California's Loss Is Buffalo's Gain.

California's Loss Is Buffalo's Gain.

Story Options

It's not often that you read an article devoted to a Buffalo sports player's love for his hometown. There's a recent article in USA Today, written by Scott Pitoniak, Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, that talks about J.P. Losman's love of his adopted hometown. The quarterback even makes mention of his 19th century Victorian mansion, and his fondness for the city's diverse neighborhoods:

"It might sound as if Losman is being paid by the local Chamber of Commerce to spout these niceties, but he is not. His words are sincere. The city really has won him over. So much so that the guy from Venice, Calif., with the surfer-dude, mussed-up hair and flip-flops now calls Buffalo home year-round — something few quarterbacks have done in the post-Jim Kelly era."

The interview took place on the waterfront at Shanghai Reds, where Losman pointed out the sailboats on the water. He also touched upon his desire to see the "underrated" city clean up its act, and made mention of his 'Buffalo Lives' program that launched a couple weeks back at Nietzsche's on Allen. It sounds as if J.P. has caught the grassroots bug, which has begun to sweep the city. In the article he says:

"I wouldn't have put down roots if I wasn't confident this was going to work out. I want this to be the season when everyone around here says, 'There's no doubt this is our guy. He wants to be here and we want him to be here.' "

We've had our share of sport personalities bash our city in the past. Now it looks as if we have a guy who wants to champion the city... let's hope in more ways than one.

All nice and good. Friends on Oakland Place love him, he is a great neighbor, no doubt and a friend of the city vs. suburbs, But can he win?

My band was one of those performing at JP's Buffalo Lives event at Nietzsche's, he personally invited, thanked, stood up front for and hung with the two bands from Buffalo and one from California. He feels as strong for the local music scene as he does for Buffalo. The guy is a real class act. I hope the Bills do well this season because it would be a great loss to Buffalo for JP to be traded elsewhere!

Ok, no more negative comments about him out of my mouth. Lets give him the love he gives us. Maybe its just he needs to feel the love and confidence of his city behind him to give him the confidence to perform.

JP has been picked as one player to break out this year. Remember last year was his first full year being the starter. Broke his leg rookie year, then played behind Kelly.

Artvoice also had another good article about him recently, talking about Buffalo Lives (buffalolives.com). I couldnt believe this was our QB speaking.

We should give him a break and remember, off the field performance is sometimes just as important as on field performance.

Who would you rather have right here right now - JP on a learning curve and a great pro-Buffalo attitude, or Rob Johnson, surfer boy from Cali who never said anything positive about WNY?

How can you not love the fact that this guy dove right into the community? He's had some struggles in his first few years (but what young NFL QB doesn't?) but his numbers trend in the right direction. I think he'll have a great year and hopefully secures a long-term extension along w/ Evans. Two young guys the community can be proud of.

I think this guy is great. He'll be a sleeper for fantasy football. What sucks is the day he was doing his Nietzche thing, it was over seen by Drury and Briere leaving. But still gotta respect what he's doing for the city.

Losman needs help on the field, and it should come in the form of Marshawn Lynch another California guy. I saw him play for Cal in Berkeley last season, and, even though he is young, he is fast, fast, fast. We Bills fans always hope for the best don't we?

He will be great marketing for other sports heroes to move into the city. While his team mates are living in their plastic sided McMansions out in the hinter lands he will be living in style with a real mansion. They will notice the difference.

most bisons and a respectable amount of sabres reside in the city since they play there...which explains why i dont know of any bills other than losman who dont live in the southtowns. people say that a downtown stadium wouldn't do anything for downtown outside of 10 games a year but i guarantee that at least a couple dozen members of the bills organization would live in the city if it made life more convenient for them.

Marshawn Lynch is a bit of a punk though...he was caught bringing in a bottle of Henesy at SoHo because they dont serve it there and subsequently tossed out of the bar... Thats straight up GHETTO

do not use the term "ghetto". It has no place in this discussion. Lynch never got into any trouble when he attended Cal. He was well-respected in Berkeley. He is far away from being a punk.

Regarding a downtown stadium... Age old debate... I know, I know, once Rich/Ralph was built. I think they should move it downtown for a number of reasons or retrofit Pilot Field.

It may be only 10 weeks (if they do training camp there, it turns it into 24 weeks with more than one day per week). This would provide a tourist attraction for people (from Syracuse, Erie, Toronto, Rochester) to sample downtown Buffalo and experience all of the great things it has to offer, as written about endlessly on this site. If Buffalo is so great, why not use popular culture to help show it off.

National exposue. Sorry but the NFL is the greatest marketing vehicle known in today's pop culture. Buffalo is lucky to have participation in this, being a small market and Green Bay bent over backwards to keep the Packers playing in that town. What is Green Bay Wisconson known for anyway? The Sabres, as much as I love them, are not the Bills, as the NHL is not the NFL when it comes to national and international attentention. CBS, FOX, NBC and ESPN as well as ABC pay the NFL ungoddly amounts of money and stake their broadcast finances on having the NFL on thier airwaves, simply to promote other programs, they make very little money when all is said and done. Municipalities should take a page from busieness and invest in a loss leader to promote more profitable endeavors. Again, use the biggest marketing asset and exploit it.

