Buffalo Needs A Fun Map

While out in Montana a couple weeks ago I ran across the tourist map that you see here. We were checking out a college town while there, and discovered that the map was used as a major navigation tool for both the University of Montana and the city of Missoula. The map could be found in every university building as well as in many restaurants and shops. It appeared to be a continuous resource for visitors to the city - many of whom were university students unfamiliar with Missoula.
I've often wondered if having such a map for Buffalo would be wise. I can only imagine that the galleries and museums would find the navigation tool to be handy. And if one or two sponsors could pay for the production, then that would mean that the map could avoid becoming an ugly marketing gimmick for tacky businesses. As a matter of fact, I have talked to a couple people who say that they would be interested in producing the map if there were a couple of sponsors that would be interested in funding the project.
If the map does get produced, I am sure that the colleges would be the first delivery points... then the tourist destinations and so forth. If there is a business out there that is looking for a way to get their name out in the community, please send me an email and we can discuss the opportunity.

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

This is a great idea and should be done. There are so many hidden places to go, things to do and see in Buffalo and surrounding areas that many people living in the city don´t even know about much less those in the surrounding cities. Someone has a golden business opportunity here that will be a great service to Buffalo.

Don't we have a convention and visitors bureau to take care of this type of thing?

I believe Buffalo did have such a map, perhaps 30 years ago. I used to visit Buffalo for a month every summer and I recall that my girls loved to color the maps. Bring them back. A perfect item for the Elmwood Village stores and elsewhere.

That would be a great idea but I think Buffalo's map would be quite crowded. Perhaps separate it into a couple maps. One for eateries alone would be pretty crowded. A historical one? Museums and art galleries? Architectural gems? Cater to the visitors that we know come here first then branch out.
But most of the ones I’ve seen were printed by and paid for by local businesses that advertise along the outer border of the map. I don’t see city hall or the tourism “board” getting involved in something so “innovative.”

In the tourist town I currently reside, these types of maps are available everywhere: hotels, restaurants, stores, and attractions. Gas stations and convenience stores have enlarged laminated versions in their windows. Very effective!

Unfortunately, this type of map would be more helpful to tourists in Buffalo these days.

Niagara on the Lake has a map like this showing the whole area, where the wineries are, some stores, etc. The road lengths are not to scale but it says it right on the map. At least you get an overview of the area, might I add it's a pretty big area represented on it. Who says our Buffalo version has to be exact. It could include downtown, Allentown, Elmwood, Delaware, Main and maybe stretch up to Hertel. I know I'm being totally elitist but quite honestly, the East side is crap as well as most of University Heights and I'd never send anyone who isn't from the area already into those parts.
