Buffalo State's Take Back The Night Rally And March

Story Options

Tomorrow at Buffalo State College is the Take Back The Night rally, an annual event that aims to raise awareness about and promote prevention of sexual assault. Tammy Kresge, who works in the Health Promotions Center at Buffalo State, helps coordinate this event between the different student organizations and the director of the counseling center, Dr. Joan McCool.

The event draws around 300 people, and according to Kresge, “the least amount of people we’ve ever had is 200-250.” Student organizations, including Greek and athletic organizations, pledge their support. Even with a large number of students from those organizations attending the event, 115 other students have confirmed their attendance on the Take Back The Night’s Facebook page.

The rally begins at 6:30pm in the Student Union Social Hall at Buffalo State. Speakers will begin to talk at around 7pm. The program features poetry readings, interpretive dance, and 20 presidents and vice-presidents from various organizations reading statistics and pledging their support. Also, “we have two survivors of sexual assault who will tell their stories,” says Kresge.

The keynote speaker of this year’s rally is the same as last year’s, Stephen Thompson. Thompson will spend the whole day training the faculty and staff of the college on sexual assault before he gives his talk at the rally. Thompson has devoted his life to studying the whys and hows of sexual aggression and has invaluable knowledge from countless interviews with convicted rapists as well as thousands of survivors of sexual assault.

The picture with this post features talks made at last year’s Take Back The Night. After the talks end, the march through the campus will begin. “It makes me feel good just seeing all the students come out for this event,” says Kresge.

There are three things that are inseparable in Buffalo State trying to improve security.

    1) Dont make it gender specific. Has anyone seen women today? This is not 1960 when girls were vulnerable, feminine, pure etc. Today women are murdering their kids in abortions, engaging in casual sex that outcompete prostitutes, vulgar mouths & attitude that would make turn of the century sailors blush, etc. Security should focus less on demonizing men as the perpetrators of all crimes and promote both safe and responsible behavior for both sexes equally.

    2) The second would be to make Buffalo State grow across Grant, to Niagara and Tonawanda and Amherst then take Buffalo State Security and have then driving down and patroling an expanded campus footprint.

    3) Expanding the campus and the patrols of campus security will make the surrounding neighborhood more livable for students and businesses which will inturn make the core campus safer.

    1. Sexual assault tends to be gender-specific. And yes, we've all seen the "very special episode" of SVU where that guy was raped by a knife-wielding woman, but in the real worl rape is a one way street.

    2. Chris69/Timmy is a disturbed misogynist. Re-read his point #1 for hints at his insanity. Women don't need protection from a crime which specifically targets them because they swear and have sex?

    3. Chris69/Timmy thinks rape is funny. See his performance on this thread from speakupwny.com for confirmation -- http://www.speakupwny.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15161. His is the 4th post down, and he contnues from there.

Chris69 you are insane if you think that women today do not need specific protection from rape because they swear or are sexually active or have abortions. Last I checked women had sex in the past...and oh yes abortions...were just as prevelant in the past as they are today. The difference is that it was kept a secret because it was illegal. Your point of view is typical of OLD conservatives who think that what is wrong with the world today is that women do not stay home cooking and cleaining like they did in the "good ol' days" of the 1950's. Oh wait..the good ol' 1050's?...is that when "colored" people were segregated, women did not have equal rights as men, homosexuality was a crime. I would never want those days back. Except for the one thing, that back then corporations paid 2/3 of taxes vs. 1/3 of taxes as is the case today...that was much better back then ;)

"Poetry readings" and "interpretive dance"? Sounds pretty slutty to me. I wouldn't want to walk home alone after one of these disreputable "Take Back The Nights".
