BuffalObama'08 Opens Office

Democrats in the WNY area have a cause to celebrate this Saturday, September 13th. The local Obama delegation has found a Buffalo office and is hosting a grand opening celebration. The new office is located at 3258 Main Street in the heart of the University Heights district. Interested parties can take part in the celebration and check out the open house from Noon until 4 PM
“Yes We Can” is the theme for the opening of the BuffalObama’08 office and Obama bumper stickers, buttons, and other campaign products will be given out. The office is easy to find for those in the city, but should be as easy for those coming in from the suburbs. If an undecided voter happens to come out to the open house, the delegation will be providing position papers and other information on the Senator to help them learn more and make an educated decision.
Whether you are pro-Obama or pro-McCain, one of the things both sides herald is voting and its importance to society. The Obama supporters will have voter registration drives throughout the area and in battle ground states, but will also have voter registration forms and absentee ballot request forms at their location. The delegation is even planning trips to Pennsylvania and Ohio during the fall campaign to spread the word about Obama and to get people interested in voting.
Local delegates who went to the Democratic Convention in Denver will also be at the office this Saturday to share their stories and experiences from August. Interested parties will also have the chance to learn how to volunteer and lend a hand. Currently, the delegation has no website of their own, so visit Senator Obama’s website for more information or call the BuffalObama’08 office directly at 715-5379.

I love how this article is written as politically neutral as possible, and yet--predictably--some people chime in with their idiotic two cents. And Blov, there's an Obama office in practically every larger American city... just as there's a McCain office in practically every larger American city.
Also, is it just me, or does this country still seem completely polarized politically? This campaign, from both sides of the fence, has gotten really ugly. I really wish the public would hear more about the issues, and thereby become more informed about the "change" they want to vote for. Personally, I can't wait for the debates!

I don't question this blackrocklifter. We could also debate who should recieve credit for this, and the factors that went into this particular resurgence of the 90s. Remember, things looked pretty good under Coolidge and the Harding admins as well during the 1920s. My point was that Buffalo and WNY was one of the few places in the nation that didn't see any of this expansion in the 90s. Actually the city and area took major steps backwards. Since everyone seems to be talking about this recent Buffalo Renaissance on this blog, why wouldn't they keep the energy going with the GOP in power?

Yes, and this also led to a huge economic collapse due to the lack of governance and poor policy on behalf of the Clinton adminstration. The mortgage crisis today can be traced back to changing mortgage restrictions and governmance to increase home ownership. The tech boom collapse and enron can be traced back to poor oversight from that administration. Rampant growth of DoD contracts, mostly left unchecked, are a result of Clinton.
I am not supporting Bush, but Clinton was no god of politics if you know what I mean.

kooksapalooza, your first comment asks for one plan of McCain-Palin but here's three:
1. drill here, drill now - increase in America, much more than Obama proposes to do, the drilling of oil and natural gas
2. start adding nuclear plants again, which Obama opposes even though it's proven zero-CO2-emission technology widely used in Europe
3. match everything Obama wants to do for wind power, solar, biofuels, battery-powered cars, and conservation
In short, an "all of the above" approach which in the long run will add supply to world energy markets and counter balance the growing influence of OPEC and Russia
Two more as a bonus:
4. not raise taxes on job-creating "rich" business owners as Obama proposes to do (yes, job-creating small business owners often have $250K+ income, that's the motivation for taking financial risks)
5. promote school vouchers as an optional alternative to public school system monopolies

