Buffalo's Running Routes: Build the Database

Story Options

A few weeks ago, I wrote about a website for mapping and measuring running routes. It's called mapmyrun.com. After using it for a couple of weeks, I found out the the USATF web site actually has a better version of the same program. Every Sunday I map and post the routes our training group will be running that weekend. Since we've been at the ridge a few times this year, when you go to the site, you'll see accurate measurements of some of the more popular routes out there, like "Cheap Ward" and Gartman Rd. I also have a number of routes that start and finish at the store.

It would be a great service to runners from WNY to have as many routes posted here as possible. In order to make it easy to search for them, I would suggest using Buffalo as the city, even if you are posting a route that is in the suburbs. Imagine how great it would be for runners from outside the area to be able to go to the website and find accurate routes that are near where they are staying.

It's really easy to use, basically just click your mouse along the route and it draws a line on the road and measures the distance. I like this one more because it puts in mile markers. The link below will take you to the list of routes already posted under Buffalo New York. If you want to add additional routes, just click on the map on the right and it will take you to the site. All you have to do is put in a zip code, that will get you in the area you want to map, then just zoom in, until you locate your starting point. If you put in an exact address, it will take you right to that point. Let's see if Buffalo can get more routes posted than anywhere in the country. Hey, you might want to check out http://www.favoriterun.com as well. Its also based on Google Maps like the other two you mentioned, but has more features such as editable routes, pictures of routes, and saving the routes to your profile.
