Central Terminal Student Cleanup

This weekend marks a big pre-spring college and university cleanup at the Central Terminal. This is the second year that local students have volunteered their time to help get the terminal ready for activities. I called Bernadette Majewski (Central Terminal Restoration Corporation) for the terminal and asked her what the response has been like this year... it is Saturday morning after-all:
"I contacted all of the colleges and universities, but unfortunately UB is out on break. We're getting a great response from the Canisius kids though. The general cleanup is in May but we wanted the terminal clean for Dyngus Day. Last year UB showed up with a big turnout… and members of D'Youville showed along with somebody from Hilbert and Medaille. A lot of these students show up on their own efforts. Last year we had a group of Asian girls from a UB sorority who showed up and they were not even looking for credit. It's a love of the building and a love for the community that motivates many of the students. These kids just want to help and that is admirable.
"This is the second year that we ran this student cleanup... last year we had upwards of fifty students show up. The schools have been very helpful getting the word out. We get donations of food, coffee and water. A lot of them just leave afterwards without eating. They give us their names and tell us to call them if we need more help. We take everybody who wants to help... just remember it's cold inside. We do have a building committee that goes in during the winter... when workers are volunteering all winter long then there are things that need to be cleaned afterwards."
*The clean up will take place on Saturday, March 15 from 9am to 1pm. Individuals are encouraged to dress warm and to bring gloves and cleaning items, if available. A light lunch will be served.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Bernadette at 716-812-3342.

I think that I would like to start off this post by commending the three Common Council members who were bold enough to ask for today's bizarre Waterfront Village decision to be tabled. David Franczyk, Mickey Kearns and Mike LoCurto all stuck to their guns when it came to holding off on making any hasty (and potentially tragic) decisions regarding our waterfront. Unfortunately, their headstrong stance was outweighed by the rest of the BURA committee, and the rumors are flying as t …
A development team has been selected for a vacant commercial site in Waterfront Village. Finally. The Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency this morning named Specialty Restaurants Incorporation as preferred developer for the prime 1.4 acre parcel at 10-15 LaRiviere Drive. The owner of the adjacent Shanghai Red’s restaurant is proposing an uninspired, four-story, 100 room Wingate Inn.
Blog culture is becoming more and more respectable with each passing day. Though it remains a profession where it can be hard to earn a living, it is still a way for amateurs to spread their opinions and share with their readers specific interests. Chris Hawley has taken his passion and created a blog with it dedicated to the Hydraulics. The Hydraulics is Buffalo’s oldest manufacturing district and Hawley wants to uncover everything about this industrial site, from the people, t …
It’s hard to believe it, but my grandmother is only slightly older than Mickey Mouse. She would have been just four years old when Mickey came to life for the first time on November 18, 1928 in Steamboat Willie. His first film had no sound, was black and white, and premiered in New York City, but from a humble beginning, the singing, dancing mouse has gone on to literally change the face of the world and cartoons as we know them.
It’s not every day you turn 80 and though he†…

When is "Dirty Jobs" with Mike Rowe cleaning out the tower? Has that been done already and when will the show be on tv? Anyone know?

flyguy I think that's a hell of an idea, especially since I don't remember any Dirty Jobs being with "volunteer jobs." It could be an entire episode.

Flyguy, I haven't heard of that program and we haven't discussed it, so it won't be on TV anytime soon!

Is the cleanup more or less taking place outside of the terminal? I would figure by now the upper floors must be empty and that atrium is probably cleaned after each use.

"Dirty Jobs" with Mike Rowe airs on the Discovery Channel. For instance, last season they aired an episode about RC Farms in Vegas, showcasing the owner of a pig farm that takes all the food scraps from the hotels and restaurants which the pigs do a fine job of ...er ...recycling.

No, the clean up is indoors. The concourse is cleaned up after each event, but there have been a lot of projects going on this winter, so I'm sure it will need a going over before Dyngus Day. There will be some event set up for Dyngus Day also.

I heard rumor that the tower (indoors) would be cleaned out at least partially in a Dirty Jobs episode and im trying to get the info on this because i gotta see it if it happens. I cant seem to find any proof of it but its a good idea and will get the building some exposure. This is the same reason I hoped Ghost Hunters on SciFi would visit Buffalo and head to the Richardson Complex but it doesnt appear they want any piece of such exposure.

Men, this is a good opportunity to get out your tool belts bring your sons and show then how to be handy and volunteer.
The Central Terminal and the railroads were built by real men! The people that are redeveloping are men.
This is a great cause but Mr. Miller can you inform us what the projects were this winter?
What the priorities for 2008 are (Mail & Baggage Building, Tower, Cocktail Lounge and Restaurant)?

The projects we've been working on this winter are:
- BOCES has been helping us build a small house within the waiting room that will house 6 toilets (3 Men, 3 Women).
- The building crew has been working on removing some more loose wire mesh and plaster from sections of the restaurant area.
We're currently in the process of researching grants that will allow us to do some necessary repointing on the tower, as well as to begin sealing the baggage building. Both of these efforts are currently beyond our budget and will run in the hundreds of thousands of dollars to complete.

Flyguy, it's just a rumor, trust me, I would know.
We do have high school volunteers, but we ask for a parent/guardian to accompany minors though. We just didn't have enough time to recruit in all the area's high schools. All are welcome!
