Chris' NY Sandwich Co.

On any given weekday, you may have to wait 10 minutes or so for your order at Chris’ Sandwich Co. (if you didn’t have the foresight to call it in), but if you can put aside the lack of elbow room and the friendly but hurried staff, the delay is rather entertaining. The menu board is a good read, huge and full of tantalizing descriptions: “…garnished w/ toasted pine nuts and our homemade creamy basil vinaigrette dressing…” “…sirloin topped w/ sautéed spinach…” or “…melted Fontinella cheese and Jamaican Jerk seasoning…”. The only difficulty is that once you’ve placed your order, you stand there reading the board, wondering if you’ve ordered too hastily or if it’s too late to ask them to throw a cup of the homemade chicken soup in.
If you’re with a companion, or even just a newspaper, step to the left through the small door and you can be seated in the dining room, buzzing with conversation; high-ceilinged and full of plants, colorful art and sunlight.
It’s a little hodge-podge, but three major expansions in 15 years will do that. And from the looks of the lunch crowd, another one wouldn’t hurt. Dining capacity at Chris’ NY Sandwich Company is around 75, but in the spring when the weather warms and the sidewalk patio opens, they’ll have room for closer to 100.
WNY native Chris Vendetti began selling sandwiches floor to floor at Children’s Hospital close to 20 years ago. Business grew so swiftly, that he was forced to rent a small space with a kitchen in order to prepare the number of sandwiches he was selling every day. It wasn’t much later that he opened the door to people looking for take out. He offered only ham, turkey and tuna sandwiches. Simple, but very fresh and very, well—large.
“Why the NY Sandwich Co.?” I ask. “I wanted people to understand the size of the sandwiches we were serving, the reference to NY helps people get that,” Chris tells me. And they are more than worthy of the title, stacked with high-quality meats, cheeses, veggies and condiments. The menu is no longer just turkey, ham and tuna. On my count (not including specials) there are 32 sandwiches, 14 salads, and a handful of sides as well as steak, burgers and fish fry on Fridays.

It's great to see stylish, hip, new restaurants pop up downtown such as Sea Bar on Ellicott Street, which specializes in contemporary Japanese food. A clean ultra-modern space, Sea Bar’s dining room is quaint and inviting. The sleek sushi bar has counter seating and the wet bar, with beer, sake, and wine, has at least 10 sakes to choose from on any given night. We were happy to try a Sojitio, a sake mojito, which had the right amount of mint without too much sweetness.

Ten years ago, the downtown of My Fair City was forever altered when a Big Dinosaur appeared on the scene. Thankfully—unlike 1950’s Tokyo—when this dino showed up our downtown wasn’t flattened, but considerably improved. Dinosaur Bar B Que, a restaurant that originated in downtown Syracuse in the 1980’s, planted its foot in downtown Rochester in 1998. It was an instant hit—it’s common to have a line waiting to get in at all times. And it’s clearly Hog Heaven— …
Cecelia’s Ristorante & Martini Bar is prepared to guide their guests through the tastes of fall with their brand new fall menu. Although it is getting a bit too cold for the patio, the hardy food inside will warm things right up.
I started out with the Harvest Salad ($8) and the “Lumpy” Crab Cakes ($9). The Harvest Salad was served with a rosemary citrus vinaigrette, and topped with apricots, beets, pine nuts, walnuts, dried cranberries, and other assorted dried fruits. …
One of the perks my daughter's friends enjoy about a sleepover at my home (other than rearranging the furniture for movie time) are the crepes I serve our guests in the morning.
I can remember sleepover breakfasts from when I was a kid that consisted of potato chips and soda from the night before. If the lack of sleep didn't make us dizzy and irritable enough, the fat, salt and sugar we ingested in the morning would make sure the entire day would be counted for lost. Ugh.

Home to, in my humble opinion, the most delicious portobello sandwich in the City of Buffalo. If you're a mushroom fan and you haven't tried it yet, get a move on!

I read the story about Chris' NY Sandwich Co. in the hard copy version of Buffalo Rising n and my mouth watered after reading about their salads. I think one of the salads that was mentioned is pictured above. Am I correct? To my dismay I couldn't venture downtown that day because it was the weekend, but next time I am home I'm there!

Good news about jury duty - last week I had lunch from Chris' compliments of Erie County. Not bad, eh? I had a fabulous veggie sandwich. And we reached a verdict after lunch.
