Cobblestone KAN JAM

If you're anything like Steel, then the sight of a gigantic empty parking lot can be torturous. Especially when the lot is located in a district that was once home to many period structures. In recent years we have seen developers the likes of Savarino and Obletz/Jacobs converting the remaining buildings into constructive reuses. Now we find both restaurants and residential making a comeback. But where does that leave the sea of parking lots when the HSBC Arena is empty? Can you say KAN JAM*?
This past Friday evening Morrissey's Irish Pub hosted a KAN JAM tournament on its neighboring parking lot. For the first time in a long time, the entire area was busy with activity. The front patio was packed with customers, Frisbee players were tossing on the lot, stunt motorcycle riders were pulling wheelies (see story) towards the back of the lot and workers were busy erecting the casino in the background.
I talked to a couple of KAN Jam players who told me that the Irish Pub has been hosting the KAN JAM tournaments, and all one needed to do was call and sign up to get his or her name listed on the tournament roster. The pub even sets up a hotdog stand out on the sidewalk to keep players nourished. And one step inside Morrissey's is all that it takes to wind up with a cold brew in one's hand.

*Kan-Jam is a fast-paced, interactive team game that is easy to learn and fun to play. You've heard of Ultimate Frisbee and Frisbee Golf, but Kan-Jam is is truly the ultimate frisbee game! This frisbee game consists of two target goals and a colorful flying disk. Four players, divided into teams of two, take turns throwing and deflecting the frisbee as they try to score points by hitting or entering the goal. The first team to score 21 points wins the game, unless a player throws a hugely popular "Instant Win".

It’s really a shame if you missed the reading series “Poetry at the Tea House” that took place at Tru-Teas! during this past year. Luckily, Trudy Stern didn’t want anyone to miss out and teamed up with Michael Morgulis to produce an incredibly fine, unbound book entitled “Tea Leaves” to commemorate the readings and spread the work of the local poets who partook in the program.
In honor of the publication of this special edition portfolio, Morgulis and Stern are hostin …
I think that I would like to start off this post by commending the three Common Council members who were bold enough to ask for today's bizarre Waterfront Village decision to be tabled. David Franczyk, Mickey Kearns and Mike LoCurto all stuck to their guns when it came to holding off on making any hasty (and potentially tragic) decisions regarding our waterfront. Unfortunately, their headstrong stance was outweighed by the rest of the BURA committee, and the rumors are flying as t …
A development team has been selected for a vacant commercial site in Waterfront Village. Finally. The Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency this morning named Specialty Restaurants Incorporation as preferred developer for the prime 1.4 acre parcel at 10-15 LaRiviere Drive. The owner of the adjacent Shanghai Red’s restaurant is proposing an uninspired, four-story, 100 room Wingate Inn.

Kudos to Morrissey's! What a great, creative way to breathe life into a district that is desolate outside of sporting events. It is this type of ingenuity that allows for the rebirth of forgotten neighborhoods.
It is a shame that so much of the Cobblestone District has been razed...razed for nothing. Looking at the conversion of the Mississippi Block by Savarino and Avalon gives hope to that area, yet simultaneously portraying the sobering reality of how limited the redevelopment of the Cobblestone District is without further adaptive reuse opportunities.

Love Kan Jam, great idea. I remember playing it at Sunset 6 years ago, and it was so new people wear throwing their trash into the can while we were playing! They had no idea what it was.
