Buffalo United Scooter Club

You may have noticed that there are a lot of scooters cruising around the city these days. With the price of gas hovering around four bucks, is it any wonder? On Thursday I spotted a cluster of scooters on the West Side - mostly vintage models... all in excellent condition. As I was checking them out, a few familiar voices shouted from a nearby second floor porch. They told me that they were hosting a gathering (barbecue) for the Buffalo United Scooter Club - a scooter club that is really for die-hard scooter riders. They told me that everything I needed to know about their group, I could find on their private Yahoo! page. So I checked it out and learned some of the basics. First off, in order to qualify as a vintage-minded rider, you must follow these basic requirements (take with a grain of salt... or not):
A) You must have at least a 70cc scooter capable of at least 50 mph to keep up. "Vintage minded" doesn't mean vintage only, we understand that not everyone can afford or work on their own bikes, but vintage bikes, or their derivatives, are what most of us ride, and talk about. Let's face it, plastic throwaways work as training bikes, but are really awful in our opinion.
B) Must attend a rally or 2 a year.
C) We are equal opportunity haters. Membership is based on attendance of group get-togethers and being voted in. If you can ride wheelies on a 60's model, there is no need for a group vote.
Yesterday I spoke with Percy of Buffalo 66 scooter shop. He told me that the scooter group was really all about having fun while partaking in the scooter sub culture. The members talk bikes, music and rides... and tend to congregate at the Essex Street Pub - every scooter group needs a clubhouse right?
Percy also told me that there are some less serious scooter groups in the area - one of them can be found by searching BNYAS in Yahoo! groups.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

This is wonderful.
The Buffalo United Scooter Club, if they don't already, should go out on regular mass scooter rides up Elmwood and other prominent streets to promote green transportation and, of course, the coolness of the Wasp...

Always good to see you out snapping up Buffalo culture at its' best Newell. How much do we owe you for this story? No matter what type of scooter or motorcycle or moped folks ride there is always more fun in numbers. Our goal is to meet once a week for a ride and dessert. And then a beverage at the Essex afterward. Come out see us ask questions and get on whatever two or three wheel modes of transport you can afford and feel comfortable on. Thanks again Newell, the check is in the mail