All this aside, i always get a kick out of both blue collar rust belt democrats and minority democrats. I like asking them both what have the democrats done for you? Never did understand why they follow that party like sheep. Both candidates are getting huge contributions from big business, and therefore will become their lackeys when elected. the nation needs a complete overhaul of how election campaigns are run. The costs for oil exploration have outpaced the cost of oil, so there is no incentive for big oil to drill off the coasts. The fact that they haven't taken advantage of their vast existing oil leases only emphasizes that point. Arctic drilling has been protested by former CIA director, James Woolsey, because the oil pipeline is above ground, much of it through Canada, and has already been subject to attacks. From a national security perspective, this is not the most thoughtful move.
Nuclear power is more costly than existing technologies and there is still no satisfactory repository for nuclear waste. Nuclear power means higher home electrical costs plus nuclear waste. (I'm sure that Buffalo doesn't want more expensive electricity and more waste in its backyard.) The Hanford nuclear facility in Washington State has been a nuclear waste disaster and the Yucca facility in Nevada has continuing resistance by Nevada residents, so where should the waste be stored? France relies on nuclear power but it has had its own nuclear leaks, too. Generation IV nuclear reactors, that would have relatively little dangerous waste, are still in the design stage and won't be ready until 2020. No private equity has made its way to nuclear power in this country even though there are already existing government incentives for it. Nothing has stopped nuclear except people don't want the existing technology in their neighborhoods.
Regarding the economy, I would mention the work of the Concord Coalition, a non-partisan group that has been warning of the consequences of deficit spending for years. Additionally, Nouriel Roubini, the NYU economics professor, who predicted most of the incidents that caused this economic mess, stated a few nights ago on Charlie Rose that he expects average housing value declines to bottom at 40%. What will that do to consumer spending?
Talking about who has an office where, who looks like a stripper, who's not a Muslim, tax cuts, drill-drill-drill mantras, and nuclear silver bullets are meaningless considering the realities of the economy and pending technologies. There are serious issues in this country but, I'm sorry, almost all of the comments posted above are just silly and more of the blame game. How can we ask for more talk of the issues from our politicians when we don't exercise it ourselves?

If you are going to talk about a breath of fresh air and change show me why, give some examples. According to Obamas brief record there is nothing there that is noteworthy as representing sweeping change or new ideas. Just to say that you are for change without actually backing it up really holds no weight. buffalo339 is correct that neither one is a party of fiscal conservatives and small government.
However just because both parties favor big govt and neither party as a whole has a good record for controlling spending, that doesn't mean there's not a difference in degree of how McCain and Obama would try to grow spending. In the senate, one of them has strongly opposed a lot of spending programs and the other hasn't. As candidates, one of them is proposing a lot more new spending programs compared to the other. It doesn't require party labels to figure out which is which.

Paul - You lose credibility when you lump issues like tax policy and energy in with the Muslim and stripper topics: '...who looks like a stripper, who's not a Muslim, tax cuts, drill-drill-drill mantras, and nuclear silver bullets are meaningless'.
Nobody said nuclear is a silver bullet, so that's a lame straw man argument you make. Tax policy is meaningless? Yeah, sure.
If offshore drilling isn't cost-feasible, as you say it isn't, then why not lift all bans on it? If oil cos really won't won't drill offshore, as you say they won't, why have any bans?
Why not allow more offshore drilling as McCain proposes and see what happens eventually? Same with onshore drilling too, in Alaska and other western states. Nobody knows for sure, but these might be important sources in the long term, especially if oil prices rise a lot down the road which might encourage exploration you say is too expensive.
For our economy to keep growing, more energy is needed. Why do many U.S. politicians often demand the Saudis increase their oil production when we're not willing to at least try more drilling here, onshore and offshore?
There's pipelines being built all over the world. Yeah, they're all terrorism threats as you note. So are oil tanker ships, gasoline delivery trucks, petroleum refineries, on and on. Terrorism sucks but things can be repaired and rebuilt if they have to, including pipelines.
Re. nuclear, all the problems you list are potentially workable. Yes we can, or yes we can't? Other nations are using it more than the U.S. There's no reason it couldn't help a lot in the U.S. too - as one piece of the puzzle. There are no silver bullets. Federal legislation can be attempted to make it happen more than it is.

