an Autumn Martini flavored with pear and a Pomegranate Cocktail. A nice selection of hors d'oeuvres is also available and lends to the festive atmosphere of the class.
The hour-long session is fun, and a great way to begin a date or spend a happy hour. Classes fill up quickly, so call and make your reservations today. SAMPLE's Cocktail Classes run the third Wednesday of every month, so clear your calendars.
Stay tuned to YUM; we're proud to announce that we'll be offering a regular feature with Patrick, who'll demonstrate tips and techniques for preparing simple, modern cocktails.

Before returning to Buffalo, I often wondered what new additions I had missed in our city’s restaurant and bar scene. So highly recommended by many of my closest friends, Jimmy’s on Elmwood, the old Buffalo Barbeque and Brew, was on the top of my to-do bar bite restaurant list.
It has recently been taken over by Jimmy Hambridge, who has been involved with the establishment since it’s opening as the Brew in October of 2006, actually a day before that horrible storm. The Ji …
It should come as no surprise to YUM readers, that I have a passion for spices. You can expect to find me foraging through the city’s ethnic markets, hunting for treasures with which to restock my spice cabinet. The more exotic the spices, the more excited I am to try them. And excited is exactly the way I felt when I first discovered zatar.
Not to be confused with Za’atar (which is a sort of hybrid of thyme-marjoram-oregano), zatar is a traditional Middle Eastern aromatic …
If you’re craving something sweet, you’ve picked the right time to do it. Starting on Monday, June 23rd, Choco-Logo Confectionery Design will be kicking off its annual summer sale. Choco-Logo, whose name is modeled after “Coca Cola,” was, up until recently, the only chocolate factory shop in downtown Buffalo that had captured the attention of people from all over Western New York.
Specializing in corporate gifts, custom logo chocolates and private label products, Choco- …
Italian restaurants are much loved here in Western New York. People from all walks of life and ethnic backgrounds cherish the hearty, homestyle flavors of this Mediterranean cuisine. However, for the large group of immigrant and first-generation Italians here in Buffalo, several of the local Italian restaurants miss the mark.
With a mother from Calabria (southern Italy) and some training in the culinary arts, I fall into this category of disenchanted Italians yearning for tru …

Okay, anyone that can purchase whatever crappy flavoured whiskey that happens to be trendy that month might make a manhattan worthy of sarah jessica parker and the girls of the city...But when a man or sophisticate woman wants a true drink in the proper old fashioned way me thinks that there may be better saloons to wet the whistle..

I enjoy reading these comments about the bartenders and concepts that sample have to offer. Just to voice my opinion, I am a regular customer there and just sitting at the bar and watching them make drinks, unless the prescription on your glasses are bad you can see that everything they mix into the drinks is made in the kitchen (which is behind the bar…again not sure if your glasses are bad). All of the ingredients are either boiled down, or puréed. There is nothing artificial mixed in. Additionally, the bartenders are good guys, and they are over the age of 5 so if you have an opinion, or idea, maybe you should let them know, rather than posting your gripes on the internet. As for flavored whisky, what would a sophisticated person, such as yourself be drinking that for? I guess maybe I’m not old-fashioned enough for you but I think the concept, and mixology going on at Sample is great for Allentown. And if you want to drink your Rob Roy’s made by a 70 year old man, try one of the local Country Clubs.
