Central Terminal On Route 66

Here's a five minute clip of the way the Central Terminal was, inside and outside, in 1963 on the old TV show Route 66.
This find was completely by accident. Back in the fall of 1963, CBS filmed a couple of scenes in Buffalo and Niagara Falls. My Dad and I were extras in a scene that had us walking on the sidewalk in front of City Hall in Niagara Falls. I was only five years old at the time, but I vividly remember having to walk back and forth a few times until they got a final take.
That episode was scheduled to air in November of 1964, but was preempted by the assassination of JFK. It did reair, but we never saw it and I thought my 15 minutes of fame was lost forever.
Over the last couple years, I've looked for the DVD version of Route 66 and finally found it last year. It was only when I mentioned it to one of the guys at the terminal who's around my age, that I found out that the terminal was also shot in scenes that year! So, I frantically searched through each episode until I found it, had it downloaded and here is the result:
There is sound, but you need to turn up the volume on your computer to hear it. It's so nice to see an undamaged exterior and interior, complete with lamps and cocktail bar!

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

This only adds to the mystery surrounding the Kennedy Assasination. Could Oswald have been paid off by rival networks, knowing that the death of that pill-popping Beantown president would pre-empt a popular TV show? The implications are enormous as it's already believed that the Bay Of Pigs invasion was staged to put pressure on "Mister Ed" during a particularly nasty and competitive fall season. It's believed that Paddy Chayevsky took many of these secrets to his grave. An envelope that he supposedly sent to Jimmy Breslin has also never been found. C.I.A.? Or Gig Young?

Fun to see. I was in the terminal when it was still open (I think 1978; possibly the year it closed). When this episode was filmed, the terminal was 35 years old. That was 45 years ago. Who knows? Perhaps sky high gas prices and high speed tracks will reinvent the railroads in decades to come. Kudos to all those keeping the place alive these days.