1. Nothing has stopped nuclear plants from being built in the US. All nuclear power problems are potentially workable? Provide details, please. Are you going to build a Generation III plant now that will be obsolete in 2020 when Generation IV technology will be available? In the meantime, where will you store the waste?
2. Lift the ban on off-shore oil drilling. It doesn't begin to solve the problem. Simple conservation techniques would yield more savings than drilling, but that's not a sexy topic.
3. I never said tax policy is meaningless. You put words in my mouth. I'm saying that, considering the dire conditions of the US economy, no candidate is willing to state that tax increases AND spending cuts are required. Unfortunately, no one in this country votes for a politician who says they will have to raise taxes and cut spending.

Paul - 1. China, France, Canada, S Korea, India, Russia, Slovakia, Japan, Argentina, Finland, Taiwan, and Ukraine are all in the process of building new nuclear plants now instead of waiting another 12 years as you say should be done due to obsolescence issues. They obviously disagree with you. Potentially workable could mean using similar approaches to what one or more of those nations do for each problem you listed.
2. Offshore drilling and conservation can both be done. No one thing will solve everything, so it's puzzling why you're tying those two issues together. But it's good you favor lifting the ban. Pelosi and Obama, are you reading this?
3. Tax cuts are part of tax policy, and your 16:50 comment included tax cuts in a list of things you wrote are meaningless, along with a candidate's appearance and religion. Now this time, it looks like you're now saying tax cuts are harmful and taxes should instead be raised, but correct me if I'm interpreting you wrong. That's saying something different than 'meaningless'. We'll disagree whether it's a good idea to raise taxes overall. Tax rate increases don't always increase revenues, and tax rate cuts don't always decrease revenues. There's always unintended consequences of tax rate changes up or dawn, and many interactions with other aspects of economic policy (trade, entitlements, monetary policy, etc.) No doubt spending will grow overall inevitably, but some spending items will be cut. These are all issues that elections affect, a little at a time. They aren't meaningless in the same sense as superficial things about candidates are.
Report this
PaulBuffalo
AtwaterLouse,
1. You didn't answer my question: where will the US store the waste? The Yucca Mountain debate has raged on for decades.
2. Lifting the oil-drilling ban will not introduce additional offshore drilling until oil prices can be stabilized at about $150/barrel because the oil ain't as easy to retrieve. Low oil prices and fluctuating oil prices scare big oil to death and prevents them from exploration. Exxon and its brothers are really financial holding companies now. They're more concerned with their stock price than oil exploration. The real work is done by smaller companies in other countries. There is also a shortage of ships, highly-educated oil drilling labor and infrastructure. Venezuela has seen its production drop significantly because there are not enough oil rigs available. Finally, now that Americans are using less oil, big oil makes less money in the US from oil refining. That's one reason why some oil companies are actually exporting gasoline to Mexico.
Why has McCain consistently supported tax breaks to big oil, but has voted against alternative energy tax breaks? Tax breaks for alternative energy are about to expire soon and Republicans in Congress seem to be ready to vote them down. If alternative energy received the same benefits as big oil, the technology could flourish here as it has in Germany, one of the largest consumers of solar cell technology.
3. I didn't say tax cuts are meaningless. With a trillion-dollar deficit, it's dishonest to tell the American voter that tax cuts will happen. The economic circumstances that the US faces are the most dire since the 1930s. Deficit-neutral spending is crucial for the rest of the world to have faith in US monetary policy; anything less will pull the purse strings and foreign governments will look elsewhere to invest. If you're really into this topic -- and not just the spiel regurgitated by politicians -- I strongly recommend the Concord Coalition. Pete Peterson, a conservative, founded the bipartisan group, and has been railing against deficits and the consequences thereof, for years. These are not normal times and the simple cause-and-effect of tax cuts do not apply.