Marketing opportunities for the city to exploit and benefit from.

Shops, restaurants and other creative ways to spread the stadium's appeal.

Baltimore, San Francisco, Denver, Detroit, Cincinatti, Cleveland, Pittsburgh (note all are rust belt cities except for Denver and SF) all learned from the benefit from having downtown stadiums, all have turned around or are in the process of (Detroit).

The fact is, the NFL is imbedded in our pop culture. The Bills are as much a part of the national culture as chicken wings (thank you Theresa). The NFL is the most powerful cartel in sports. Why Buffalo still has a team is a mystery to me but it does and the city and people should do everything to improve not only the Bills but use the Bills as a way to market the city. If Buffalo looses the Bills, it has lost a golden marketing opportunity. The NHL and Sabres may be in voyue in Buffalo but the NFL is the golden goose... Buffalo is damn lucky to have it (thank you Ralph Wilson!)

With smart marketing (Kraft family, who tried to get the stadium in Boston, but failed, and has now turned it into a tourist destination in Foxboro, similar distance to OP) the stadium can be a year round facilitiy. I for one, love the idea of retrofitting Pilot Field and creating a state of the art training facility for Bills training camp adjacent to the park. Figure out a way where the Bills and Bisons can coexist and we have a great use of land, tourist attraction(s), marketing opportunity for the entire city, sampling opportunities for the entire city from the region, national exposure, possibility of income tax from players, property tax from teams, corporate tax from the teams, possibility of more high income players moving into the city (maybe a reach but who knows) not to mention a damn good statement for the city.

Oh, one more thing, Rich Stadium was built during a time of urban blight. The 1970's were a time when people were running from cities in fear. This is reversed now and it might be time to strike.

The suburban UB was built upon a land deal with connected state Senators who owned the land sold to the State. Rich was built in Orchard Park due to the fear that people would not go to the Rockpile. All of that changed with Pete Rozelle and his network deals and revenue sharing (which Ralph Wilson participated actively)...

People can mock Ralph all they want but he truly is one of the leaders who created the NFL system and it was designed to protect teams like Buffalo, Oakland, Cincinatti, Green Bay, etc. He and Pete Rozelle were visionaries (even though it is essentially a cartel, but Buffalo benifits more from it).

Finally, Buffalo is better with the Bills than without them.

ok, ok. here we go again on the stadium. so here it is, why i believe a stadium is a good investment for Buffalo:

players, coaches, staff, visiting teams, and their out of town fans all generate income for the local economy. bars and restaurants cash in at gametime. well designed stadiums brings national attention. and lets face it, the bills wont stay here if they dont get a new stadium.

so lets get on it. we can and should combine it with a convention center - which we need and then we can demolish that urban travesty that currently blocks our streets and kills small business. it needs direct lightrail access so we can sell out games with carless college kids. it should be on the lake for great views, quirky winds, and boat based tailgating. i know what they say, 8 home games, then what? well, conventions, concerts, soccer, rugby, boat shows, college games. . .

id rather have a stadium any day over that stupid neighborhood killing peace bridge. id bet it would pay off more as well.

    forgive the appendix:

if we loose the bills because we dont build a stadium, we will be judged across the country. i assure you, NOBODY knows about the peace bridge. EVERYONE will know if we loose the BIlls. nationally, the last home game might as well be our last rites, and we will be back to the sterotypes of the blizzard of 77 and closed steel mills.

Id go the other way and say, whats with SoHo not having Hennessy?? Esp since Im guessing its a trendy kinda place?! I dont go there, so I wouldn't know its really not my style ..

Jeez, dude, Im about to start bringing my own Wild Turkey into bars (well maybe not, Im not an NFL star, so Ill just pre-game in the parking lot!) cause it seems way too many places don't even have it.. and thats like not having Jack Daniels.

I cant believe we get good news about our quarterback and here that he is trying to good things in Buffalo and yet we still see comments like "Losman sucks". Grow up! The article had nothing to do with his playing abilities and frankly I think a guy klike that could get our city some good national exposure and hopefully shut down McGhahee's comments from his Toronto interview. I think Losman will prove himself to not be ajust a good quarterback but a great quarterback for th Bills. Lets not forget Losman had a pretty bad line protecting him and defenses were always up in his face. As a young quarterback I think most would get a bit gun shy of getting sacked or brought down fairly regularly and yes even throw a few balls a bit too far, etc. With a line this guy is gonna shine and he likes our town!

"On January 25, 2007, Lynch was accused of sexual assault by his former girlfriend. The incident reportedly happened on December 13, 2006, outside the woman's home in Emeryville, California. On January 29, 2007, an Alameda County Deputy District Attorney who specializes in domestic violence cases declined to press charges, citing a lack of evidence and "grave inconsistencies" in the alleged victim's accusations.[8] Lynch was never arrested or charged.

On March 3, 2007, an Alameda County judge threw out a restraining order that Lynch's ex-girlfriend had issued against him, due to the fact that it was obtained improperly."
