http://archive.buffalorising.com/city/archives/upload/2006/08/perog-thumb.jpg Bet you didn't know that pierogis were as popular as they are. I certainly didn't until I received an email notifying me that tomorrow is a day in Buffalo dedicated to the pierogi. So I looked up pierogis online and discovered that people actually celebrate this Polish food. There's a pierogi super hero, and a pierogi car, a Mr. Pierogi, and a pierogi with a religious face appearing on it. That's just the beginning n there are pierogi festivals and competitions and cookbooks. Did you know that Buffalo might soon be home of the pierogi? Yes, Buffalo may soon be known as "The Capital of the Pierogy Pocket of America". What an unusual name. Check it out... below is the official invitation.

Mayor Byron W. Brown cordially invites you to Niagara Square on Friday, August 25 for a special event celebrating "Buffalo's Pierogi Power!" Between 11 AM and 2 PM, purveyors of pierogi will be on hand to sell the delicious dumplings to the public. Also on hand will be celebrity judges, music and media contests. "Kenny Krew, one of the famous Krew Brothers, along with His Excellent Choice Polka Band" will add the festive occasion (dancing is welcome!). The celebration is part of an effort to name Buffalo "The Capital of the Pierogy Pocket of America" with a promotional blitz sponsored by national food brand "Mrs. T's."

The pierogi is a traditional Polish dish that places either potato, cheese, sauerkraut or other creative filling inside a tasty soft dough wrap. Pierogi are served with choice of sour cream, onions or other toppings to please one's palate.

And at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, the Pirates do a "Pierogi Race" during the 6th inning break... four mascots dressed as different flavors of pierogies run the warning track to the cheers of the crowd. Cool, eh?