wow. the ignorance displayed on some of these posts astounds me. Talk about knowing the issues...
1. buffalostan, what you referred to is actually legislation about teaching children how to identify and avoid sexual predators, not "teaching sex to kindergarteners" like the McCain tv commercial tells you. Educate yourself. Or, just keep telling everyone that Obama really wants to hand out condoms to 5 year olds. More info here
2. Drilling here is nothing more than a short-term solution--of which we won't see the benefits for years to come--instead of actually reducing our dependency on oil and investing in alternative green energies. Interesting to note that McCain has long been opposed to offshore drilling up until very recently, when he no doubt realized the American public in general might be ignorant enough to bite on this issue. "With those resources, which would take years to develop, you would only postpone or temporarily relieve our dependency on fossil fuels," McCain said just in May 2008.
a study recently completed by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) which in their Annual Energy Outlook 2007, confirmed this: "The projections in the OCS access case indicate that access to the Pacific, Atlantic, and eastern Gulf regions would not have a significant impact on domestic crude oil and natural gas production or prices before 2030." McCain's drilling history
3. The "job-creating" business owners' tax breaks have done this economy a world of good the past eight years, haven't they? What's our unemployment rate now... just hit 6.1%, the highest since 2003, and is steadily rising. Let's not try anything different, huh? NY Times: Jobless rate
4. For anyone who's been paying attention, there are plenty of things to actually discuss other than "he just talks about change." Funny how the McCain campaign's screams of "inexperience!" quickly changed to... you got it, "change!" as soon as the embarassingly inexperienced and unqualified Palin was added to the ticket. But, when McCain starts saying they're all about change, they must be the ones telling the truth. After all, he's the one who voted against Bush 90% of the time... oh, wait. He voted with Bush all those times. Hmmm. That's some maverick.
But for those who need it spelled out, here's a few things Obama has planned to make a change: - the already-mentioned tax cuts for majority of Americans (95%) - "stop giving tax breaks to companies that ship jobs overseas...start giving them to companies that create good jobs right here in America." - "eliminate capital gains taxes for the small businesses and start-ups that will create the high-wage, high-tech jobs of tomorrow." - End our dependence on oil from the Middle Eastern oil in 10 years - "I will tap our natural gas reserves, invest in clean coal technology, and find ways to safely harness nuclear power." - "invest $150 billion over the next decade in affordable, renewable sources of energy -- wind power, and solar power (OTCBB:SOPW) , and the next generation of biofuels -- an investment that will lead to new industries and 5 million new jobs that pay well and can't be outsourced." -"affordable, accessible health care for every single American."
And that's only in his acceptance speech, which typically don't even go into great detail about policy plans.
5. As for what Obama has done, he has consistently reached across party lines to pass legislation:
-He worked with Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., after Hurricane Katrina to improve oversight of federal spending. (Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act)
-He worked with Republican Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar on a number of occasions... they co-sponsored legislation to update the Nunn-Lugar program--studied the dangers of nuclear proliferation and passed legislation meant to keep nuclear material from falling into the hands of terrorists. (Lugar-Obama Act) They also worked together on the American Fuels Act of 2006 (a bill that would drive investment in biomass ethanol), and also co-sponsored a bill to raise automobile fuel-efficiency standards in July 2006.
-He even worked with then-Arizona Sen. John McCain in sponsoring legislation that called for sharp, mandatory cuts in greenhouse gas emissions. This was clearly before McCain decided to sell his soul to Rove for a shot at the "prize," as he calls it: In his own words, why McCain wants to be president

1. There's nothing empowering about being forced to work by the state. In fact, that is one of the most disempowering things I can think of. Examples of actual attempts at empowerment might include job training or education. You know, commie ideas like that . . .
2. Obama will win in New York. Our opinions, and those of tens of millions of other citizens, are essentially rendered meaningless by our electoral system.

