C Howard's Violet Mints

I personally really enjoy sweets flavored with the essence of flowers. My baking repertoire includes a number of recipes that call for violet essence, dried lavender, orange blossom water and rosewater. I completely understand those that are turned off by the idea, but I can also be sure that they’ve never had a piece of rich dark chocolate cake with violet buttercream.
I love these little violet flavored “mints” made by C Howard, Co. I find it funny that my extension of an offer of one of these little bad boys often results in a sneer. It seems that people either love them or hate them.
I first “discovered” these delicate little squares when I moved to Buffalo almost 15 years ago. They reminded me of something that one of Anne Rice’s characters would have enjoyed (I know- that vampire stuff is sooo 80s!).
These “mints” are not minty at all, but are instead sweet with subtle, perfume-y undertones. My best friend loves the gum version because it reminds her of a childhood favorite called Sen-Sen, an item I’m not familiar with.
C Howard’s also produces a hard to find lemon flavored “mint” as well as a more traditional spearmint and peppermint- two flavors which I have never seen.
I think part of the fun of this confection is trying to find it. It seems that every time I find a store that carries them, they never get them again. When I do spot them, I buy as many as I can. I also like to throw them into packages headed out west. They’re made near NYC, and I’ve never met a mid-westerner or a west-coaster that has had them before.
Currently I pick them up at the corner of Hertel and Delaware at the Bella-Mia Chocolate Shop. I’ve been able to find them on every occasion that I’ve visited in the last year or so. They also carry the similarly flavored gum.
Bella Mia also offers an ice cream fountain and an outrageous assortment of penny candy, retro candy (Valo Milk, Gold Rush Gum, Squirrel Nut Zippers, BB Bats, Garbage Pail Kids playing cards, Sky Bars, etc.) and Canadian candy (Caramilk, Aero, Coffee Crisp, Mr. Big, etc.).
It is really a must to drop in and pick up a sweet or two at this time of year. Who wouldn’t like a little retro love in their Easter basket?

You know how sometimes you have a conversation with someone and come away with the impression that things are good, and everything is as it should be? After I spoke with the Cichocki Brothers at Camellia Foods, a 3rd generation Polish Sausage and Ham producer in Buffalo, I came away knowing that at the center of everything they do is Family Tradition—as it should be.
The Cichocki brothers, Peter, Patrick and Eric, are at the helm of their Grandfather Edmund’s business that h …
Last month, when I asked readers to list five places they couldn’t live without, several folks mentioned Amy’s Place. A few of them specifically recommended the Margie Meal. So it was with great anticipation that I recently made my first visit to this very cool establishment. Why it took me so long to try this place, I’ll never know. Suffice to say that I’m already looking forward to my next meal there.
I liked the vibe right away when I noticed a sign on the wall that sa …
A muse is intended to inspire, and this restaurant certainly will encourage one's own imagination. Playful dishes blur the suggested lines between modern and classic, sweet and savory, and the even the line between food and art.
A beautiful complement to one of our city’s greatest treasures, Muse at the Albright-Knox, is a perfect start or end to a day of stirring your senses. Sophisticated and subtle, the ambience of Muse’s space fits the Albright well--modern yet invit …
On a recent summer afternoon I had the pleasure of meeting with one of Buffalo’s leading chefs, Jennifer Boye. My visit with Jennifer took place in the Fireside Salon of The Mansion on Delaware Avenue where she is currently the Executive Chef for special events.
During our conversation I learned that Chef Boye, who is Buffalo born and raised, began her career in 1997. After graduating from the Erie Community Collage Culinary Arts Department she started working for one of her i …

Great post--totally vintage. My mother loves these and you can pick them up at Vidler's if you're in the neighborhood. Every time I've been there, the Violets are in stock so enough people must like them.

You can buy all flavors of the mints and gum directly from the company: http://www.chowardcompany.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=OS&Product_Code=03600&Category_Code=
If anyone finds Sen-Sen, I hope they let us know. I haven't had a chance to look yet. Remember the large size of sen-sen like candy that you could buy; the last time I saw them was at Tops, in the bulk food, years ago. There was also a lavender variety. They were sorta cube-like, like a smaller computer keyboard key, and were joined together in strips that you broke apart.

For the fans of the sweet and floral, I just got this week's menu from The Coda restaurant. Besides reading like a sonnet and detailing some marvelous offerings, the dessert menu lists the following item:
Rosewater Chocolate Cake – Lavender-Cointreau Ice Cream......$6
Roo also offers some of the best coffee in the city- it sounds like a visit might be in order! For a look at the complete menu, got to www.the-coda.com.
Happy Eating!

They sell these at the tiny snack store on the first floor of 1 M&T Plaza downtown. My boss was just eating them the other day and remarking how much she loved them. I didn't know they were so hard to find!

A few years ago, my sister actually found Sen-Sen someplace in Florida and sent a pack to me. They were just what I remembered - tiny square things (smaller than a saccharine pill) with a highly concentrated licorice flavour. I'll have to ask her if she can still find them.

I used those mints (and the C Howards gum) exclusively in high school to cover up my beer breath from my parents.
