It's not often that a man who looks at weather for a living is so stoked about his good weather news that he calls media outlets, but that's exactly what happened here at BR. Stephen McLaughlin of the National Weather Service called our offices to alert us to an article the New York Times published on August 26th, and to share the happy news.
"We at the NWS also feel we have been having the nicest summer in the USA...long (since May), warm (not too humid), sunny, and quite dry (a problem for a few, a blessing to most)...." McLaughlin said.
From the NYT article :
BUFFALO OASIS
The weather has been inhospitable in parts of the nation this summer. In July, the interior West sizzled under a spell of extreme heat, with Montana, Idaho and Wyoming recording their hottest Julys on record. This month, the stifling heat has shifted to the South and Ohio Valley. Memphis, Birmingham and Cincinnati have had more days with temperatures of 100 degrees and higher than any other August.
Torrential rain has poured on the Midwest and southern Plains this summer. Corpus Christi, Texas had its wettest July, while Madison, Wis. has had its wettest August and month on record. In contrast, it's been a blissful summer on the shores of Lake Erie in Buffalo. May and June brought record amounts of sunshine to the city, while the average high since May has been a pleasant 77 degrees. Rainfall in Buffalo since May has totaled seven inches, compared to 17 inches in Chicago and 23 inches in New York City.
Dig the title. McLaughlin said the NWS will come out with a report summarizing the summer season, which they calculate from June 1 to August 31. McLaughlin thought of Buffalo Rising first saying, "It's positive news, so that might be a hard sell! That's why I wanted to send it over to you folks first."
McLaughlin also said the NWS report would be ready after the holiday weekend, "…which looks appropriately beautiful." Have a great weekend, Buffalo.

This is not new. Buffalo summers have been heavenly pretty much forever. It's a shame people elsewhere only think of snow when they think of Buffalo. Summers here are always the best in the nation!

The stressed trees, brown grass and cracked soil seem to think we have a drought, not "beautiful" weather. We've had 1/3 normal rain in August. Hello, NWS ?

The media weather-bots should quit judging & just report facts: sunny, cloudy, rain, dry, hot, cold - not "NIce!" or "your weekend is ruined! Rain!" (and the TV bots always use their frowny faces, to emphasize how awful it is when an element essential to Life on this planet falls out of the sky. Dimwits.)

I'm just glad we don't have the same quantity of days filled with the oppressive humidity I associate with my early Buffalo experiences- when visited family here during the summer in the 70s. It seems to me that it becomes a bit more tolerable and enjoyable every year- or have I just gotten used to it?

Un-freakin-believeable... A nice post, about national weather recognition that doesn't contain the words snow, blizzard, lake-effect, armpit, or others and folks get all defensive? Whoa!!!!

As compared to the rest of the nation, this has been a phenominal summer - you can even ask folks who used to live in CA or FL - they'll agree, and then say how their move here was the best choice they could have made.

Try as I might I cant find a link. I'm waiting for word from McLaughlin to see if he has the original. Is it possible that the Times doesn't keep everything on the weather page online?

    I'll keep digging...

Okay, Buffalo, time for some good-natured meme warfare. Every time someone says "Terrible winters!," counter with "Spectacular summers!" If you talk about Buffalo to out-of-towners, open with how great the weather is. Stop apologizing for the fact that winter exists in this hemisphere. Does Florida beat itself up about hurricanes? Does San Francisco mumble in shame about earthquakes?

P.S. Grass goes brown every summer as a normal, dormant stage during dry conditions. Don't worry, it'll bounce back. I never water my lawn and it never dies.

Does anyone else absolutely love our winters in Buffalo? I had the displeasure of living in Pittsburgh during winter, and experiencing what most other northeastern cities experience; a freezing cold, drab, useless, depressing winter of playing video games. Why? There's no freaking snow!!! What sane person would put up with these temps without snow? Snow brightens the landscape day and night, it most importantly makes turf for many many fun sports, and, for those timid drivers, our basass snowplow crews usually have the main roads clear in no time. Am I nuts that I anxiously await some lake-effect?