Paul - You remind me of your fellow Californian RonR.
1. No, I won't decide the waste storage location in a BR comment. McCain supports the Nevada concept. If some alternative is better, so be it. Just because it's dragged on for years doesn't mean it can never be solved. Yes we can! Look again at how many other nations continue to build nuclear plants, including such socially and environmentally conscious nations as Canada and Finland. If Canada and Finland can deal with the storage problem, there's no reason the U.S. can't. Yes we can!
2. I thought we agreed about lifting the ban, yet you're still arguing. Yes, onshore and offshore drilling are long term issues and not a silver bullets. So what? That doesn't make it meaningless. You say offshore won't happen unless oil exceeds $150. Some Buff State professor posted a graph on BR a few months ago which predicted $500/barrel which seems insane in the time frame of his graph but who knows. It might go back to $150 or more within a few years.
I won't try to guess why McCain voted for those things you asked me about. I never said he's perfect, just that he's better than his opponent.
Yes other things should be done too including conservation, solar, hydrogen cars, etc., none of which are silver bullets either. Enough with phony false choices.
Who knows what reserves might still be discovered if restrictions are removed? Consider the huge discoveries Brazil recently found offshore. Refusing to use American resources, off or onshore, while begging OPEC to increase their production doesn't make sense.

3. RonR, I mean Paul, you write 'I didn't say tax cuts are meaningless'. You wrote at 16:50 - 'Talking about who has an office where, who looks like a stripper, who's not a Muslim, tax cuts, drill-drill-drill mantras, and nuclear silver bullets are meaningless considering the realities of the economy and pending technologies.'
See those two short words you wrote after Muslim and before drill? One starts with t and one with c. Now look for that longer word starting with m and ending with less. Just before it is the word are. Don't go all Clinton on us and say it depends on what the meaning of are is. Seriously, it's ok to just say you wrote it but didn't mean to, or didn't recall. It's ok, we all say or type things accidentally sometimes. Doesn't make you a bad person. But to keep denying it is silly. It's just a blog.

AtwaterLouse,
1. How specific can I be? I said TALKING about tax cuts is meaningless because neither Obama or McCain will provide wholesale tax cuts in spite of their rhetoric. With a trillion-dollar deficit, tax cuts are not the way out toward fiscal responsibility. Both candidates may offer some targeted tax cut, but they will both be forced to raise a host of other taxes. The Concord Coalition, as one source, has reported on this deficit issue for years.
2. Regarding Yucca mountain, the site has been ready to accept nuclear waste for over a decade. A Republican president who has had a majority Republican congress couldn't get traction on the issue. How will McCain make this happen? What's his policy brief that can provide some clues? I don't exempt Obama from the issue, either. The problem is that neither candidate wants to talk about where to transport and store nuclear waste.
3. I stand by my offshore drilling comments. Open up drilling, but it won't take place unless oil is priced high enough to make it financially feasible. The Gulf is easy oil so it's financially feasible. Other areas are not. You mention onshore drilling, but I don't know of any issues regarding that because it seems to be occurring in many states now.
Regarding Brazil, yes, there are massive oil reserves that have been found. The problem is that the technology might not yet exist that can successfully retrieve the oil.
4. As far as me living in California, what's your point?
It really seems that you're just getting your talking points from the McCain campaign. If you think that

I don't know how any one in this area can vote for democrats. They have done such a great job ruining things here and in the state. I also can't believe this was a post. Actually I can believe it. While I see fault in both parties we need to mix more republicans in to have some checks and balances in this state.

Saying something isn't meaningless but is meaningless to talk about is an interesting distinction, way over my head to gasp that.
I favored more drilling before McCain did, so maybe he got his talking points from me. Certainly i didn't get them from him.
These are all long term issues. Storage has to be resolved by making more progress on the Nevada plan or something else. That's obvious. That's part of what McCain should be judged on if he wins. He's not president yet. There's no reason to say it's impossible just because something has dragged on for years. The fact remains one candidate is proposing a push to build new nuclear plants (among other things) and the other candidate is opposed.

