Buffalo Scavenger Hunt

Apparently it had been a very long time since I had partaken in a scavenger hunt. I had forgotten how competitive, and grueling, they can be. The last time I had entered one was back in my college days when the required mode of transportation was a car â not a wise decision on the behalf of the organizers. Before that I donât think that I had ever experienced the thrill of a massive scavenger hunt.
Yesterday out team of four (Rocketship 7) spent six hours criss-crossing the Elmwood/Allentown districts looking for items. It was all part of the Buffalo Scavenger Hunt (sponsored by Artvoice) â a hunt that turned out to be wild and wacky in ways that we could never have foretold. Approximately 75 dressed up contestants left from the Cozumel patio at noon with packets in their hands that would guide them on a surreal tour of the area â David Lynch could not have provided a better itinerary. Some of the clues involved photographs while others required team members to retrieve samples in plastic bags. Upon first examining the list, we all looked at each other sideways and wondered what we had just gotten ourselves into.

These are just a few of the photo clues that we managed to capture in the allotted timeframe:
Spoons hanging from noses, pulling nail out of wood without the use of hands, licking an ashtray, getting a stranger to moon you, asking a security guard to arrest a team member, arm wrestle a stranger, sign your team name on a strangerâs âarseâ, find someone in all denim, trade pants with a stranger, take a photo of an analog clock at 1:11pm, cook an egg on a sidewalk, shine the shoes of a public official (thanks Brian Reilly), hang from a clothes hanger, get spanked by an elderly person, blow a smoke ring, wear your clothes backwards, get a reverse Mohawk, make a body chalk outline on the sidewalk, sit on the Ice Creamcycle (thanks James), do âThe Wormâ on Fahertyâs floor, and act like road-kill on a Virginia Street sidewalk.

There were like 250 clues to choose from and by the time the scavenger hunt was over, everyone in the city had heard about what was taking place. We had a guy walk up to us asking if we wanted to hug him because he was wearing all green. Unfortunately, that photo was a 50/50 chance â it turned out that we needed to group hug someone wearing all purple. In the end, we screwed up every 50/50 item. By the end of the hunt, people were either staying clear of us, or asking if they could help with any clues.

Unfortunately, we never came close to winning. Even with one of our teammates willing to get his head shaved, we totaled under 300 points. The winning team scored a crazy 750 points. I have no idea what they did to reach that score. There were some major points for doing some pretty ridiculous things. My guess is that they went to the Church of Scientology to get stress tests, got real tattoos at Madd Graffix, cleaned a public toilet, shaved their heads, washed dishes at a restaurant for an hour â I canât imagine that anyone withdrew their US citizenship or joined the army (was that one?)

Are we going to enter again next year? Most likely. I donât think that weâll ever stand a snowballâs chance in hell of winning â there are certain things that are fun and then there are some things that are just not worth winning a mountain bike. The photos that I have from the hunt are priceless⌠and my team bonded in ways that I canât even describe. Thanks to Charlie Riley and Artvoice for putting together an extremely cool event. Itâs one that I will be thinking about for a long, long time.

Having a tough time deciding on how to spend your weekend? The Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society (BECHS) wonât make your decision making process any easier as theyâre offering two great events this coming Saturday and Sunday. December 6th marks their third annual Native American Festival and on December 7th, BECHS will host a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day that is free to veterans of the armed service. Both days are filled with fun activities and interesting visitors th …
Itâs really a shame if you missed the reading series âPoetry at the Tea Houseâ that took place at Tru-Teas! during this past year. Luckily, Trudy Stern didnât want anyone to miss out and teamed up with Michael Morgulis to produce an incredibly fine, unbound book entitled âTea Leavesâ to commemorate the readings and spread the work of the local poets who partook in the program.
In honor of the publication of this special edition portfolio, Morgulis and Stern are hostin …
I think that I would like to start off this post by commending the three Common Council members who were bold enough to ask for today's bizarre Waterfront Village decision to be tabled. David Franczyk, Mickey Kearns and Mike LoCurto all stuck to their guns when it came to holding off on making any hasty (and potentially tragic) decisions regarding our waterfront. Unfortunately, their headstrong stance was outweighed by the rest of the BURA committee, and the rumors are flying as t …
A development team has been selected for a vacant commercial site in Waterfront Village. Finally. The Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency this morning named Specialty Restaurants Incorporation as preferred developer for the prime 1.4 acre parcel at 10-15 LaRiviere Drive. The owner of the adjacent Shanghai Redâs restaurant is proposing an uninspired, four-story, 100 room Wingate Inn.

This event was a LOT of fun, but I'm amazed that the unofficial-Mayor-of-Buffalo only managed a "dismal" 300 pts.? Our team (BuffaloME.com) had two suburbanites (by BRO standards) and we came in 4th ;}

BackinBuffalo, its good to know that you're so skilled at licking an ashtray and making a penis out of bubblegum! I mean, seriously why the negative attitude towards what an overwhelmingly positive experience for all involved. That says a lot about BuffaloMe.com

I didn't know that suburbanites knew how to draw chalk outlines. Somebody better call the Buffalo News with that late breaker. Maybe someday there will be a hunt where you actually have to know the lay of the land and not how to blow a smoke ring.

I am shocked to hear that boring and predictable suburbanites were participating in these madcap shenanigans! Someone should notify the Amherst Police and Satish Mohan, let them know that their constituents are on the loose in the City. The wacky suburbanites should be reprimanded and reminded that the city is a place reserved for a boring, white-washed, cookie cutter existence and transgressions like these will not be tolerated. All artists and creative types should join the struggle and live in a converted loft on the near east side like the rest of the suffering bohemians!

