Buffalo Gets Dog-Friendly… and music may be coming soon.

Dog-lovers will be happy to know that Buffalo’s first Off Leash Area (Dog Park) went off without a hitch today. We took a drive over to see what the turnout was like, and on the way we spotted a bicyclist (on Porter) heading (we assume) to LaSalle Park. If you look at the photo closely, you may notice her four-legged friend sticking his/her furry white head out of the doggie-backpack. That was just the first sign that people were en-route to the park. Upon arrival we noticed that there were about 25 dogs romping around the enclosed field, which was a good number considering it was a hot Saturday morning.
The news crews were on-hand to shine a light on the development, and Erie County Legislature Maria Whyte, Jay “Micropark” McCarthy, and Assemblyman Sam Hoyt. As of noon there was still a good crowd on hand with more people arriving. I asked Micropark what was next for him now that that the dog-park was on track. “I’m in discussions to create a concert series in LaSalle Park. The LaSalle Park Pavilion is the perfect place for a concert. It’s only just begun… the takeover is imminent. We want people to meet down here at the park on Saturday mornings… and next year they will hopefully be able to stick around and listen to live music. Plus, we have not forgotten about the urban skate park. That’s a priority too. We are not just talking, we’re doing.”
Micropark will most likely set his sights on attracting such music acts as: Snoop Dog, Lil' Bow Wow, and Stereo Lab... Photo: Amelia Schineller

As we mentioned in our previous post, we’re in the process of changing the Buffalo Rising site. We’re almost there as we expect to launch the new site on Friday, December 19th.
In the meantime, posting will be light as we log new stories in the new publishing system which will only be viewable when we launch on Friday.
As always, we appreciate our users’ patience as we make this transition but we promise it will be well worth it. With faster load times, a comment view …
Caroline Kennedy was in town for a visit with our mayor yesterday. A possible choice to succeed US Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Kennedy's name has been mentioned along with that of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo (son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) and our own Byron Brown, among others.
Certainly, Kennedy has "been around politics" all of her life, which is to say she was born into a family of politicos and lived in the White House--neither of which would necessarily f …
Free light rail rides on downtown's above ground section could be derailed thanks to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority's budget mess. That is the news coming out of a Buffalo Place meeting this morning. Facing a budget shortfall and reduced State operating assistance, the NFTA is scrambling for new revenue sources and is contemplating charging for rides along the lengthy downtown pedestrian mall.
Well it is Christmas time in the city and the NFTA helped put people and especially children into the mood in a very festive and fun way. One of my favorite memories of childhood was taking the train downtown with my grandfather. I would gaze out the windows and watch the tunnel speed by. It always felt like we were going a million miles an hour.
Then there was the ability to stand up and walk around during the ride without the need to be strapped down. It was always a fun time …

Nor is there even a shred of evidence that the majority of voters in his district want lower taxes. They like govt pork spending, govt "services", govt subsidies of the arts and housing for artists, punishment of corporations, and redistribution of wealth.
Sam represents that majority philosophy very well and it quite open about it.
If any candidate ever runs for that seat on a platform of pushing for smaller govt, less spending, and lower taxes, he or she will be clobbered at election time by a huge majority of voters in that district.

Gee, seems that the conversation turned from the dog park pretty quickly..... Thank you SAM HOYT , JAY McCARTHY and MARIA WHYTE for finally getting the dog park off of the ground! Just came back (Sunday afternoon), and there were plenty of panting dogs and plenty of happy owners.