Atwater, sorry for the cutoff on my last sentence. Discussing tax cuts or spending cuts without it being in the context of deficit-neutral spending is smoke and mirrors. Neither candidate has focused on the deficit in their public comments.
There is a belief that offshore drilling is going to have a relatively quick positive impact on our oil supply, but it won't. In addition, oil produced in the US goes on the world market and may not be for US consumption. Hey, big oil sells US gasoline to Mexico, so there's no reason to suggest that it has a financial interest in keeping oil here, too.
Regarding nuclear storage, the American voter should understand how any presidential candidate plans to make it happen successfully. I'm not going to assume that McCain or Obama are just going to make it happen. Also, for the record, Obama has never been opposed to nuclear energy.
Finally, I'm glad to discuss issues with you AtwaterLouse, but I'm not interested in a political tit-for-tat; so, thank you for the relatively peaceful discussion.

I'm a little puzzled why the federal deficit and debt is being made to sound so high: ' With a trillion-dollar deficit, tax cuts are not the way out toward fiscal responsibility.'
The federal deficit isn't a trillion dollars. In fiscal 2007, it was $163 billion. Probably with slower growth of revenues it will be worse in 2008, but nowhere near a trillion. As a percent of GDP it was on a good decline as of 2007 for four consecutive years.
http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/87xx/doc8792/11-2007-MBR.htm
From above: 'The federal government recorded a total budget deficit of $163 billion in fiscal year 2007, $85 billion less than the deficit incurred in 2006. As a share of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP), the 2007 deficit was 1.2 percent - down from the 1.9 percent recorded in 2006.'
As percent of GDP, the deficit got smaller each year from 2004 (3.6%) to 2007 (1.2%), also shown at link above.
In historical standards, neither the annual federal deficit nor the total cumulative federal debt are currently at historic highs as percent of GDP. Far from it. And again, raising tax rates doesn't necessarily increase revenue. Cutting tax rates doesn't necessarily reduce revenue. Googling around for a chart of total federal debt as percent of GDP shows the early 1960s, total federal debt was similar to today's as percent of GDP. A famous supply side tax cut happened back then, which helped grow federal tax revenues. So it's just not true to say the current size of the deficit or total federal debt means that tax cuts are impossible. Whether they're a good idea is a different matter, but they're possible and both candidates have them on the table in different forms, so it seems to me a meaningful issue. Maybe not a great BR issue until the Grace vs Gilbert matter is settled, but one issue for voters to consider. As Colin says NY state has probably already made up its collective mind but we can help affect popular vote bragging rights or outrage.

In between getting political quotes from the usual biased sources, try referring to the non-partisan factcheck.org http://factcheck.org/ People also seem to forget the biggest liberal and socialist of all time: Jesus. Check the Bible. It's all there.

"I don't know how any one in this area can vote for democrats."
Because they believe in evolution? Because they don't hate gay people? Because they think it's nuts to fight a war against a tactic?
There are plenty of reasons. They may not apply in your case, but they exist just the same.

Colin - There is nothing empowering about being on welfare; however there is something empowering about getting off your fat ass and getting a job.

People in this area love the Democrats because they do not believe that they can handle things on their own. They need the democrats to make sure that they have savings for retirement because they can't do it themselves. They need the democrats to create policies that put them to work because they don't believe that they can get a job based on their own worth or skills. They need the democrats to ensure that they get a pay raise every year because competition in the workplace is just uncivilized. They need the democrats to protect them from themselves. Can't you see why we have such blind allegiance to the democrats? Can't you also see how this has helped us secure our place as the 2nd poorest city in the nation. Keep voting democrat and pretty soon we can say "WE ARE NUMBER 1"

AtwaterLouse, the national debt is over 9 trillion dollars; the federal deficit, as of August 2008, is $483 billion. Your comments regarding historical standards and tax cuts are the classic supply side economic argument and yet the deficit and the debt continue to rise. VP Cheney is famous for saying that deficits don't matter, so we shouldn't be surprised. You're looking at the current economic situation