Kudos to Charlie for the massive organizing effort -- what a blast! My teammates and I were old enough to be parents of most of the contestants, and still had a perfectly wonderful time... Let it be known that a scavenger hunt WILL be part of Buffalo Homecoming 2009 (June 25-28, 2009). The focus will be on Buffalo rather than the bizarre, but it will be just as much fun, albeit geared to a "broader demographic." We need Charlie to organize it! Sheer genius...

I just want to thank everyone who participated (Newell, we actually Sold Out with 35 teams totaling 140 participants) and all of the amazing vendors, bartenders, citizens and whoever helped the teams out along the way, we heard nothing but positive stories about strangers getting caught up in helping take pictures, giving clues and wanting to get in on the fun. It was a perfect day, great weather, new and old friends who all had an amazing time getting to know each other and the city. Thank you to our sponsors (ArtVoice, Labatt, Comfort Cafe and others) to make this an amazing event, and I cannot forget to thank Deb Ellis, Blake Walker, and especially the lovely Kristin Jordan who performed all of the magic behind the scenes. The best part is that we made a donation to Camp Goods Days, and plan to grow that each year. For those interested, check out www.buffaloscavengerhunt.com, as we will make this bigger and better next year. Thanks for the recap Newell, glad to see you had a great time.
Best, Charlie

WOWZERS! Yes that scavenger hunt was quite an event. Just for the record, I have a photo of myself motorboating the hot girl on Newell's team. (IT WAS FOR POINTS TOO!)
I had a small complaint- Charlie said that he wanted to make this a 'green' event, so we couldn't use cars- but we also couldn't use bikes or rollerskates and other such things. To make it not green- we were encouraged to use cabs?! (Charlie- how many Prius cabs are there in Buffalo?)
But all in all, this was a crazy-fun and tiring event. I hear there will be a 'Hunt for the Cure' for Roswell in the Fall.

Buffaloed, thank you for the feedback, I would appreciate if you can send pictures from your team efforts to me, I want to add some of these to the webpage and have a collection of all of the contestants.
In regards to the "green" thing, I see your point, but requiring teams to be on foot was the greenest possible application, us promoting not only cabs but public transportation added to that, which I know several teams took advantage of. I would have no problem if people were on bikes and rollerblades, except for the insurance necessary for something of that extent. I heard people liked the idea of walking cause it allowed them to interact with everyone else walking around.
Thanks Christa, you rock too!!!

A scoring error costs the true winners. The Scavenger Hunt was a lot of fun but results were not scored accurately and prizes were improperly awarded. After winners were announced, members of team âAlmostâ asked Scavenger Hunt organizers Charlie Riley and Kristin Jordan for clarification on scoring. Upon review it immediately became apparent that there had been an oversight in the scoring and the judges had not counted a very large 200-point item for team Almost (completion of a stress test at the Church of Scientology). The reason is that we were one of the first teams to check-in around 6PM and at that time it was not clear if the documentation from the Church that a stress test had been completed would be acceptable. Soon after it became clear that this documentation was adequate and other teams rightly received 200 points for this. With the scoring error, we had finished with 558 points while the team that was declared the winner had 715 points. Had our 200-point item not been omitted, we would have correctly been tallied to have 758 points. In private Charlie Riley and Kristin Jordan apologized profusely to our team, but downplayed the error saying that it was made by a volunteer for a charity event and that prizes had already been awarded. Our position was that if we earned the most points then we should receive the top prize and recognition that we had won. Charlie and Kristin told us that they would not take prizes away from those to whom they had already been awarded. We acknowledge that that may be difficult but that is what happens in an election if a recount yields a new winner. How would this be handled in the Olympics? We suggested that if Charlie did not want to take the top prize away from the team to which it had already been awarded, he would have to come up with another set of top prizes (4 mountain bikes). In acknowledgement of the error, Charlie offered to give us free entry to the scavenger hunt the next time it takes place. Eventually, he gave us our entry money back. He and Kristin told us that we would be considered and listed as the winners but we would not receive the top prize. We were made to feel that our concerns were petty and that we were imposing regarding some minor err of a volunteer in a charity event. Three days after the event, an email was sent out to team captains by Charlie and Kristin, but with no mention whatsoever of the critical scoring error and any official change to the rankings. Charlie and Kristin seem to be very good people who find themselves in a difficult situation. However, as Charlie and Kristin acknowledged in private that team Almost is considered the winners and in the interest of the integrity of the competition, we think we deserve more appropriate recognition and more than just a refund. Yes, this is a charity event and it is important that events such as this, presently and in the future, transpire in a fair manner.

BuffaloME.com had a great time! We met a lot of great people and came out of our shells - so many things on the list that we would not normally do in public! Unfortunately I missed the post-party and scoring because immediately after check-in at 6 I had to head over to the Town Ballroom for the Feed the City benefit concert with Bruce Hornsby, so I have no idea who placed and what the prizes were. Major props to everyone who participated and all of the innocent bystanders who were asked to help us out with outlandish tasks. We can't wait to do the next one. Thank you Charlie!

Hey Folks- the rumor about a hunt in the fall to benefit Roswell is true: Hunt for the Cure will be held on October 11, 2008 and you can find out more and sign up at www.hunt4thecure.com. Hunt for the Cure is a different kind of scavenger huntt but the same kind of fun- fewer clues (just 12-15), more trivia, skills challenges, and food stops along the way. The first team reach the final checkpoint at Fat Bob's Barbecue with pictures to show they went to each site and completed the challenges wins. Hope to see you there!
