Tour de State

A couple weeks ago I posted on a number of University Students taking a two-hour tour of the West Side - something that rarely happened in years past. Now, Buffalo State College is co-sponsoring a similar tour in which faculty and professors are being given the chance to experience similar neighborhood acclimation. The intention is to show the people who work at Buff State the efforts that are being made to make west of Richmond a better place to live (and hopefully invest). I spoke to Harvey Garrett who, along with Gary Welborn and the West Side Community Collaborative, was instrumental in organizing the tour:
"The idea of this tour is different from the student tour. We want the faculty to become aware of the West Side progress taking place and the homeowners who are investing on the west side of Richmond. We're doing a similar program at D'Youville. This is a collaborative effort with Buff State and we're hoping to set up regular tours to interest college staff to become homeowners. We're showing them progress at this point - the transformation of the near West Side... Essex, Chenango, Urban Roots, etc. We're also putting together case studies that we can show the professors - the studies will be of people who are already living on and investing in the college neighborhoods.”
*The tour will take place on Tuesday, September 23, beginning at 4:30 p.m. R.S.V.P. by calling the Partnership Office at ext. 4132 or e-mail partner@buffalostate.edu. Details of the tour meeting location will be provided when you R.S.V.P.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

FINALLY!
FINALLY NOT JUST TWO RATHER FEABLE ATTEMPTS AT PARTNERING WITH D'YOUVILLE (1ST) AND TOURING THE WESTSIDE (2ND).
Its progress from someone such as Howard who has a long history of inaction and ignorance.
You see a bold move would have been things like: -buying land to move the sports stadiums off campus -buying land to move the non-academic offices off campus -buying land to move the bookstore and bursors office off campus -buying land for say a small business incubator facility particularly since what is it BERC has their international small business on Grant too! -shall I mention dormatories or is that a sore point for incompetence since so little has been done that private developers are doing it for Howard.
and let me say that if offices were built to the sidewalk such as a retail store along Grant Street, then it would change the entire dynamic of Grant, Amherst, Tonawanda!
Another thing that could be done is to expand the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management into the Richardson with a Conference Center (which could serve D'Youville, Canisius and Medaille).
I will say this....the westside/blackrock area has been teetering for decades but the gang violence is getting worse. If Howard (the biggest player in the area) doesnt embrace bold moves surrounding her campus then her campus is going to be increasingly unsafe (on campus and off, including parking lots and nearby housing). This minority/gender appointment president of Buffalo State should understand above everyone else what happens when an institution does not invest in the surrounding neighborhood and does not embrace growth. The decent of minority communities on the eastside from lack of investment and lack of jobs is blatantly obvious even for Howard.....yet she continues similar politices that are more image than substance just like Howard herself is more image than substance.
MESSAGE TO HOWARD: WE EXPECT MORE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF A LOCAL INSTITUTION THAN TOURS OF THE COMMUNITY, TURNING DOWN 10,000 APPLICANTS PER YEAR AND SLUFFING OFF DORMATORIES AND OTHER PROJECTS TO PRIVATE DEVELOPERS.

weiner...your act is old. Either you are bashing the Buffalo State president, whining about rewatering a basin, dreaming of moving the convention center next to said rewatered basin or complaining that the street grid or lack there of is Buffalo's downfall.
This normally wouldn't be to bad, but somehow you manage to insert your agenda in, no matter the topic is about.
Give it a rest.

For the sake of Buffalo....those with power must be held account. If its old for you KenS there is not force upon the earth requiring you to read.

Great! This is definitely progress. What about a tour like this around the UB South Campus neighborhood to try to generate interest in living/investing around there?

The West Side Community Collaborative put this together. Someone from the University Heights neighborhood would probably need to do something similar.

We have had students from Buff State and UB involved in our effort to establish a historic district in the area near Amherst and East St.. I believe many of these students have come away with a different perspective and a more positive view of the city.

I am currently a UB student and bought my house on Ripley about a year and a half ago. I love the idea of showing off the progress being made! For those of you who don't know, Ripley is a one way, one block street just west of Richmond between Vermont and Connecticut.

I too am a college student who has bought my first house on the west side between york and Connecticut and enjoy showing off what the west side has to offer. It only takes a few to motivate many to clean up their act and make a difference in the neighborhood. This is a welcomed tour to show off what the west side has.
