This Wednesday, November 14th from 6-10pm Buffalo First is hosting its Second Annual Buy Buffalo Bash. This is an opportunity for you to get into the local groove... to mix it up with people behind the businesses that are contributing to the region's comeback. Last year this party was a big success thanks to the grassroots spirit that drives the local economy. It's a wake up call of sorts to tune into the efforts being made by those who understand and appreciate the buck that stops here in Buffalo.

The Buy Buffalo Bash is also the celebration that launches Buy Buffalo Week. From the 17th to the 24th organizers are asking shoppers to reconsider where it is that their money is going. Thinking about making an online purchase? Take the time to learn about the local alternatives before sending your cash out-of-town. Gearing up for the holidays? Make a concerted effort to support the commercial enterprises that call Buffalo home. Take a stroll down the commercial shopping districts and become familiar with the merchants in you neighborhood. Or try the next neighborhood to see what it has to offer.

I drove down Main Street from Buffalo to Akron on Saturday afternoon, and I was amazed at the number of vacant commercial buildings that are up for lease and sale along that stretch of roadway. It was easily 50 - 75 buildings that were no longer occupied by businesses in a 20 mile stretch. I was curious, so I took a drive through Cheektowaga, along Dick Road and Union Road and found the same thing, probably 20 vacant storefronts and another 30 - 40 office buildings with lease or sale signs. I am taking a trip to Orchard Park / Hamburg to count the vacancies sometime this week. I was under the impression that these areas were doing great when compared to Hertel, Delaware, Allen, Elmwood, and Main; but it doesn't appear that this is the case.

I am definitely frequenting more businesses in Buffalo this holiday season, and I will probably venture out to Williamsville, Cheektowaga, Tonawanda, or other suburbs to frequent some of the small businesses that are struggling there as well. This will be a Buffalo Bought Holiday for me, I am going to see if I buy for all the friends, employees, nieces, and nephews without hitting the Malls, Best Buy, or Borders this season.

This is a great idea and an excellent way to promote local businesses. I am all about buying local to begin with...and have you seen the Galleria? Yikes! Not that I am upset with Canadians for contributing to our economy because that's fine, but finding gifts amongst that is not my idea of fun holiday shopping. It's easy to see how people are lured into buying online. I've done it myself. But, whenever possible, I head over to Elmwood and other local shops to find wonderful Buffalo treasures and one-of-a-kinds!

Can you shop at this bash or is it just a kick off party for the week? If you can shop at it, what stores will be there?

I have vowed not to step one foot in the galleria this holiday season. I've always hated putting up with the crowds there, but after a recent trip there (after being out of town for 3+ years) I was amazed how much of a cluster f this place has become with the recent expansion. They keep expanding the mall itself, and the walkways stay the same size. That along with the parking being a complete nightmare is all I need to stay away for good.

My mom told me that she went to the Galleria on Monday and that it was already atrocious. I've also vowed this to be a Buffalo Bought Christmas for me. I've even persuaded my two teenage sisters (who are about as mall-additcted as girls can get) into at least buying some of their gifts from stores in the city. It might cost me a few extra hot chocolates and other girly latte things, but I'm convinced I can get them hooked on Elmwood just as easily as they're obsessed with American Eagle, Aero or Hollister

Last year, I vowed to shop only in Buffalo (because I HATE the crowds at the mall and I live in Allentown). It was great. I got unique gifts at really reasonable prices for everyone on my list. I definitely spent a lot less than I'd planned to and I got to know a lot of the local offerings. But I was most surprised to see that the stores were PACKED - I mean really really crowded! It seems that this idea is far more popular than you might think. I don't know who all those people are at the mall, but there were hoardes shopping up and down Elmwood Ave. I strongly recommend the adventure to anyone who's tired to the same old Pottery Barn-ish offerings.
